THE PUBLIC MRETING LAST NIGHT IN THE INTEREST OF THE STRIKING BUTCHRNS—THE CASB OF THE JOURNZYMEN STATED TO THE PUBLIC AND THE ACTION OF THE EMPLOYERS CRITICISED. ‘The public meeting called at Eaels’ Hall last | evening by the District Assembly No. 66, Knights case of the Journeymen Pork Butcher's lockout, | wos largely attended, every seat being occupied. | Wale the people were gathering a brass band | plyed several airs. About8 o'clock, Mr. J. W. | Considine called the mecting to order and intro- | duced Mr. August Donath as the presiding off lection met with the approval of those present, aud Mr. Donath, in taking the chair, said they had not met together to cringe, threaten or bulldoze, but, as be understood it, the object of the meeting was to call the attention of the public » tue tacts In relation lo the treatment of the } Journeymen pork butchers by thelr bosses The Kulghts of Lavor already knew the facts, and had reached a concluston based upon them, and now they wished the public to pe equally well in- | foriued, and to draw thetr own conclusions, He | suld that the journeymen butchers before they ganized were in the habit of calling firteen hours a day’s work, and for thelr services they received "a vartety of puses, Dut no one got wore than $10 per week. pesiribg to better their condition they organized and succeeded In making terms with their em. rs by Which they worked only twelve hours T day and received extra pay for extra hours. oder this arrangement thelr wages Lave reached high as $10 per Week and as low as §3.75 per %K. ‘The speaker said that in Europe, with its talked of pauper labor, the latter fgure would be called low Wages, While tals condition ng> Was bad, sald the speaker, yet the busses. Wanted even more and uroke thelr agreement by Teiusing Lo pay for extra hours, and te men were locked Out. He maintained that the butchers Were a class weil-to.do and doing a good business, and there Was no. good reason for keeping. thelt men og Wages which prevented them from sup jorting their families decently and living a3 yuma beings. Now what the knights want and What ail mén want 1s to see justice doue in this matter and their men patd fair living wages, That Was the issue and that was the object of their meeting. ts | MR. BOWEN'S ADDRESS. Mr. Donath then introduced Mr. Paul T. Bowen, Who sald that among the Journeymen pork butchers only ten men received $10 per week. ‘The juajority receive but $7 per week, aud a great inany get considerable less. He thought that 1t was in consistent C0 Want Lo get rid of the Chinese in this country because of their servile natures aud | (heir Want Of inauliness when we have a contri- | ¥ance in our midst which compels men to work | from Miteen to twenty hours per day for meager pay. Such a system Is creating iu men just such | qualities as are objected to tn “the Chinese. The [speaker then read the contract between the ‘work Was twelve hours and the pay §10 per week, with board in some cases. Mea receiving that rate Were lo be puld 25 cents per hour for extra Ume, and 15 cents per hour when their wages Were less. ‘The bosses agreed to employ only union men, ‘This agreement was in operation for @ year, and, recently, the bosses notiffed the men tiat they would no longer pay for extra time. He then reviewed the reasons given by the bosses for Violating, as he sald, their agreement, and main- tained that if the mén “soldiered” on them as they id, that they were unworthy of further empioy- ineut, and yet the bosses had satd that they were Willing to resume work under the old terms pro- ¥iding the men left the Knights of Labor. He | thought that such statements were mere excuses: | that the men, as a class, were not of that charac ter, and that’ ail the bosses Wanted wus to get tem more completely in thelr power. Tue Speaker said that if the men left the Knights and went back to work 1t would not be long before the agreement Would be agalu broken, and the men Would be at thelr mercy. Mr. Bowen sald that it was to tue interest of business men thut the Work: ing class should enjoy short hours of worl and “high” wages, and that the cause of the men involved’ deeply the interests of | tue community. He sald that ninety-seven out of every “hundred ry men fall tn business, but If the condition of the working classes Was better the proportion of such fal.ures would be greatly lessened. He said the men inter- ested in this matter were unable to talk for them- selves, and hence others had to do tt for them. He hud beard the story of one of these men, He bad een working for one family for twenty-five years, eallng at their table and laboring for them faith. fully all this time. Yet when he refused to accede to this tnjustice and work extra time for notht they forgot his long, faitaful services, and tok him that he could either work on these terms or leave. He had worked for them twenty-one hours a day, and had struggled all these years to malu- Vatn Uis tautly on $10 a week. Yet when the ques Uon of money was Involved all this Was forgotten, The “speaker maintained that this was only another illustration of how the prevent industrial system crushed out all buman sympathy. It was no Wonder, then, be tought, that there were ‘men’ inclined to socialism and other “isms” ‘which gave promise of _ something Detter than the present conditions, He thought that, im preference to such @ state of affairs, t would be better for citizens, by co-operation, to supply themselves with meat, In this matter, as in all otuers, the Knights of Labor were opposed to strikes, DUt they favored such action as would secure right abd justice, and only resorted to strikes When every other ineans tailed. They pre- Vented strikes more frequently than was generally Supposed. He thougnt that while pork was #ub- ject to such conditions a8 at present exiated that it ought to be distasteful to every man interested tn labor and justice to all. They ought not to have ap appetite for such pork, and when they informed thelr friends of the circumstances tt ought to take thelr appetite away. RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED. Mr. T. S. Banon spoke of the home ties of the Workingmen, their social feclings and their aspirations to improve themselves, and to cultt- Vate teir minds. He contrasted’ these feelin and emotions With the hard lot. which the grind- Ing necessities of life bound them down to, and made a plea for a broad aud humanitarian treat- ment of the labor questio ‘The next speaker, Mr. T. An’ invitation of tuls kind was extended from the chair, but, no one responding, Mr. Gantt proceeded.” He sald that the Knights of Labor were interested in thls matter mucu as the Society for the Prevention of Crueity to Animals are interested in the objects for whieh they are organized. ‘The Knights have only responded to the common appeal to human- ity. He said that there was a future for Journey- wen butchers and for all labor. ‘Through the Kulgbts of Labor would come, he predicted, the eurakelpation of the labor systém tn one forin or anoter, aud all would receive for thelr labor every cént that they earned.
