Citizens’ assoctation No. 7 (West Washington) Fesolved last eventng to withdraw from all connec- ‘Uon with the citizens’ representative committee. Thetr action as well as their reasons are embodied in the following resolutions, which were adopted ‘unanimously: Whereas the citizens’ committee of West Wash- ington was organized for the purpose of promoting the general interests of this section, through the Tegularty instituted and appointed authorities of ‘the District; and = Whereas our connection with the Committee One Hundred seems rather to defeat than aid this object: Therefore, Resolved, That we discontinue our connection with the Committee of One Hunared, and that a Copy Of this resolution be sent to the secretary of {he Committee of One Hundred for the informer ‘This Fesolution was Introduced at & previous Meeting by ‘secretary, Mr. Archibald Greenlees, and referred toa commultved. When the associa- Uion met last evening, the el Mr. John T. Mitchell, submitted a from this committee recommending the of the resolution. Frederick L. Moore moved that the report be adopted. OF POSED TO A CHANGE OF THE DISTRICT GOVERNMENT. M. A. MeGowan said that sowething should be added to the resolution to show the public that the members of the association were opposed to any change in the present form of the District government. In expianation of the resolution, Mr, John T. Mitcheil said that he attended the ineetings pre- limigury to the organization of the Committee of Ove Hundred. He said that he heard the objects 6f the proposed organization discussed, and if there was any. one thing that was agreed upon it Was that there should be no attempt made to bring about a change in the District goverament. On the contrary, the avowed object Was to te with and aid the District authorities n_carry- ing out objects of District interest, | es- pecially Im regard to steam and street railroads, | code of law=, &c. ‘The matters of purely local | Jnterest in the various sections were not to be | brougat berore the general committee, but It was expected that each district Would take charge of their own affairs, When the plan of organization was about to be adopted, continued Mr. Mitchell it appeared that some of the gentlemen wanted UW enlarge the scope of 1t and proj that mat- ters of purely sectional interest should be brought | in. He opposed this proposition. It wasnot long, he sald, alter the organization of the committee Was effected when it becaie apparent that a large number of gentlemen had SORES ON TOF OF THRIR HEADS, placed there by removal from office in some in- stances, by disappointed ambition in getting office in other instances, and by private grievances. ‘These latter, he said, bad been brought up in the meetings of ‘the Cominittee of One Hundred. To a large extent, he thought, this has been the cause of the disagreements that have arisep in the committee. “Then the scheme of the change im the District government was proposed, be- cause these gentlemen saw more chance to get an office for each When fifteen Would be appointed than when there were three. Mr. Mitchell, how- ever, added that he thought the committee had done some good work, and he instanced the School report, the Water report, and the rallroad report, as showing considerable research on the part of the committees, and as worthy of cousideration. So far as the interests of Georgetown “were concerned, he thought Uhat the people had not been benefited by their cophection with the central committee, In the opinion of Mr, MeGowan the mere fact that this change in the form of the District gov- ernment had been proposed by the committee and that they were getting mnto a confused mess was a suMlclent cause for the association to withdraw from the committee, He thought that when cer- tain members of the central committee found that they could not work the Commissioners then they ‘went in for a change in the government, He sald that the citizeas had done well under the present form of government and be thought that it was BETTER TO LEAVE WELL-ENOUGH ALONE. When the government of this city 4s compared with that of any in this country the superiority of it ts readily perceived and tt 1s not difMult tosee that citizens here are better off than in any other city in this country. It appeared to him that the Committee of One Hundred wanted togside-track the Cominissioners and run the Distriet indepen. dent of the present authorities. He thought that it would be better for Unls association to with- draw. Dr. ‘Charles Becker said that it was seen plainly, {ery soon ater the representative commision was anized, that a great mat members were Soretieadm and there were also ‘a great Many WHO had nothing in view except THE GRINDING OF PRIVATE AXES. Tt seemed to him that this association had no place there, and for that reason ne resigned as a member of the representative committee. While he favored the withdrawal of the association, yet he hoped that it would continue and be made inore active, Instead of antagonizing the authorities they should work with them. AS for a change in the District government he would say that any one who had lived under the government of any of our iarge cities will acknowledge that this is the best governed city in the country. | Tue clamor for achange, in his opinion, comes from private in- terest. ‘The vote on the resolution was then taken, with the result as stated above. ‘An informal discussion followed in regard to the interests of West Washington. It was stated that oue new schoaj-building was provided for in the new appropriation bill, and that if the school au- thorities were consulted it would be located some- where on Gay street near Greene. SUBURBAN INTERESTS. ‘Mr. Ritehie thougat that an important matter for Georgetown interests was the extension of streets into the country. At present there were ouly three roads. N street should be extended to- Ward the conduit road and Vailey street toward Massachuset.s avenue extended. Mr. Moore thought that the¥ might try to the streets within the city limits paved first before going outside. ‘One of the members suggested that the arching of Kock Creek was a very Important matter, but it was stated that this was considered to be a settled matter. ‘The health of the people on both sides of Rock Creek deimanded it, and the delay could not be continued much longer. A PUBLIC MEBTING TO BE CALLED, It was decided to call a public meeting of the citizens for the purpose of electing a committee of twenty-one to constitute a citizens’ committee, In connection with this call the chairman and secre tary were empowered to draw up a statement of Whe reasons for the action taken at the present meeting.
