Adispatch to the New York Sun gives the fol- lowing account of the start of the yachts from Cottage City, Masa, yesterday: The flagship Electra anchored a mile and a half due north of the little red light-house on the summit of East Chop, and promptly at six bells, or 7 o’clock, fired the starting gun. That was considered the start- ing time of each yacht, and every skipper did his Jevel best to be nearest the line, so that he could get the advantage of crossing first. This is the English way of doing the thing, and is termed ‘starting from gun fire. The result was some very pretty maneuvering back of the line for favorable positions. The Puritan had calculated to such & nicety the time of the start that the old cup fender’s nose pole was on the line when the gun boomed, That superb white-steel clipper, Lhe Volunteer, had not been idle in maneuvering. She reached up on the wind on the port tack and crossed the line only thirty seconds later. Mean- while the other yaehts were crowding one another in their ambition to get ahead. Acoldents seemed imminent several times, but’ they were luckily avoided by the expertness of satling-masters. The Puritan broke out her iittle jibtopsail as she crossed the line, and the Volunteer shook a large bit of canvas on the lively breeze a moment later, und What a joyous sight it was to pauriode tars, gilt-edged and Otherwise, to watch the slim model set along. She carried, beside her big mainsail, her working topsail, fore staysatl, ny ‘and jibtop- si She bounded to windward of the Purt- tan, and a few minutes later started sheets and swooped down upon her lke a hawk on @ hen, and passed her with surprising ease. Following the Volunteer across the line In a perfect swarm that someti¢nes threat- ened to become a tangle came the cutter Stranger, the sloop Gracie, and’ the flagship of the Eas' ‘Yaeut Club, Commodore Weid’s schooner G ‘The Stranger Oe shaved the fugship. The sloops: Cinderella and Atianue crossed next, and then the schooner Wanderer, the cutter Bedouin, the sloop Yesult, the old America, and the cutter Huron. ‘The Mayflower was belated and crossed five min- ‘utes after the Puritan. The schooners Troubadour and Kesolute, the big iron sloop Priscilia, the schooner Nokomis, and the — steel Titania followed in the order named. The Titania had barely room enough to we between the Nokoinls and the flugsbip. Titanta’s skipper did not wish to get to lee ward of the big two-sticker, and he Dianketed. Sxiiuming through the white ‘Irilis after the Tita- nia Were Lhe schooner Iroquois and Sachem, the catter Clara, the schooners Magic, the sloop Poca- hontas, that collossal and gorgeous two-sticker, Norseman, the schooner Varuna, the cutter Ulidia, ‘and the schooners Mohican, Repubile and Phan? tom, Which was the last yacht that crossed, at 7:12:13. ‘The schooners Fleetwing, Harbinger, Viking, Haleyon, Wave Crest and Crusader did not. enter the race, and started ahead of the contest- ants for the Morgan Cup. The sloops Miscifet, ay stery, Athlone, and Concord also preceded the ject. THE WIND INCREASED as the yachts went on, and the sea grew a trifle lumpy. ‘The course was east by north, and al stood on the port reach, with the wind well for- ‘ward the beam. The smallercraft soon found that there was too much air stirring for Jibtopsails, and they Were hauled down. Xi the big boats clung to theirs. Many of the schooners ‘carried balloon maintopmast staysails tn addition to jib- topsatls. Tt was splendid weather to test the qualities of big boats. ‘The Puritan was handied as well as the veteran Capt. Aubrey Crocker knew how to handle her, and every yachtsman know: that is In almost thcomparable style. But the dear old craft hadn't it in her to successtully wrestle against the Volunteer in that breeze. The Puritan’s lee rail was frequently awash, and spray broke over er bow, but the steel yacht stood up like a tower, a leaning one, and cleared the water with as little commotion a8 a swordiish. The own- ers on both boats were having them satled in the {rienditest. but_ most sincere rivalry for all they were worth. Steadily the steel marvel bounded away from the Purit The Mayflower's chase ‘was a stern one, whi lly long. Capt. en Was not only sailing her against a very Yacht and an excellent yacht, but against two shrewd skippers tussling to Keep up their rep- utations. ‘The Gitana, Commodore Weld, and the Troubadour, Resolute, Republic, Nokomis, Wan- derer, Mohican, Palmer, and Norseman were also having a little Face among themselves fora sweep- stakes of $100. The Gitana, Which Was one of the leading schooners of the fleet, broke her bobstay when about an hour out, and returned to Vineyard Haven, ‘The Gitana was also matched to sail the Iroquois for $100 a side. Commodore Weld re- ceived the coiumiseration of Gen. Butler. As the Gitana, returning, passed Ue America the general put his right hand on his heart, lifted his Panama pat, and indicated by other pantomime that he regieted that the America would have to forego the pleasure of winning the $100 prize froin the Gitana. The ttle Yseult came to grief half an hour after starting. ‘The wind was too strong for her jibtopsaii, and she “carried away her topmast half an hour after the start. AUS O'clock THE FIVE GIANT SLOOPS were leading the fleet. ‘The Volunteer was half a mile ahead of the Puritan, ‘The Atlantic came hunted by the Priscilla, which was surprisingly good work. She went by the ldge sloop at 8:50. ‘The Wanderer was then Schooner. ‘The old America was close and the Paliner not far behind. But the Sachein_ w y s Ke and pass tein. The Volunteer passed Cross ithp Lightship at Tne wind was nearly dea allead now, and the steel clipper took in her Jib- Topsail. She was just about a mile ahead of the Puritan, ‘The Mayflower had gulned on and over- taken the Atlante and Priscilla, and was now half amile astern of her elder sister. The wind was decreasing and there was quite & jump of sea on. The tide, Which nad been against the racers thus far, Was just beginning to turn. ‘The M went to the starboard tack at 9:33. The of giants got to the Handkerehlet lightship tn a succession of short tacks. ‘The Volunteer showed her great superiority in dead to windward work. She ode the sea Ike a big swan. From the Hand- kerchief to Shovelful lightship the tde was fair. Tue brisk wind had moderated to a gentle breeze, and it soon became evident that even the Phenomenal Volunteer could not cover the 126- Tulle course until early morning, unless favored b} free wind. She passed Suovelful ight at 10:20. ‘The Puritan was then 2 miles dead to leeward, and the Mayflower, Priscilla, and Atlantic were stretched out astern of her.’ The Bedouin was ahead of the Gracte, and the steel Titania followed her. ‘The Sachem Had overhauled the Paimer and ied the schooners, AU Pollock Rip, about 38 miles from the start, the leaders were Umed thus from the El Volunteer, 10:41:45 Bedouin, 11:10:33; Sachem, 11:23:55; Palnier, 11 128:33. THE PURITAN LOSES HE TOPMAST. A telegram to the New York World trom Chat ham, Mass, August 8, says, The sloop yachts at 12:15 a.m, were standing in from Pollock Rip toward the Chatham Light. The Volunteer leads the fleet. ‘The Volunteer continued to increase her lead over all Ull out of sight. The Stockholders’ committee was not prepared to make final report, and the meeting adjourned to meet to-day noon at the office of the Cincinnati, Hamil- ton and Dayton road, in New York city.
