THE_EVENING STAR. WASHINGTO rarar. ecember 16, 1867. CROSBY 8. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent howe fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and much greater than that stall the other daiiy papers here ded together. ‘The 12-Page Star To-morrow, ‘Those who wish to avail themselves of the ex- traoruinary advantages and attractions presented Dy tomorrow's ninety-six column Star should send in their orders as early in the morning as Possible, whether for advertising space or for copies of the paper. It 1s quite safe to predict ‘that there wili be a greater demand for ft than for ‘any regular edition of a newspaper ever issued in Washington. —$<$<—<—$ —__—_ ‘The interview with Representative McCreary, published in Wednesday's Stax, shows how a man of plain, practical sense, a8 distinguished from a mere sentimentalist, regards the project for a great international celebration, at Washing- ton, of the adoption of the Constitution and the janding of Columbus, To his mind, the culttva- ton of closer relations with the republics of the ‘Western Hemisphere south of us stands next to the tariff question in importance to our govern- ment and people. This importance Is both diplo- matic and commercial. A great deal of the bick- ering and jealousy which now disturbs our south- ern relations would be got rid of, with a saving in expense and annoyance, if our republic and its younger sisters understood each other better; and the cultivation of terms of friendship which would ‘open their markets freely to our products would about double the number of outside consumers to whose wants we minister. It may be asked in what way the holding of a celebration can further such ends. The same question was raised when Philadelphia appealed for aid to her world’s fair project of 1876, and yet noone need be reminded Of the valus of the Centennial exhibition to our ‘whole people. We have not ceased to feel the ef feet of it to this day, and far off countries where the United States, a dozen years ago, were known aly by name, are to-day using our clocks, our sewing and knitting machines. our calicoes, canned goods, lamps. and hundreds of other fruits of American Ingenuity whose consumption was ‘then confined to amuch narrower sphere. In like manner the exhibits of other countries made ‘their impress upon our own civilization. Our country has taken a fresh start ahead in all Dranches of domestic art since the great Philadel- phia show; and this has acted not more as a stim- ulus to importation than in the way of incentive ‘and suggestion to our American manutacturers, who have since been turning us out luxuries pre- viously unknown, and thereby contributing to the general comfort of iiving in our part of the world. ‘What happened at Philadelphia may be counted on to happen again in Washington, if the consti- tutional celebration is properly conducted. In- deed, tts effects are ltable to be even more gener- ous; for the closer intimacy with other peopies ‘which 1s expected to be one of its results will not affect so much the nations that A Crmisraas 00, EFP EFF EER ERE 1 SNK GGG gor EF EF RHENK G6 OO PR ee HEME & P F eek RHR EN ‘odo TO THE,BOYS. N. W.. COR. D._ Saxs Axv Courany, WE HAVE WITHIN THE WEEK ADDED SEVE- RAL NEW ATTRACTIONS TO THE GALAXY OF BARGAINS TO BE FOUND IN OUR BOYS’ AND CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT (2p FLOOR, ACORSS BY STAIRS OK ELEVATOR) THAT HAVE CREATED SUCH A FURORE DURING THE PAST MONTH. THE IMMENSE INCREASE IN THE SALES OF THIS PARTICULAR DEPARTMENT OVER THE SALES OF THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR IS A CONCLUSIVE PROOF THAT NO SUCH VALUES ARE OFFERED HEREABOUTS. IT 13 NOT ALONE THE ELEMENT OF CHEAPNESS THAT HAS BOOMED OUR BOYS CLOTHING DEPARTMENT, BUT IT 18 THE COMBINATION OF ALL THE ELEMENTS ESSENTIAL TO STER- LING VALUES. “STYLE,” “FIT,” “FINISH,” AND EXCELLENCE OF FABRIC, COMBINED WITH are our natural rivals, as those whose present and fature interests sre all bound up with ours, and ‘whose development will call into play all those agencies which our shrewdness has devised and our experience tested. By all means let us have the conference Mr. ‘McCreary calls for in his bill, combined with the elebration which he approves in his conversation. In the Senate. the committee having Jurisdiction of the subject is believed to look with a favoring eye upon the project, and it 1s to be hoped that ft will fall into equally friendly hands in the ‘House, s0 that it can be put upon a solid footing Defore the close of the long session. ———— A reform which will be appreciated by all house- keepers, as well as by the better class of servants, has just been set on foot in New York city by Mayor Hewitt, whose marshal has issued a set of rules tor the