The agent says: “On Friday evening, the 30th of last month, everything was quiet and peaceful; families were nearly all around the agency to raw their rations on the following day; the agency butchers were slaughtering cattle; a large ‘rain of Indian freight wagons were being unloaded of agency geods into the warehouses; everything Was busy and cheerful. Agent Wiliams and his Wife were on the porch of his house, he reading bis mall, when, about 6 o'clock, the ed ‘Medicine Man,’ und about Mfteen or six! his followers, rode through the agency (the Dutid- ings are in the form of u horseshoe) to the slaugh- ter-house, and then partialiy separated into small Dand,, one of which, five or six in number, headed Dy this ‘Medicine Man,’ all in full war paiot and feathers, and well armed, rode around the agency Duflding, und fired into the roofs of all the houses, Particucarly at Lhe agent's office, on the east side, Where the agency Interpreter was st ANTICS OF MEDICINE MAX. “Medicine Man” then put the gun he carried close to the interpreter’s stomach, and slowly raised ft up and fired it over his bezd. Re then came tothe agent's dweliing-house, on the west side, and fired a volley at tne roof. The Indians were very deflant and insolent, and there was not the siightest provocation for it There were none of the agent's police near at the time, but had there been they could not have arrested those fellows without bloodshed, and, I believe, a gen- eral massacre. I think the agent acted very wisely to not attempting to arrest them with the police force. Two troops of cavairy arrived on the ound sbout 10 p. m., but the officers in charge d not have insiructions to make any arrests but to protect the agent, employes, ‘and property. After the arrival of troops, this same party of In- dians and foliowers continued to muke hostile demonstrations, and sent word to the roops that they were ready tor them, at the same tine re moving all their squaws, old men, and children frou thelr tepees to Lue opposite side of the river. ‘The troovs Went into camp about 11p.im. The agent, thinking everything to be quieted down, reuired and extinguished the lights in tive house, it gang of Indians next went to the trader's store and demanded amunitton, and were, of course, refused. They then fired invo the store, ‘and the trader, wife, and clerks had to barricade the windows with bales of blankets to proie.t themseives, There were five or six Dulict holes shot through the bulluing. The gang kept up ‘their shooting around the agency building, OPENLY DEFYING THE TROOPS, Bearly all night, and making night hideous with their yells, From the trader's store they again came to the agent's house, having been retaforced by several followers, and made more hostile demon- Sirations On the ‘porch of the house were the agrncy Inspector and a few friendly Indians, when “Boy that Grabs," chief of the Indian police, re- ported to the interpreter that those fellows said they had come to kill the agent. An Indian by tue name of ‘Sport’ Weut out and took hold of the ‘Medicine Man's’ horse and told uim that it was cowurdiy to attack @ man When be was in bed, and that the frst Indian who again raised bis i be would kil This demonstration aroused the employes of the agency, and severai of them promptly came to the ayent’s house, arined with weir epig afver which the officer er mand of u @ guard around U agency Dullding, ever which quiet remained until morning. THR TROOPS REINFORCED. “On Saturday morning two more troops of cav- airy arrived at the agency, and for tive or sit ‘hours this gang, aud some sixty or seventy follow- ers stationed themselves on top of a hill over- looking the agency, and atout a quarter of a mile from Where the troops were camped, and dared and defied them to come up there and take th-in— and tney do so yet. In (ue evening they disap- peared, and have been planting the seeds ot dis cord ainong the whole Crow tribe ever since, and Abusing all Crows as being old women, because Chey will not Join them to tight the Wultes, These Indians have ‘not ouly stolen horses from the Ple- ans, but trom white setilers wiong thelr line of piypuering. | ‘Tai ‘Medicine Man.! who 1s the der of this Dad element of Indians, gained nis notoriety very recently. He and a tew bucks ran off 10 # sun-dance, Which Was held at the Nortu- ern Cheyenne Agency some four months ago, and he there stood tie torture so Well that ali tue Io- dians preseut pronounced him a ‘big Medicine Man,’ and gave him tue sword, which 1s usually si¥en in such casses, and he has been quietly and gradually demoralizing the young Crow bucas ever since, Heis a 4 VERY BAD INDIAN, and if he and his foliowers are not arrested all the progress these Indians have made will be lost for Fears to come, and the whole Crow nation become completely demoralized. ‘These fellows made many threats Which Ihave pot embodied here. These are the facts of thts case which I have learned from sources I cannot question. ‘Tue longer the arrest of these fellows 13 put off the more danger there will be. The agent and bis employes are quietly and cautlou-ly attending to tueir usual jutles, DUC OD Lhe outside aii is demoralization, Indians being gathered together In bandson differ: ent portions of the Little and Big Horn, having abandoned their farms, and, uppurently, walling fo see What Will be the result, aud, also, aaxtousiy fearing raids from the Piegais, who are reported to be Out in several bodies, Soine of the old 1o- ans are couing in daliy, trying Lo apologize for the conduct of “these belligerent bucks, and some condemaing their action, but say they Will never Surrender. “There 13 ode company of intautry here.
