In intro ee era Wn. A ees eee Paid a further complimen ‘saying that Senator Chandler would give his views: of Puritanism as it has spread over New Hamp- shire from Massachusetts, ‘SENATOR CHANDLER'S ADDRESS. Senator Chandler very promptly retorted, to the amusement ot the audience, that while he recog- nized the right of the chairman to introduce him, he did not recognize his right to prescribe the text. ‘The speaker then proceeded with an array of facts and statistics to compare the physical and mate- rial conditions of life in 1620 and 1887, Umiting the comparison to the facilities for travel and the dissemination of know! ‘He illustrated this comparison by showing that the railroad, the ‘steamboat, the printing: and the telegraph Were all unknown in the days of the Pligrim. ‘The speaker said that the progress of the first 200 Years seems nothing, while that of the past firty years is simply marvelous, In referring to the de- velopment of railroads, Senator Chandler said that the first raliroad was built in England in 1826. “Coming very near our time, Governor,” he re- marked, turning to Gov. Boutwell. “I don't remember it,” sald thé Governor with ee but at the same time in a very positive “Well.” continued Mr. Chandler, frankly, “It 18 very near my time if it is not near yours.” ‘The audience laughed at this’ sally, and the er went on With his statistics, Speaking of the advance in postal facilities, he spoke of the reports of Benjamin Franklin, the first Postmaster- General, The iast annual report of the Postmaster- General, he said, contains more matter than the Bibie, and, he added: “I am not atall certain but that he sets a higher importance upon it.” He quoted the figures showing the changes in the Postmasters since 1884, and said that it indicated marked progress in tue activity of the appointing power. ‘The postinasters who were retained in Office were charasterzed “as spared monuments of grace and mercy.” Senator Chandler concluded from his review of the great cuanges made in the conditions of Ute ‘that they must have had an effect on human character. He referred tothe doubt which ex- sted as to whether the world was growing better or worse. Hesaid that he sided with the opti- mists. He spoke in support of his hopeful view of the condition of the world, of the abolition of slavery and the liberal tendencies in religion. He ‘said that this country had outgrown the theologi- cal dogmas which degraded and injured men. He thought that the faith of the Unitarians was — afirmer hold upon the thoughtfully in- clined people, and that the country Was moving along to religious freedom. In speaking of the Andover controversy he said that the were likely to remain in charge of the seminary, and predicted that a new day has dawned upon the orthodox chureh of New England, Rev, Mr. Mayo, the next speaker, spoke elo~ quently upon the influence on the institutions of ‘Uals country of the Puritan ideas, and said that the New England influence was Still felt in all parts of tie country. THE PILGRIMS AS COMMUNISTS. ‘The next speaker was Mr, Carroll D. Wright, the Commissioner of Labor, who said in a pleas- antly sarcastic Lone that he was not so fortunate ‘as the previous speakers tn being able to give per- sonal reminiscences of the Pilgrim Fathers. He ten cailed attention to the fact Which he said was rarely referred to by listorians: ‘That durin ‘the first three years of the life of the Plymout colonists In Unis country they undertook to carry out She preci of communism. He said that they had ever) thing in common and were as thor- oughly commu istic as any community that had ever existed. Tuis fact Was attributed to seve- ral uses, Du. the speaker thought that it | Was due to the contract with the company which | ha@ sent them out. He said that, like all com- | munistic experiments, it was soon found that the | Indolent and idle would not work, and it was not until the colony had been foun on the corner- stone of private rights that it became prosperous, ‘To each person was allotted an acre of land, and tuey were toid that they must either work or starve. Upom the conclusion of Mr. Wright’s re- marks the meeting adjourned. IMPROVEMENTS AT FALLS CHURCH DURING THR YEAR—NKED OF BETTER RAILROAD PACILITIES— ‘THE FREE BRIDGE DELAY. Correspondence of THz EvENIne Star. Fatis Cuvncn, Va., Dec, 22, 1887. Our town is growing, not so much in the extent of its borders as in residential and business place density. During the past year it has thickened up perceptibly. Nine new dwellings have been built by the following persons: H. Turner, W. F. Chambitn, Mrs. Kowzee, Mrs. Spencer, E. D, Dar- Ung, E. J. Northrop, Lewis Northrop and G. W. Mankin, and the M. EL church parsonage. To these new structures may be added a grocery and feed store near the oid Falls Church aepot, butlt by Wm. H. Ellison, with which ts connected a coal yard, and a new store building with a town hail in the upper story has also been erected here. ‘The residence that was built by sundry enterpris- ing citizens and attached to the old Falls Chureh depot has been moved across the street and fitted Up as a dwelling by itself. ‘Then Prof. N. T. Graham has bulit above his old residence and ‘nearly all around it, so as to give him a very large and beautiful residence, Mr. Wilson, a new-comer, a fall the dwelling of Mr. Wells, and this has greatly eniaged so as entirely change the exterior. Mr. Darling ‘Soli his house to a Mr. Cutter, and to this an ad- dition very much larger than the original has been | bulit. Mr. A. H. Raymond has built to his resi- dence what is now the main part of his enjcyable hoine. ‘This adds to the town for the year fifteen hew structures, and most of them are creditabie to an observabie degree, alike to the proprietors and the place. The M. E. church parsonage is the gaudiest of all of them.
