Bis race. “I am o»posed,” says Man's being colored. Black 1s color, If we are anything we are negrors.’ ‘This speech deserves a wrd of commendation, 8 far as it Was made fn the thterest of candor. But tts assumption of facts 1s open to criticism. Mr. ‘Taylor suggests a sctentific distinction when he demands so much nicety of speech, and there is where he makes a mistake, “Negro,” from the Latin “niger,” through the Italian and Spanish vends, to the tribes inhabiting central and south- orm Africa, 1p contrast to those of a lighter shade found tn the countries bordering on the Mediter- ranean Sea. The same term has been used through all generations since, but merely for convenience, Scieatifically, 1t 1s wrong. There are no strictly Diack men, any more than there are strictly white men. Both the Caucasians and the race at the ‘opposite extreme of the ethnical scale have colored skins, the typical Cafeasian approaching white about as nearly a8 the typical African ap- proaches Diack, The persons of purest African descent to be found in this country today are not black men, but Drown of various shades, and therefore colored. The Indian is not a red man, strictly speaking, nor the Mongolian a yellow man. They a.lare men of color, more or Jess marked. Modern usage, however, in America at least, has given to the term “colored” as dis- Unct @ meaning as ancient usage gave to the term “niger.” It was intended originally to distinguish the negro race from the Mongolian, or the Malay, or the Caucasian, or the American Indian. It ts @ sweeping term, moreover, and embraces the Octo- Toon a8 Well as the full-blooded Guinea type. It may bea slovenly designation, but, in view of its breadth of application, ft is quite as easily justi- fled as the terms “negro” and “Diack,” which err on the other side by being essentially too narrow for the use to which Mr. Taylor would apply them. Mr. Taylor himself prsbanly employs every day the familiar terms “sunrise” and “sunset,” with- out quarreling with the scientific fallacy that has een embalmed in them for centuries, He would regard it as finical and absurd tf any one required him to refer to the rising of the sun as the descent of the horizon, and yet this would be fairly cor rect, while the phrase In common use contains & positive falsehood. The word ” against which he protests, 1s entirely truthful, and to be eriticised only on the ground that it ts not exact 88 & novelty, but it 1s not based upon logical principle if tts purpose 1s to procure the ‘Supercession of Christopher Columbus by Leif tn ‘the popular regard. The same class of reagoners are now arguing that Columbus has no right to his proud position in history who a iittle while ‘ago Were crying out against the injustice done Columbus In giving to the new continent the name of Amerigo Vespucet instead of his. ‘There is little more danger that St. Christopher Will be dispossessed to make room for St. Leif in the calendar of patron saints at this late day than Ghat the continent will be rechristened for the sake of properly rebuking the selfobtrusive- ‘ness of Amerigo. History bas had its pertect work im the case of Columbus. There may have been a hundred discoveries of America betore his time, but not one of them left its mark im any perma- nent improvement of the country. It remained for his touch to wake the new world intoa life of itsown, The fame of his voyages spread over Europe, and roused the adventurous spirite of sev- eral countries to emulate his experiments tn navi- gation, and the territorial claims of Spain im the Western Hemisphere stirred the ambition of other ‘expand their own dominions by similar means It was not till after Columbus’ return that colonies began to settle In America and set tn motion the vast work of its rescue from savage rule. There were telegraphs before Morse’s ‘There were sewing-machines before Howe's ‘Steam had been used for mechanical purposes two ‘Uousand years before Watts evolved his practical idea of an engine. It is not the first discoverer who deserves the most honor, Dut he whose (iscovery gives the first real impulse to a useful process of develop. ment. Give Leif, by all means, every jot of the ‘of Columbus’ landing tn 1492 will not be interrup- ted by any sudden change im the popular loyalty to the memory of the great Genoesa, ——$—_——— ‘The ove “head telegraph and telephone wires are extending their sphere of usefulness. ‘They have Proved successes as disfigurements of city streets, and as efficient aids to the destructiveness of fire now solving the problem of the executing malefactors. In recent cases broken telephone wires hanging in city streets have brought to a speedy and appan ently painless termination the lives of view the event is doubtless an exceedingly inter- esting one, and the overhead electric wire will re- cetve im its new role due credit at the expense of ‘the ancient cup of potson, the Roman or Japanese sword, the French guillotine, the Spanish garrote, and the English gallowa The general public may ‘object to being subjected to indiscriminate experi. ments of this kind as to the efficacy, speed, and Painiessness of electricity asa means of death. But lives and property are already exposed to destruction by fire through the ugly nuisance of overhead poles and wires, and the new danger to ‘the people is hardly worth mentioning. The public 4s exceedingly patient and sweet-tempered, and the corporations and science must have “subjecta” 2 If the cheeky demands of the tobacco speculators for the removal of Statistician Dodge of the Agri- cultural Bureau be compiled with, all confidence im toe value of the statistical reports of that bureau boomer a om lost.
