THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON .ATURD. September 17, 1887. CROSBY 5. NOXES. £ditor. The Evening Star bas a regular, permancat bona Sde dally circalation more than treble that ef any other daily paper published in Washington, and much greater than that ef all the other daily papers here added together. = How death reverses the common order of things! There was “Mike” Cregan, the noted ward boss in ew York polities, who used, during his life, to follow Roscoe Conkling; and’ now, in his death, ‘Mr. Conkling follows ult, not into the grave, but to the edge of it as his pali-bearer. It was but the Payment of a just debt. Cregan had been very faithful to bis old leader. When Mr. Conkling went @utof the republican party, bis bumble friend could not very weil follow him out, not being in he worldiy circumstances to afford it. But he waited only a little while; and then, by assisting | im getting his party defeated at the poils because he did not like its nominee, succeeded in having Rimself turned out, neck and hecls. He took lis fall from power more to heart than Mr. Conkling did bis, and brooded over it with fataleffect. It Would be interesting to know what thoughts passed through the mind of the ex-Senator as he helped lay to rest his triend of old days, who had contributed to his rise in life, supported him with @ Diind obedience, and suffered partisan exile for tmitating his pose as a Curiolanus, — Like te woman who persists in masquerading a8.0 man, and then whines because treated with the roughness that men suffer from each other, $0 | ‘the anarenists Who Lave demanded bloodsued as ‘the only means of settling accounts between classes soctally antagonized are making a pitiful fuss because the law has decided that their blood must be shed as well as the blood of the odious police. There is no pathos in the situation of ‘these convicta. Their whole attitude is cowardly | and sneaking, and provocative of no sentiment | save disgust ina healthy mind. The very fact of thetr choice of Justice Miller as the medium for Dringing their case before the United States Su- Preme Court, because he ts understood to ve op- Posed to capital punishment, ts enough to con- dema them with every man of right feeling, ‘whether he sympathizes with their cause or not. ‘There 1s nothing heroic in tls Kind of warfare, in Which one party deals all the biows, and saves Atself from their return, not by skilful parrying, Dut by cowering, cringing and getting under cover. Yet this is the anarchists’ notion of heroism, ——— + = ‘The growing hostility in this country to the en- souragement of unrestricted immigration, based n the consideration of pubiic morals so far as the immigrants are of the criminal classes, on eco- momic considerations 30 far as the tminigrants are Paupers or“cheap labor,” and ou a feeble preju- dice against foreigners generally on the part of the few who oppose ali immigration, causes the con- ‘Yention of the newly-orgunized American party, Acrews Oresrxe. It {s evident that the new party will have ample op- portunity to exercise discretion tn the choice of Jeaders Who can command public confidence and Tespect. —__~» -=___ In another column is published a communication Soncerning the proposed free public lbrery tor Washington. Tue effort of Washington working- Men and other citizens to estat..sa al the Capital @ tree circulating library with reading rooms, such asother large cities sustain, should receive the ‘earliest encouragement and support, suck an Amsutution coatriutes to the pubite good in fur nishing an evening resort, in opposition to tne | saloons, to those who are denied opportunities for Yeading through the day, who Mud in such a ‘brary both instruction and shelter trom tempta- dou. Our labor organizations could not propose Or our citizens contribute to a more commendable ‘work, $$$ —___ ‘The “water” issue has broken out im a fresh Waea. The 3¢-inch main on L street turst early ‘thts morning, and a miniature geyser and a food resulted, And our Commissioners were all “cele- Drating” in Philadelphia. Not one here to sit upon the broken main and emulate the Dutch boy who stopped the crack in thedykes! Water-mainscan now be laid not only cheaper but better than for- marly, and practical demonstration of the fact ‘Will probably be made at once. Washington can- Net afford to have a whole section of the city per ‘odiealiy flooded, and then exposed to water-famine ‘while a defective main Is patched up. Experience ‘meeus to suggest the wisdom of laying an entirely new main > - = Te appears from the Beekman-Cleveland corre ‘spondence just published that the New York Doard of aldermen did not intend to offend eti- quette in inviting Mrs. Cleveland without her husband to present the fremen’s flags, and that ‘Mra. Cleveland did not intend to raise the question Of etiquette in declining the tavitation,—and every- ‘aay te polite and happy. 00. 4 A RRR 9585 £3 fous bs SA OEE FOR a crs.
