- THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C.. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ‘The Evening Star has = regular, permanent bona fide daily cirenlation more than treble that of any ether daily paper published in Washington, and much greater than that of all the other daily papers here added together. ‘The spectal Senate committee which will meet thie fall to consider the whole subject of railroads in the District wili, as part of its duties, overhaul ‘Washington's street railway system. Among the wany interesting questions which will arise in the consideration of the matter Is the subject of the most desirable motive power for use by these rail- ‘ways. New cable or electric roads will be asking franchises, the existing roads will be seeking per- mission to substitute some more effective motor for their horses, and the public will desire wat im this general regulation of the railways the most efiicient motor he required by Congress which can be obtained. It is evident that the car-horses must go. inwinter and when great crowds are to be ‘TWwansported the present service 1s deficient, both Paseengers and Lorses suffer. and in waste of Dorseflesh, and otherwise present methods are un- necessarily expensive. The inclination in this city 1s now toward cable roads. A new road with the cable system was proposed last winter, and ‘Whe managers of the leading horse-raliway of the city are convinced of the superiority of that motor and propose to substitute ft for their horses. Re- capt experiments ly Philadelphia attract renewed Aftantion to the use of electricity as a motor. Both cable and electric aystems are faster and cheaper VWoperate after first cost than the horse-power wgatem, The objection to themts that all the capa are moved by one source o° power, and if & biten occurs at one point the Whole system Is at @standstill Ip one form cagpectrie railway there 8 the additional drawback Wa line of poles and ‘ovarhead wires. These objections do not apply, however, toa system in which the cars are driven separately by stored electricity from secondary Datterfes placed in or beneath them, whfeh Is the uind sucessfully tested In Philadelphia last week. At the Antwerp exhibition in 1885 careful experi- menty Were made upon different Kinds of tramway motors, and electric cars with storage batteries obtained the highest prize. Cars in present use cam be converted into electric motors by inserting these storage batteries, each car runs independently of others, and no overhead wire or Underground condult ts necessary as tu the case (Of a direct supply of current to all the cars from a single source. ‘The operation of tne storage bat- Yery cars is, however, somewhat more expensive | ‘than that of cars furnished with a direct supply | of quresnt, Dut 1s said to be considerably less than ‘Uke cost of operating horse-cara. Probably discus- ‘Slop and investigation of the matter will develop thas the choice of motors 1s between the cable and the electric storage bat- ‘ery, and the advantages of each should be carefully considered. Washington with “its mag- nificent distancey” needs facilities for rapid and Safe street transit. All sections of the District ‘should be placed in eaay communication with one apother. Wisdom on the part of the Senate com- mittee in the regulation of the routes of new Mnes of railway, and in the selection of the best motar for street railway use which the latest tests dis- close, will add largely to the comtort and conven- tegce of Washingtonians and to the development ‘Of all parts of the District — ‘The meeting to-nigitt at the armory of the Na- Yona) Rifles to arrange a celebration tn houor of | €x-Gov.
