THE RAILGZOAD QUESTION. ‘The Citizenv Association of Northeast Washing! Protest Against the B. and 0. Plan—What They Propose Instead. At a spectal meeting of Citizens’ Association No. 3. (Northeast Washington), Thursday night, reso- lutions in relation to the steam railroads were adopted, which stated that while they recog- ize the fact Unat steam railroads are a necessity of modern life, and that they should have all the tactiities necessary for tracks, depots, &c., tobe 23 ceotrally located as cirenmstances will permit, the corresponding fact Isalso recognized that the city and cit aes have some rights which the railroad. companies and the local authorities should recog- ize and respect. It 1s proposed to so change the routes and depots of existing raflroads within the District as to place them all on an equal footing and afford them better terminal factittes, and atthe same time better accommodate the public, which change fs heartily favored. OBJECTIONS TO THE BALTIMORE AXD OHIO PLAN. ‘The resoiutions further state that it is known from pubilcations in the newspapers and other- | wise, that the Baltimore and Onio Railroad Co, hus submitted tothe Commisstoners of the Dis- triet and others a propo-ition fora change of ts route in the northeast portion of the city, whieh repos tion, as ts ubderstood. Is to unite thelr main ine and the Metropolitan Branch a short distance outside of Boundary street, and from thence to Tua south on either Ist or 2q streets east to E siret north, and from thence by a tunnel under sald Ist or 24 street to South Carolina avenur at avout the line of F street southeast; that 1€ 13. a] Parent that such line wall of necessity destroy Ist or 2d street, and Will obstruct nearly ev Street Tanning’ east and west, from Boundary street to E street north (nine iu’ pugber) besides Delaware avenue for nearly an entire square, and Will necessitate the butlding of a bri ige for the only Street railway in northeast Washington,on H strvet, worth at least twelve or more feet above the xrade Of said street, necessitating the raising of Said street for at least the length of a whole squ ire ou each side of said bridge, and will necessitate even higher bildges and sull greater elevations at the crossing of other streets, {ind will cross both F and G streets north on| While recognizing the importance and desirability of concentrating the tracks and passenger depots of the three main lines of railroad entering the ety, to wit: the Bal- ‘more and Onio Rullroad, the Baltimore and Po- tomae Railroad, and the Midland or Southeta line 0( rallroad, at some point south of Pennsylvania avenue, and of affording to all of said railroads better Cerminal facilities, the resolutions protest In the most emphatic tanner against t .¢ adop- tion oF recommendation of the route above spect. hed, OF any sim iar route for the Baltimore and Gato Haliroad through Northeast Washington. OLD RECOMMENDATIONS RENEWED. The former resolutions on this subject are xp- newed, viz: That the Baltimore and Oho Rafiroad Co. be required to remove ai their existing tracks from Northe.st Washington, and enter the city by & single line of double tracks, at some point east of 15th “treet east, to and along the north bank of the Eastern Brinch to a point in the vicinity of the Ballimore and Potomac tunnel, and from thence by such routes as may be agreed upon to a depot to be located south of Pennsylvania avenu that tn crossing the Bladensburg and Benniv roads Said Baltimore and Outo Kailroad soouid required to cross the same either under or over ‘Said roads, In such tuanner as not at any Ume or In any degree to obstruct the free passage of or travel ‘on sald rads. ADVANTAGES OP THE DESCRIBED ROUTR. ‘The resoiuttous further set forth that as itis demonstrable, and in fact ts adunitted by the en- gineer of the Baltimore and Ohio Ratiroad Co., Ubat the route by the river bank, above named, 1s very much cheaper than the proposed routes Via Lith and 12th streets, and would reifeve north- east Washington entirely, it is unreasonable and unjust to the eftizens occupying northeast Wash. ington for said company to tostst on any other route. As the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail- road frou Washington to Baltimore is some miles Shorter \uan that of the Baltimore and Povwomac Raliroad, and the proposed change east of 15th Sir et east Would Increase their schedule thme but 10 minutes or thereabouts, abd inasmuch as the Baitimore and Potomac Railroad Co. for the pur- pose of securing a depot soutu of Peonsyivania avenue, and a passage across the Long Bridge, Were Willing (0 enter the city via the Eastera Branch, te Baltimore and Qh10 Railroad Co, can Well afford (o do tue same, expecially when they are asking for the same privileges and benefits as Were conferred ou their competitor, the Baluunore and Potomae Co, It was resolved that the delegates of Citizens’ Association, No. 33, be instmcied to use all the ns in their power tocarry Into effect the above ns to their full intent and purpose, Natiowat Taratex.—The spectacular burlesque of “The Arabian Knights,” which will be seen all hext Week at tue Natlohal Theater, had a very successful run at the Standard Theater, New York.
