THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: December 1, 1897, The Evening Star bas a regular, permanent bown Ade daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and much greater than that «fall the other daily papers here added together. A curious Ibel suit ts agitating tne literary cen- ters of New England and the West, The plalotiff 1s & Miss Brown, of Boston, wno has been con- nected with Miss Selma Borg, the musician, in a Mterary venture having for its object the convic- tion of the public mind that it was Lief Eriksen and not Christopher Columbus who first discov- ered America. Miss Brown now professes to have herself made a discovery of no little Importance; that 1s, that it was she who was doing all the ‘Work and Miss Borg who was getting all the credit Of their joint success. Miss Brown's Itvel suit 18 Drought against Prof. Rasmus Anderson, the Scandinavian scholar and United States minister to Denmark, who, In the quarrel between the two ladies, espoused the cause of the one with the ‘Norse name against the one with the English, and ‘said to have carried his interest so far asto make disparaging reflections upon Miss Brown, which she thus resents ia the courts, It 18 not Mkely that the plaintiff in this case can prove very serious pecuniary damage suffered by her through Minister Anderson's endeavors to as- sist her partner at ber expense; but she may suc- ceed In accomplishing that which 1s probably the Teal object of her sult—to wit, proving tothe sat- tsfaction of the scholars, authors, editors and pub- lishers with whom she is hereafter tobe thrown Into contact, that her sharein the laborsof the literary partnership was larger than appeared on the surface. Meanwhile, the controversy derives more than ordinary popular Interest from the fact ‘that it involves three persons 2s prominent as mu American diplomat, a musical celebrity and a ‘Woman to whose devout offices the fame of a now eminent seafarer from the north owes in no small ‘measure Its rescue from obilvion. $a All the Baltimore and Potomac road asks of the Senate committee ts to be let alone. Several of ‘the prominent Senators placed themselves on record last session as not afraid to disturb it in Debalt of the interests of this community. There 4s nosign that courage has failed them, and the ‘Durdens upon the community, demanding inter- ference, are not diminishe1. Knowing the general ‘views of the members of the Senate committee, and the weight of their opinions in the Senate, ‘Washington expects from them, in their report, & strong presentation of the District's railroad Grievances, and practical and effective recom- mendations for relief. ‘The bill removing all tracks at grade from the surface of the city, so far as that ts practicable, rescuing the Mall, and pro- viding & reasonably convenient union station, ought to de introduced as early as possible in the session, and, if pushed vigorously and teariessiy by the able and influential legislators whose sym- pathies are enlisted in its behalf, will probably become a law. May this hope of Washington, long deterred, be speedily realized “A colored citizen of Greene County, Obio, has ‘set a nobie example in self-help to hts race every- where in making to Wilberforce University a ttee gift 0° some thirty thousand dollars, 1f a white man bad given this sum to a colored university It ‘Would not have occasioned wide rem \rk, although everyone must have acknowledged It a handsome present. The notable feature of the case is the | eircumstance that it was a colored man’s contribu- tion to the cause of colored education and progress. At some future time, it is believed and hoped, such episodes will not be so unfrequent as to excite Wide remark; and it will bo a great day for their whole race when our colored fellow-citizens shall Rave come to recognize the value of appearing be- fore the world in an attitude of sturdy seif-sup- port, workiug for thet own profit, educating their children from their own resources, and generally absolving themselves from the state of depend- ence on the whites in which they have been reared for so many generations. —<—<$<$—— a ‘When an American jury surprises the public in a eriutoal case it 1s generally by an acquittal. An Mogieal jury generally sympathizes with the pris- oner. Most’s Jury, however, which was at first melined to believe the prisoner's witnesses by a ‘yote of seven beliefs against five disbeliets, at last concluded, twelve against nothing, that it disbe- Neved these witnesses and accepted the evidence not entirely satisfactory or conclusive, of the wit- esses for the prosecution. It depends, of course, upon What Most really said at the meeting to which the Indictment against him refers, whether his punishment in the present case will be a blow at ‘the freedom of speech, or the proper penalty for him who inettes to crime. The jury's guess at the facts In the confusing and unsatisfactory state of the evidence fs as likely to be correct a8 that of Suy one, and at any rate is the guess that counts suf the game of trial by jury. $< ‘The whitewashing tendenctes of the age are Teaily stretching to dangerous extremes, It is Rot very surprising that asa precautionary and apologetic measure some men should concede that “the devil 18 not so biack as he is painted;” but ‘when tne same kind of concession is demanded in respect to sewer gas and stagnant water the pub- Me with one votce calisa hult. It sternly refuses to discard its prejudices against stagnant water om the ground, now vigorously urged, that the odjectionabie organisms are more wide-awake and @angerous in running water. And Judge Lynch has fixed bis glittering, deadly eye upon the ‘Dangling plumber in disguise, who, In “The Sani- tary News” defends sewer gas as ‘some of the freest alz from micro-organisms that can be found,” and intimates that it is the depraved out- Side air which contaminates the innocent sewer 85 with micro-organisms ee All accounts agree in representing the feeling aunong members of the Fiftieth Congress, without Tegard to party, as strongiy favorabie to a reduc- ton of the Government revenues. So far, so good. But the sticking point comes just here, ‘when we | attempt to bring these gentlemen down to a state | ment of what they consider the right kindof a reduction and the right amount. It will bea sure vest of a Congressman’s good fa(th in making such a concession to the popular demand, whether bbe is willing to assent to some plan that is not all his own, rather than have the session wasted in fruitiess talk. The man who is a friend of the people will prove it by taking the best opportunity that offers to make @ reasonabie reduction of their burdzna, $$ —_____ ‘The Boston democrats ere not so badiy put to it for & nominee for mayor after all. Instead of accepting the citizens’ candidate, Mr. Bradlee, as ‘their Own, they have fallen back upon their present mayor, Mr. O’Brien, and induced him to run again. ‘This will doubtless appease the wounded feelings of the old-liners in the party who were fo feel that they Rad been crowded too hard alteady by the eleventh-hour converta, $< Senator Edmunds is quoted by a New York World correspondent as saying that he “would be glad to see we editor of the World the first ume ne ‘was in Washington.” Has this message any hos- tile meaning concealed underneath its hospitable form of words? Has the World been doing any- thing to Mr. Edmunds? Printing his portrait, per haps? ——<— + ‘The American “Buffalo Bull” !s in England, the Hon, William Cody.