government of Intelligence offices and employment bureaus. ‘These rules include the following : Fees persons engaging help must be re- cursed anlees bie het engage i keep the made with the employer. pald by ss desiring to engage help for any particular kind of service must be returned upon a failure to furnish the kind of heip required. Pees paid upon the assurance of promise that employment will be procured upon the payment of a fee must be returned unless such employment be secured within a reasonable time. Af Mayor Hewitt enforces ils orders and makes ‘am example of two or three intelligence omico “sharps” who try to gull the pubitc, he will recetve ‘the thanks of a cityfui of people, besides setting a wholesome example for other mayors to follow. His power to puntsh does not extend beydad the revocation of the agent's license; but in every case Mt remains with the person cheated to prosecute ‘the swindler, and people will be far more ready to do this if tuey feel that they are gotag to be sup- Ported in high oMictal quarters in their campaign against fraud. Honestly conducted employment Duresus are a great conventence tothe commu- nity; bad ones are an unmitigated nutsance, and ‘ought to be drivea out of existence, and all efforts to separate the two classes should be heartily sec- ‘onded by every agent who is earaing his tiving vy giving his patrons what they pay for. ————— ‘The sudden and unexpected death of Governor Bodweil. of Maine, sounds a warning to old men Rot to allow the satisfaction of an honorable ambition to overtax their strength. Mr. Bodwell ‘was nearly seventy years of age at the time of his Geath. He was sixty-eight when he entered upon ‘the exciting political contest which placed him in. ‘the governor's chair last year. Having risen from ‘the humbiest possibie beginning to a position of proud eminence, he had acquired a habit of looking upon himself as invuinerable. He had Weathered every kind of exposure, endured the Sreatest variety of hardships and fatigue, and came out of his struggle with a sound body and an immense stock of self-reliance. At an age when men generally believe that the time has come to cease hard work and retire to their homes to pass the last year of life in social enjoyment simply, he lunged into a new occupation, more exacting in many respects than that out of which, in younger Gays, be bad constructed his great fortune. Men ‘Who have Deen trained to political work from their earliest youth confess that it is a wearisome pur- sult after taeir best strength 1s gone: if so, what Must It De to one who takes ft up when he has almost reached the limit set by common accept. ance upon human lifer Mr. Bodwell entered on his public career bravely, but, after a little, some- ‘thing guve way in the overtaxed machinery of his systema, and be fell a victim to Uis excessive faith 4m is own powers of endurance. $$ At the safe distance of four thousand miles, an anarchist periodical published in London urges ‘the assassination of the authorities who were re- Sponaibie for the hanging of the Culcago conspira- tors. It makes startling threats, too. Inspector Bonfield is to be “nounded down and hanged.” Governor Ogieshy is certain to be overtaken be fore long Dy “the wild justice of revenge,” ete., ete. Bul the most sweeping of its assertions 1s | that “overy itor will be hanged when the an- arebists ge" the upper band.” Whether this is to be confiaes to the efty of Chicago and county of (Cook in Uae State of Ulinois, or whether tts appi- cation Is universal, does not appear. Prom either Point of view ir is enough, a3 Dickens’ tat boy ‘Would say, to make one’s flesh creep. ‘There is Just & possibility, of course, that some editors ‘Wii be hanged before the anarchists get the upper and. The experiment has been tried with two ~ already, and proved measurably successful. ‘They ‘Were suspended by their mecks in the Chicago jail on the itu of November last. They had been editors of une Arbeiter Zeitung and the Alarm, Fespectively, and their names were August Sples ‘and albert R. Parsons. There are a few other Members of the profession whe may be used as subjects of a similar test if they carry their edi- Vortal ravings to te point of actually inciting poor crack-brained wretch to the commission of a murder; and one of them lives in London. $$ One of the best and prettiest things lately writtea by Ela Wheeler Wilcox is the Christmas Carol, which wil be published in Taz Stax on Sat- weday. The words are simple and beautiful, and breathe a true religious spirit, while the musical accompaniment, by F. KR. Barto.,, is sweet and ap- ropriate, echoing in Its simple but unbackneyed melody the sentiment of the poem, CieLorzpias "Ask your school teacher, doctor, clergyman and the Iawyer which isthe best.
