A Philadeiphia bride was reported a while ago as saying that she had received over two hundred ‘wedding presents “and not a single plece of silver nor a single lamp in the lot.” Her case was la- mentable. But this wedding-gift business has been greatly overdone, and many are asking if there can be no relief from it. A wedding has come to be simply a donation visit such as th» Metho- ist people make to a pastor to plrce out his salary. The true spirit of gift-making 1s lost sigat of, This must necessarlly be the case where several hundred guests inake presents merely be. cause It 18 the fashion, and because they would be thought niggardiy ‘if they falled to follow it. We all Mt, but the real motive, if 1t could bé analyzed, Would be found vo be a seffish and cow- ardly one, This s about the ease, when reduced to analys! “I can't afford to make this present; it will pinch me financially to do so. But neluier can I afford not todo it. I should be considered mean, instead of having the supreme satisfaction of bet it to be as vera! as Mr. or Mrs. Blank. ‘This gift-makiug 13.4 terrible infliction, Dut one can’t be a society person and iguore it.” ‘There 1s no heart in such @ and no sense, Where one has a circle of several hundred friends, the question of expense for the carrying outor this worse than Weak custom becomes serious for every one whose income is limited. A reform could be inaugurated if every one about to be married would send out with the invitation this ‘word: “No presents recetved.” This could be fol- lowed upand emphasized by returning them, in the event of any one betng 4o Weak as to send after being requested not to. The Philadel bride referred to complained that she had been given more cut-glass and bric-a-brac than she had Toom for, While forks, spoons, and the like they Teally needed, “and these,” she says, “we had to Go out and buy forourselves!™ That clinches the argument for giving more fdrks and spoons at a Wedding. But isn’t it Ume for a reform in these matters when brides complain that they have to go out and bus their own forks instead of having hem donated by the public? It a wedding party 4s to be a donation party, let tt be so understood. But betore all te delicate and finer teelings ure ‘apnthilated, it would be better to inaugurate a change in these things. ‘This Powder never varies, A marvel of parity, Strength and wholesomences, More economical than ‘the/ordimary kinds, and cannot be sold in competition with the muliitude of low tests, short weight, alum or Phosphate powders, Soup our m Cama, Bora, Baxsxe PowpEa Co, 106 Wall strest ML 024 ahd doylics, are the admiration of the ladies of taste. “The catalogue reads over 400 lots Of small Sai Inedium-sizea rugs, Inferring trom the ex- ess. ns seu todsy there may be expected a iondance t Une sules, Which begib to-mor- * Lee and 50 pam — Ades, 7250 that Prof. Gleason can- cotter to-night at street compileity in ti at Lisdoohvarna, Count Alexandria Affairs, Reported for Tux Evemixe Stax. NO CANDIDATES WILL BE NAMED, BUT PLANS WILL BE D FOR THE NEXT CAMPAIGN. ‘The New York Sun to-day says: The first na- tonal convention of republican clubs Will open its sessions In Chickering Hall on Thursday, Decem- ber 15. Letters have been received from almost ail the repubilcan clubs in the country notifying the New York Repubiican Club that they will be represented. Each club 1s entitled to five delegutes,” and the president of each club is entitled to sit in the conven- Uon by virtue of his office. That will make a convention of over a thousand delegates If each club sends a full set of delegates; but many clubs Will not send five delegates, e3pecklly as each club will be allowed only one vote, no matter how many delegates it sends. The objects of the convention are to form an organization of all the republican clubs throughout the country to act together next year In search of respectable voters Whom the regular party organization might not Teach, and to Work especially for the Votes of Young men; to devise some means for the co- operation of those c'ubs In State politics, and to Increase the party efficiency by making known to the masses ol the party Uhe questions at issue. It 4s stipulated in tae call that the “Convention shall not nate, recommend, or nominate any candidate for oMice.”* A couumnittee of the republican club of New York has in its charge the organization of tie conven- ton and the entertainment of delegates.
