DOUGLASS. A Large Reception Tendered to Him Last Evening—"r. Douglass’ Speech, ‘The complimentary reception tendered to Fred- erick Dougiass, at the Metropolitan A.M. E. chureh, last night, was a complete success, The church was crowded with an audience comprising many well-known colored and white people. Seated around Mr. Douglass, on the flag-draped platform, were the Rev. F. G, Stewart, J.G. Smythe, Rev. J. A. Handy, Rev. R. H.G. Dyson, Recorder ‘Trotter, W. H. A. Wormiey, H. P. Montgomery, Dr. C. B. Purvis, Prof. R. H. Terrell, W. E. Mat- thews, EM, Hewlett, Rev. W. H. Brooks and others, Tue exercises were opened by a speech from Mr. W. S. Montgomery, in which he referred to Mr. Dougiass as the foremost citizen of the Republic. ‘The Rev. Mr. Handy delivered an eloquent address of welcome,” He sald that like most distinguished men of our time and country Douglass has written hts own history, has carved ont and cleared the rugged pathway that leads to the temple of honor and renown, He then introduced Mr. Douglass, who Was most enthustustically greeted. THE WOMAN WHO CASTIGATED HER FINED $10. Rose Williams, colored, who lives on 4th street, | between C and D streets southeast, was placed on Uial in the Police Court this morning, charged with cruelly beating Nettie Gant, her ten-year-old adopted daughter. Officer Wilson testilled that last night, about 121 o'clock, complaint was made to the station, and witness went to the house and found the child suffering from severe bruises about her back and arms. ‘he defendant admitted hav. Mrs, Lee, colored, who lives in the house with Mrs. Williims, testified that she heard the whip- ping and heard the calid screaming.
