Objections have been made to Ume- Washing Lrees, ou the ground that ft closed up the breatuing pores io the bark, and would ultimately destroy the plants, But as trees have no breathing pores in thelr bark, and as they have been 20 treated in many thousands of canes without being Injured thereby, this objection meed not be re- peated. ORNAMENTAL TREES IX PARES AND LAWNS. Referring to the ornamental trees in parks and lawns, the commission say that they require but little if any pruning. But trees in streets are sub- jected to a great many hurtful influences trom Which park trees areexempt. Of a necessity they are eariy deprived of their lower branches, which would otherwise interfere with tne roper use of the thoroughfares This nds to weaken their stems abd sensibly de- rive them of the power of resisting storms ‘The abIIty to injury from storms 1s further increased im young trees that are making dense and luxuri- ant growths om tall and slender stems. In these Instances relief 1s given by pruning or thinning out a portion of the branches so that the Winds may blow through the tops instead of blowing them over. With some species this manipulation is unavoidable if we wish to preserve the trees from breaking or blowing down, But by far the largest expenditure in pruning atives from the necessity of removing drooping nehes Which futerfere with the Use of te streets and sidewalks. A further reason for the Temoval of the lowest branches ts their growing interference With the dissemination of lgnt from | t lamps; the interference of the follage e streets With the light from lamps calls tor speedy rellet. TREES AND AWNINGS. Applications for the retnoval of trees for the pur- pose of erecting awnings are frequently recetved. The uecessity for the destruction of valuable trees in order to erect awnings Would be obviated if the Tule was adopted that the supporting rods tor aWnings be set on a line about two feet inside the curbstones. This would not Interfere with travel being about the inside line of the tree-boxes. "Al the lower branches could be removed to a height suMcient to give entire freedom to the use of the awning, aud at the same Ume preserve the unt- formity’ and beauty of the trees. ‘THE SUBJECT OF THE CATERPILLAR PLAGUR occupies much space in the report. It says: “‘Al- though no season passes without the presence of caterpillars on the trees, yet they Rave not been so numerous in twenty years ay they were last Season, and they are {ully as plentiful this year as Ubey were during the lust. Efforts to suppress tem have caused cousiderable outlay. and with only Partial success, but experience bas Deen gaimed ‘Which will be Valuable tn future operations. Whep Uhe purking commission first went into operation, Some sixteen years ago, 1 was very desirabie wo plant *rees of rapid growth. Many of the old shade ees had recentiy been, and were being removed, to make Way for improvement, hence it was & matter of mlch importance to replace teu so | that sbade might again be furnished as soen as | Practicavle. Of those most exempt may be mentioned the Carolina poplar, the sugar, the silver and the Nor- Way maples. These are the last to be attacked, and seldom severely. The tulip tree 1s rarely the few honey locusts set in the streets iy Injured by insects of any kind. Various efforts with other methods of re- ricting caterpiliar ravages, we still continue Lat of cutting out the branches containt Webs, ag We Mud It to be the most economical and Practical method. One drawback toward more @fieclivencas in cleaning the trees has been ‘A LACK OF ¥UNDS towards the end of the fiscal year to place addt- Uonal force on this work at the proper time, that 4 on the Drst appearance of the insects. It may > supposed that funds for this purpose might be reained by reducing on otuer items “of expenditure; but a factor of uncertainty connects itseir with Ulis idea, arising from the ctrcumstance that the extent of becesulttes cannot be foretold, as the Insects vary In pumbers from year to year’ This uncertainty inight be met by a special-tund «ppropriation for the purpose, to be used as re- quired, YOR DESTRUCTION OP CATERPILLARS, “Reterring \o some of the many remedies advised for the destruction of caterpillars, that of burning | the Webs has been so often recommended that in | some cases citizens (with the Dest intentions) huve undertaken to clear the trees in front of Uueir residences by applying the torch tothe Webs 10 the great iujury’ aud disfigurement of the “tree.
