B. Noves, ‘Treas. Evening Star Newspaper Co. ‘Sworn to and subscribed before me this nine ‘Wenth day of March, A. D. 1588. Joux T. C. Cran, Notary Public. ————+ = Harper's Weckly, falling ito the prophetic ‘Yeln, disposes of the Independeat vote at the next presidential election. It divides the independents into three classes, contingent, of course, upon the Tenomination of President Cleveland by the demo- rats and the nomination of an ‘unobjectionable candidate” by the republicans, The frst class are ‘more ardent tariff than civil-service reformers, and ‘would support Mr. Cleveland on the strength of the stand he has lately taken on the question of \ax-reduction. The second class are those who consider civil service reform of paramount import- nee, and would seize the opportunity to rebuke Mr. Cleveland for what they consider bis unfaith- ‘Tulness to that cause. ‘The third are those who would vote to continue the prevent administration, aithougn not enamored of it, on the principie that st 18 Detver to Dear those ills we have than fly ‘0 others that we know not of. How large an influence the independent vote ex- erted on the result in 1884 Is appreciated by all students of politica But then that vote was united. What it can do now that itis split, by ‘Mr. Curtis's own admission, into fragments, no one can tell with certainty. Everything will de- pend on whether it has shrunk in volume im the meantime, or swelled to such dimensions that it an afford to lose a large fraction of its bulk with- cut loaing its power. ———_—+-=—__ _ ‘The strike of the engineers on the Burlington system has suffered a serious backset by the de- cision of Judge Dundy at Omaha, that the engi- neers on the Union Pacific line, refusing to move Burlington: cars, can be enjoined. In his remarks during the argument for the injunc- ton, the judge specifically Umited the bower of the court to ipterfere to those eases th which there is a conspiracy to create disturbance, derail cars, ditch trains, ete. But, If a strike consisted simpiy in quitung work and quietly walking out, he did not, see how a court was going to restrain ft. “I shall never,” said he, “order a man to work against his will by imjunction. Such action would be inequitabie, for the reason that another remedy exists, Suit for breach of contract, whenever terms of contract as prescribed are not carried out.” What appened between the utterance of theve ‘words and the delivery of the final decision? Did counsel for the corporations involved produce proof of malicious designs on the part of the strik- ing engineers? Or is the judge ready to accept as evidence of a conspiracy the fact that several men concluded, for their mutual benefit, to do together ‘What each one of them would have had an indis- putable right to do by himself? Judge Dundy has gone a long way further than Judge Gresham, but at remains to be seen whether he has kept on ‘equally safe ground. eo ‘The engineers’ strike on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad has come to anend almost as suddenly as it began, and to this hour nobody seems to know just what reason the men had for striking. That the trouble had an insuMictent cause, itis fair to assume from the fact that no state- ment of grievances had been submitted to Chiet Arthur, that no sanction had been given by him to the proposed suspension of work, and, in short, that he was as much astonished as anybody else when the news reached Chicago that his men had quitted their locomotives. It 1s probable that the resumption of traftic on the Santa Fe road is due in no small measure to bis prompt repudiation of all comnection with the affair, and his statement that, if any members of the brotherhood had done Wrong, they must be punished for it, Such a state. ment carries weight. The men concerned under- stand it and the public are satisfied with 1t, —<—<$<<—<— ‘The correspondence between Gen. Badeun and Gen Grant concerning their respective shares in ‘tue authorship and pecuniary returns of the cele- brated Memoirs will excite widespread public tn- lerest. The published letters place Badeau in an kward position, and the Badeau claim 1s in itself @ reflection upon Grant. There are no Jengths to which a quarrel of this sort may not be carried when it is once actively begun, Every American will regret that anybody should have felt calied upon to begin It, a ‘Senator Ingalls’ response to Col. Finley Anderson. 1S as free from reflectious upon Gens. Hancock and McClellan ag his original pension speech should have Dea. It has all the soulful wit of brevity, and unlike many of the Senator's witticisms has uO sting. In Its relation to the sarcastic invective whieh preceded it, which wasexpected in its place and which in due time will doubtiess follow, it re- minds one of those brilliant flashes of silence Which Syduey Smith fwund so enjoyable in ‘Macaulay's conversation. ee ‘The promised cold “ave reduced the temperature yesterday Just enough to make the out-of~toors alr delightful. ‘Tals Sample of cold wave ts highly catistactory, and the weather bureau will doubt- hess werrun With Orders of this particular line of goods, og A Philadelphia jude has decided that Keely ‘wust reveal the secret of his motor.
