Berth, a hal!-witied fellow, created a diversion by throwing off his coat and’ turnin, Somersaults and handsprings. After the bear an Hiram had amused the people for some time the itallans moved off, carrying Hiram’s coat, which contained a small amount of money. Hiram se- cured @ Warrant, and he and Constable Kester pursued the Italians, The Itallans promptly re- Moved bruin’s muzzle, and he stood up ready for Nght. Hiram, seetog the lost coat, rushed toward the fucttives to secure it. Constable Kester in the meantime had attacked the bear and, placing his revolver at the enraged animal's €ar, snot him dead, but he was too late to save Berth. Before the constable could regain his feet the Itallans wrenched his revoiver from bis grasp and fired two shots at the officer from his own weapon as they ran away.
