It remains to be seen whether any combinations to work a change can be made. ‘The chances are that they cannot, and that in the caucus thepresent incumbents will all be venominated. A survey of the field now looks that way, THE NEW YORK ELECTION. A Republican Views of the Situation. Hon. John Birdsall, of Glen Cove, the most active member of the New York State republican committee ts at the Arlington to-day. H- talked freely with a Stan reporter about New Y6rk poli- tic, He said the result of the elections was a sur- prise and a disappointment to him, but he did not think that it signified anything as to the contest in 88 “The Germans and the liquor interests were ‘more active in ald of democracy this time than they are likely to be in the Presi- dential contest. Their personal interests were at stake this tme, and they will not be a year bence. They contributed a great deal of money for this campaign. There was more money spent In New York City than has ever been betore, even tn the hottest Presidential contest, The democrats owe their success to the enormous amounts of money they spent. ‘The repubiicans had but little money to spend. With the demo- crats it Was made a national issue by the Presi- dent’s indorsement of Fellows. With the repub- cans it Was an ordinary off yearcampaign, The bitter fight between Fellows wad Nicoll brought out all the democratic vote; not near all the republicans voted. ‘This was shown by the registration. The full democratic vote was shown on the registration books, while the thou- sands of republicans failed to register at all, The democrats did all in their power tocarry the State. ‘The republicans did not know to what extremes doorkeeper, they would go, and did not put forth all their Strength, as they Wouid on a Presidential year. ‘Two years before Cleveland's election the demo- crats carried the State by nearly 200,000, and yet on the Se year got, only a few hundred wurality. Uhat proportion this ume e maocraés have not uct to 1ook forward toe “How Will Blaine be affected by this election?” the reporter asked. “Not at all,” Was thereply. “I think Mr, Blaine ‘will be nominated and elected. I think ‘he can carry New York.” “How do you account for the George voter” “It was bought up to some extent, as Mr. George and Dr. McGlynn say, I presume, and the influence of the Catholic Church lost them many votes.” “Do you think the labor party will ainount 10 much in ’8s?” “They Say they will hold together. I do not know whether they can or not. There ig tuis about it: if they go to pieces it will do Mr. Blaine He will get @ large number of their votes. Petr e voters are largely drawn from Mr. Biaine’s strength. They are not drawn from tye. Tepubllcan party, but trom Mr. Blaine. ‘There ts great difference between the Blaine vote and the vote of the Kepublican arty. Blaine’s 1s much larger New York than the regular republican party. He got 90,000 votes in New York city, a thing uever done by a Tepublican before, though he lost an immense nnmber of republican voles. The Blaine vote 1s aistinct from that of the party. They are not the same thing, ang Blaine’s is the strongest. Ido not mean to imply that Mr. Sherman or Mr. Allison, or any of the rest, would not be strong, but the figures show the’ truth of what I say of Blaine’s Indiana’s Governorship. HOOSIER DEMOCRATS WHO ARE UNWILLING TO HAVE SENATOR VOORMRES SACRIFICE HIMSELP.
