It has transpired that the death of Jol Dugan, the messenger of Gen. Sheridan's office, which oc- urred last Friday, was the result of suicide. Ibis thought Dugan's mind was affected by financial troubles. Last Monday he wandered off aimlessly after leaving the War Department, and was gone | | for several hours, when he returned to his home, | 613 23d street. ‘The next day he was confined to his bed by nervous prostration, and was attended | by Dr. H. M. Newman. Friday he got up from bed, | Stating that he was gotng to the War Deparunent, and leit the house. He, however, soon returned j ome and went to Ded. ‘About halt an hour later Mrs. Duzan Went to bis bed-room and found him Dr. Newman had seen him a few bours be- fore, and he then seemed to be so well that the doctor at once concluded that his death was due to poson. In an empty glass, standing near we the ‘physician discovered traces of arsenti and a snail package containing half an ounce arsenic Was found concealed in the bed clothes, Coroner Patterson gate to the same conclusion that Dr, Newman had reached, and gave a certifl- cate of death by suicide. It was found that had purchased an ounce of arsenic at a drug store, saying he wanted tt to kill rats with. Dugan had been employed in the War Department for a numn- ber of years, and was very popular among the clerks. “He Was originally from Indfanapolis, and his body will be seut there for interment, He leaves a wife and two children, aged four and two Fears, respectively. ae Bold Burglary in Nort A SAFE BLOWN OPEN—$30,000 IN JEWELRY GONE. One of the heaviest robberies ever committed in Norfolk, Va., took place between the hour of mid- night and daylight Sunday morning, at the Jewelry establishment of Chapman & Gale, situated on ‘Main steeet, at the head of Market Square.
