The stern of the Volun- teer1sso sharp that a long distance view of her, end on, suggests the bow of a boat without a nosé le. “The stern of the Thistle at the Water ine is comparatively fat. She will doubtless leave more of a wake than the Yankee clipper. The chain plates of the Thistle are bolted to the out. side of her steel hull togive additional spread and strength to her rigging. If the cutter heels to an} great extent these Dracket-like projections will Fetand her progress a8 they tear through the water. ‘The Priscilla had similar chain plates, but ner owner found they were a hindrance’ in heavy weather, and took them off. The sal of the ‘Thistle ‘probably, will be several hundred feet less than that of the Volunteer, and thus the pride of Caledonia will receive ah allowance of about a minute. ‘The long main boom and spinnaker boom of the ‘Thistle were not unwrapped from their canvas bindings yesterday. Her racing sails were piled on the floor of the cabin. ‘The one that will at~ tract most attention when the cutter takes a trial Spin down the bay week after next, or whenever she will be able to carry it, 1s the Cream-colored ‘silk-cotton balloon jib-topsail. thread composed third silk, and is sald to weigh only 17 pounds, ‘This would make {t about as light as paper. The Scottish syndicate that owns the Thistle courte- ‘ously refused tosend a plece of the stuf of which the balloon jib was made to Gen. Paine, but the Gen- eral has got the lightest and strongest cotton-sik sail he could have made in this country. ‘That it isa mighty good sail was shown tn the races of the New York Yacht Club's cruise. All the yacht’s spars wil be in place on Sunday, when several Scotch societies will go down t0 Tompkinsviile and inspect her. The ponderous racing spinnaker and inain booms will have to be lowered from the pler to the deck of the This- te, which will go alongside the pler to receive them. ——_—+e+_____ A Naxgow EscaPe.—An attempt was made Wed- nesday might near Belvidere, 11, to wreck a pas. senger train on the Northwestern Ratiroad. ‘Two inen Were seen hurrying away just as the train came along, and it was wearly derailed by, a huge stone that had been placed between the rails, The cow-catcher was smashed, but no damage was done, Fifty passengers were aboard tne train.
