THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON ‘TUESDAY. . MOSBY Ss. NOYES. es voluntartly out of the race, and throwing their votes for other men. Lincoln stands ahead of Allison, Gen. Sheridan gets as many votes as nscor Conkling, and Judge Gresham no more than Gov. Foraker. ia Pennsylvania Blaine naturally ecitpses every- ene; Dut, waem he Is out of the way, Lincoln ieads Suerman by about forty per cent; Hawley comes next with less than half Sherman's vote, and Depew, Harrison, and Gresham follow, with each about half of Hawiey’s. In Ohio everybody 1s loyal to Sherman as the State's first candidate; for second choice Foraker ‘springs promptly to the front, with Lincoln a close second. Harrison and Hawley, the former with ‘twice the latter's vote, come next; while fifth on the list stands the name of Blaine, the Buckeye republicans having generally accepted the Flor- ence letter of declination as final Tn Indiana, which, like New York, ts political figuting ground, Harrison seems to be overwhelm- ingly the favorite, having 698 votes out of a total of 1,252, or a considerable majority over all. Sher- ‘man has somewhat more than half of what re- mains, and Gresham bas about half of Sherman's vote, while Blaine, doubtless for the same reason as ip Obio, comes in well down the list. in Minnesota Lincoln leads with 401 votes out of 962, and Gresham follows with °11, while Sher- aman and Allison have 171 and 103, respectively. Here, again, the Blaine letter is evidently accepted at [ts full face value, Its author getting scarcely more than 10 per cent of Lincoln's vote. It 1s ‘worth noting that the Conkling boomlet 1s not dead, as the ex-Senator ngures more or less con- ‘spicuously among the candidates favored on sec- ond choice; and Lucius Fairchild gets two votes . 1 five states, one tm Indiana and one in Minne- Sota, While General Tuttle ts still unheard from. ‘The strength of Depew in New York, in which a ‘s@rong candidate to unite all factions ts essential to republican success, and, om tue other hand, his: weakness In the West, are notable features of the Times statistics, —$<—— A decision by the Supreme Court in favor of the ‘Bell Telephone Company is natural'y pleasant news for the stockholders of that corporation; but suck a division of the court as occurred yesterday Js not wholly discouraging to the interests ranged on the other side, which manage to extract from the situation a few grains of comfort. Of the nine Justices constituting the court Justice Gray ab- tained, from considerations of propriety, from taking part in etther the hearing or the dectsion; ‘Justice Lamar withheld his judgment because he Was not on the bench when the case was beard, the chief justice and three associates decided in favor of the Bell Company, and the remaining three justices dissented. It was, therefore, a close contest and a narrow victory, which might be re- versed in effect on a rehearing or on an argument of other appeals involving Kindred questions but supported by stronger evidence. ‘The Government case, which will probably be ‘set for an early hearing now that the other cases are out of the way, has been carefully worked up by able lawyers, some of whom profess to be will- ing to stake their professional reputations on the result, and are not dismayed by tue recent dect- sion, Such extreme confidence may be ill-founded, tor hope springs eternal in the legal breast; but theexpression of it suggests that there may be something more conclusive in the facts yet to be presented Co the Supreme Court than those of record ‘Jn the decided cases. At the hearing eight justices are expected to sit. Four of them are committed by yesterday's decision to the support of Prot. Bell's claim unless sume extra strong reasons are adduced for disallowing I. Three are committed to the other side unless the Government case is weaker than any heretofore brought before the court, Justice Lamar is acqualated with the merits of the Government case and ts accounted among ‘those wno, unless it has lost force in some mys ‘verious manner since he quitted the Cabinet, will ‘Vote to uphold it. If this 1s so, the court is prac- Ueally Ued at the outset. Everything then de- pends upon the ability of the Government to mak so excellent a presentation of its position as to win over one of the justices from yesterday's ma- jority. If that can be done, the field will be open tall the geniuses who have invent Telephones differing essentially that to ‘whose origin Professor Bell lays an undisputed cam, a ‘The cooks of America, tn solid array, armed with carving knives and skillets, demand thelr righta. ‘The canse of this perturbation and indignation 1s ‘be announcement that Mr. Vanderbilt proposes to import @ $10,000 “chef,” a fellow of infinite fancy, upon whom and in whose dishes are no files. The native cooks demand to know i the law against the importation of con- ‘wact labor, Which can shut out an Eng- ish clergyman under contract to perform services in New York, falls to apply to Vander- Dilt's “chef” of the lofty imagtuation, and they evince a disposition, if answered in the affirmative, to pronounce our boasted civilization a failure, ‘our system of protection against foreign competi. tion a snare and delusion, and our law against the importation of contract labor an injurious fraud. The American party should right This grievance atonce, The favor of the cook 1s proverbtally valuable, and bis or her influence is ‘Bot to be ignored. SO ———__— Mr. Walker Blaine’s letter tothe New York Tri. dune, reviewing the work of the late fisheries com- mission and attacking the treaty on the ground ‘that It concedes too much and secures too little, 1s noteworthy not alone for the matter ly contains, Dut for the source from which it emanates. A son of the most powerful man in public life in New Engiapd, and brought up amid the associations of ‘That region, whatever Mr. Blaine might have to say about the people and the industries of the northeast coast would secure a respectful hear- ing; and his settlement im the West, where there 45 little spontaneous sympathy with’ the interests of New England, gives him an attentive audience that could hardly be as well reached by any- ‘thing that Mr. Woodbury or Mr. Spofford might put forth in the same cause. _——— ‘The fact that members of Congress are tn ‘Themselves in the matter of burying the telegraph aud telephone wires of the city is an encouraging sign. Decisive action should be taken before the Tesching of the late lamented bilzzard is forgot- teu. om Philadelphia seems to be making her new license law prohibit to the extent, at east, of cutting down the existing trafic two-thirds and of cutting Oat from present applications for licenses one-half oe ——ee Srarxa Ovencoara, OUR STYLES THIS SEASON EMBRACE EVERY NOVELTY AND DESIRABLE STANDARD FASH- JON, THE CUT AND FIT OF OUR GARMENTS 18 A SURPRISE AND PLEASURE TO THE CUSTOMER, AND CAN BE APPRECIATED ONLY BY THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN FOR THEMSELVES THE ELEGANT AND SATISFACTORY GARMENT WE ARE ABLE TO GIVE EVERY PATRON.
