Workmen at the Navy-Yard Sun Una- bie to Helicve the Ten-inch Gun. A Stan reporter paida visit to the navy-yard this morning, and learned that the 10-tneh gun 18 still supplied with the refractory breech plug, which has stuck in tts jacket for over three weeks, notwithstanding the vigorous efforts of a large foree of workmen to remove it. AS reported some days ago in Tax Star, @ large portion of this time has been consumed in heating the metal, not from the outside, but from the inside of the plug itself, 4 process that has been variously called “stupid, “1diotic” and “farcical” by many men of long ex- perience with iron and steel. In endeavoring ta discover the theory of this mode of jure the reporter learne i from one of the workmen that “it maybe 1 to soften up the gum what they put on the screw when they put 1t in, sir.” HOW THE WORK I8 DONE. The heating was discontinued several days ago, and the foremen and their assistants rigged tackle with which to wrench the plug from the breech. ‘Thick oak planks were bolted on the plate of the uz, and ob this, In turn, Were fastened two ron arms, extending one up and the other down, An immense block was then attached to each of the arms, and rigged so that the one at the top pulled west and the bottom one east. A number of other blocks and a few miles of rope were added, and the ends of the first block lines made fast to the walls of the buflding on elther side. With this arrangement eight men can exert a marvelous amount of power, A FAILURE. ‘The ropes were manned yesterday afternoon and the strain begun, ‘The ropes stretched and the pulleys creaked, but there was no movement cf the plug visible. Suddenly something started and the line of men back. But it was not the plug. ‘That remained in the breech as tight as ever. It was one of the blocks that had given way under the tremendousstrain. ‘The reporter waited operation repeated, but Was compelled to leave the great gun and the breech plug’aud ‘the puzzled workmen alone together. THE RXPENSR connected with this mistake will not be light. The plug cost about $1,000, and the time of the men who have been kept at’ work in the attempt to re- move it represents about $500 more. Then when it 15 removed by boring, as it will have to be, the Probability 1s that the thread of the breech will be Jound to be roughened 80 as to require re-boring. t may even happen that the jacket of the gun Will not stand the operation, and then a holiow cylinder wili have to be put inside and turned With a new thread. This will cost considerably, of course, counting the materials, the Libor of thé men, and the waste of time, all contributing. The on'y deduction possible from this incident, which 4s financially slight in comparison with the cost of the gun, is that it 13 a dangerous thing to experi- ment With such costly pieces of metal. prs pantaicy Outside Employment.
