The Bananas of Colombia. To the Editor of Tax EvExixe Stan: In your issue of the 27th ultimo I read with Pleasure ap extract from “Good Housekeeping” relating to the banana produced in Colombia, 8.A., my native country. AS the extract did not give any details of the natural development of that desirable fruit I take pleasure in sending the fol, lowing particulars for the information of the readers of your paper: In Colombia will be found about sixteen kinds of platano (the name generally given to uuls product). The common Platano grows from 1 foot wo 16 inches long, and is an indigenous plant. The dominico never grows more than 10 inches. It 1s a very fine pla- Yano, and its name is derived from its native place, ree as the Ted banaua. ‘The “apple guineo, when im full sie, is only 6 inches, and the smallest oné is the fig, of Guinea, The name of this fruit suggests its taste, which js like that of an American apple. It is supposed to have originated in Guinea. ‘The English banana 4s the one ordinarjly used in this country. It is so called because it originated in England's do- main. The French guineo is small and red and is @ Dative of Martinica. All these are of a milk and eggs, the people cut in the open sum. When them, watch 13 ordinarily fruits usually. ition they are ‘with the skin, and whem done a mush is made them and eaten in miik. They. ‘with Sugar and served as desserts, Ouguly Fipened and at the point of bei ey are passed through hot wat the open air for twoor three weeks. ‘There they preserved and ready for use on the fords fail me to praise worthily a Product that actually constitutes the staple food Of many millions of peopleim South America. The Dest authors of these countries have written many beautiful poems om the merits and usefulness of the piatano alone. Oh, how giadly I would change In that. An Afflicted Family.
