Enquirer rom Columbus, Ohio, October 3, says: Gov. For- ‘ker was to-day shown the dispatch from Rich- Mond, Va, stating that the Virgiala authorities have had diMculty in getting fugitives from jus- {ioe when they come into this State from the Old @, and that the governor had refused to Ronor requisitions made by Gov. Lee. In answer Wa question, Gov. Foraker said that but two re juisitions had been received from Virginia since came into office. The first was refused because, Re ‘says, the paperson their face showed the Prosecution to be a Diackmailing scheme. The ‘Second requisition was for a man named Odell at ‘Hamiitoa, and was honored and Odell was arrested, Dut was released on bis own recognizance that hé might come and see the gorernor and prevent is ase. This be did, and the governor revoked the Order temporarily until he could examine the ease more Tuily. After examining the papers he found they did ‘not comply with the statutes of ‘Ohio tn important particulars, and on the advice Of the attorney-general refused to honor the re- juisition. These facts were transuitted to Got of Virginia, with a full statement of the Guifements of the onio laws, and another requlsi- for Odeli was revetved as detective as tae first, @nd for the same reason was not honored. Gov. Foraker, it, 1s understood, sent a letter to tne Virginia governor to-day which ts likely to bring ‘he affair to a crists very soon. A Russian Adventuress. A telegram from Portland, Me., October 4, say Gardiner Floyd, a well-known diver of this city, had an awful experience many feet unaer water at Mattawamkeag a few daysago. He was at Work on a foundation for a coffer-dam at the site of a pier for a new bridge for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He had put a chain around a big rock and givea the signal to hoist It, when a large piece Of the rock broke off. It fell upon the aiver, knocked bim down, and pinned one Le foot Uo the bottom. His crowbar was just ‘yond his reach, and he feared every moment that his air Supply Would give out. The bottom was of mud and gravel, and rather soft. Mr. Floyd set to work ‘Toaig himself free with his hands, AS fast as he undermined the Fock he propped it with stall stones. He dug away for dear life for Just halt an hour before he succeeded in getting his leg free. Hits air hose Was resting on two points of a ledge, Dut by cureful handling he got it straightened out and gave the signal to hoist. He was compicte! exhausted when he reached the surface. His foot and leg were badly bruised, but no bones were broken. Spies and Nina Van Zandt Quarrel. Chicago Special to the New York World, October 4. ‘Nina Van Zandt and August Spies, her allegea proxy husband, had a bitter quarrel in the county Jail to-day. Nina visits the condemned anarchist every day. When she came today she began to upbraid him for writing to another woman. She had heard that he had written affectionately to the young woman to whom he was engaged before Nina fastened her affections upon him, and whom it issaid he sull loves better than “his erratic Proxy wife. Spies 1s sald to have told Nina with Imueh spirit that he would write to whomsoever he Pleased, at which there was a grand upheaval of ‘Tears and sobs. The anarchist heart softened then, and Spies promised to leave his former love alone. ——— a B. axp O.
