A Startling Occurrence at Pettit & Dripps’ Machine Shop. A PORTION OF THE BUILDING DEMOLISHED AND SRV- RRAL MEN INJURED—THE THRILLING EXPERIENCE OF A WATCHMAN—STATEMENT OF THR POKEMAN. ‘This morning at exactly one minute before 7 o'clock the employes of Pettit & Dripps' machine shop, corner 14th and B streets, including about thirty machinisis, blacksmiths, apprentices and laborers, were startled by hearing a loud notse, followed by acrash as a portion of the butlding fell im. The notse was caused by the exploston of the boller, which 18 a 25-horss-power boller of the Ellis patent. Several employes were slightly injured, and one or two were badly hurt, but It is not thought that any will die. Mr. Wm. H. Berry, bookkeeper for the firm, was standing In the front office talking with W. H. Dean, the watchman, lives on the second floor, in the rear of the building. He had just left the breakfast table, and was on his. way down stalrs to start up the steam when the explosion oc- rred. ‘The floor gave way from beneath bim, and had he not caught hold of a piece of the ma- chinery he would have gone down with the floor- ing and machinery, and would probably have been sealded to death by the escaping steam. In Dean's room, where he had just ieft his wife, the break- fast Labie and stove were upset and almost every- thing in the room was broken to pieces. ‘THE INJURED MEN. H. A. Glover, foreman of the boiler shop, was near the botler when the explosion occurred, and was thrown a distance of 12 or 15 feet, but was not injured beyond a shaking up, dw’ C.
