CITY AND DISTRICT. met aac STREETS OF WASHINGTON. ‘Protest Agninet Property-Owners Nam- ing Streets for Themselves aud Sug- gestions for Another System. ‘To the Editor of Tae Evexixe Sram: 1 observed the other day in yout valuable paper that & new street was to be laid out by a land- owner which Is to bear his own name. After he has thus abandoned ft to the city, (which is to be presumed 1s done to benefit his own property, aud tucifentally perpetuate his mame) 1t will be- come a public charge, to be paved, policéd, drained and lighted as long as the city stands, at the cost ‘all the citizens, as to one-half, and of all the people of the United States as tothe other half. Should not a stop be put to this system of tmprint- tag the names of Living people upon the public thoroughfares of the capitol of the nation, simply Tecause they happen to own a lot which they de- sire tocut in half for thetr own advantage, don’t fatimate that any of the present names thus im- posed may ever hereafter possess nnpleasant slg- hifleances, but it Is at least a subject of congratu- lations that Guiteau never purchased a square of ground and laid out a street through It Dearing his ‘Own name. A recent cast In one of our courts dis- closed one of the inconveniences of the present prac- ee, From 14th to 17th streets, between @and P, there exists ap open way, Which as far as 15th streetis siinply known as an“alley,"and is Nitty feet wide; between 1oth and 16th itis known as Sam- son Street, and is forty feet wide; and from 16th Ww 17th It is called Madison street, and ts forty-five feet in width, The next proprietor Who sees Nit to ‘open this Way still farther may aMx a new set Of names abd establish still different widths, to be kept in order by the pubic that is to have no shafe in the christening of their future property. ‘To call a street in such a city after an individual Js to coater high foria of compliment upon bis name, as imperishable a3 any monument could be. Congress should assume its proper authority and Ut a stop at once to this abuse. While on this subject allow me to suggest what J think Would bea great improvement upon the very convenient and ive nomenclature of strevts adopted by the founders of the city. Convenient as it isin many respects, there 13 4 serious Inconvenience constantly presenting itself 1a consequence of the similarity of sound of many if the lettered streets, Which must have Deen ob- served DY those who Use the telephone or who are en present in the courts of Justice or in almost ¥ public place. ‘The letters B, C, D, E. G, P, T, and V are so similar in sound that its extremely diifticult to understand which of the strects bear- ing those names 1s intended by the speakers, and this Involves constant delays and mistakes, "The same is true of M and N and H and sth. This could be avoided by substituting tor Lhe letters the names of some of our great men who have passed away comme with the same letter, ’nis Would require the use of tWo such names be- siaming With the same letter, one to be applied to the street north and the otler to its nar south. The names of the Presidents shoul be Used, Lhen of the Vice- Presidents, chief justices, cabinet officers, Senators, and other high function- ieS Of the past: und Where hese do not supply the entire deinand the names of the mayors of the city vod of its founders may be used, I suggest these names for consideration : Adams and Arthur, Buchanan and Breckinridge, Cleveland and Clinton, Dallas and Decatur, Klis- esake worth and Everett, Ftlimore and Franklin, Grant | and Garfield, Harrison and Hayes, izard and Ire- dev, King and Knott, Lincoln and Livingston, Madison and Mouroe,” Otis and Ogle, Polx and Pierce, Quincy and Quitman, Kush and Randolph, Sherman aod Southard, Taylor and Tyler, Upshur and Union or Underwood, Van Buren and Van Ness, Washington and Wilson. It Would have been dificult ‘to find forty-eight appropriate names in 1800. It seems to me we have progressed beyond the A, B, C stage, and tuay, properly dispense with Uie’ austere and yet etuidish nomenciature, which was a necessity when It Was adopted, and substitute such an one as is here suggested (and for which suggestion I Claim no novelty). This, while preserving with ‘the pew names ali the advantages of tne present suggestive system, will cure the defects I Lave in- dicated and greatly lumprove the euphony.
