Newman’s. THEY PACK UP THE SILVERWARE AND OTHER THINGS, BUT FAIL TO SECURE THE PLUNDER. While patrolling his beat, about 2 o'clock yester- day morning, Officer Groff found the basement door of the residence of Rev. J. P. Newman, No. ‘3u6 C street northwest, open. ‘The officer, assisted by Sergeant Falvey, made an investigation and came to the conclusion that there were two burg- lars.at the house. The panel in the basement door Was cut, but before getting through it the burg- lars seem to have discovered an easier way, and one was lifted to the transom by the other, and in that way they managed to unfasten the door. After getting into the basement the burglars found toat the door leading up stairs was secured, and again they attempted to cut the panel, Without fintshiag the job it seems that they went out of the back door to the area way, and one was again lifted by the other to the back window, when they managed to get into the upper portion of the house. The burglars evidently knew where the stlverware was kept, for they passed the second floor, where a number of valuables were, and went. to the third story, where the silverware Was. ‘They also packed a large number of phot hs, taken in a. countries, and the officers think they intended to take these for the first load, and return for other goods, The bureau drawers had been ransacked, and everything was scattered about the house, So far as can be ascertained nothing was carried off. Mr. Emery has taken charge of the premises during Dr. Newman's ab- sence from the city. ‘The Columbia Regatta. RESULT OF THE RACES SATURDAY EVENING. REMARKS OF JUDGE MONTGOMERY ON THE MATTER ‘OF LOW BAIL FOR CRIMINALS. ‘This morning, in the Criminal Court, Judge Montgomery, a new trial was awarded In the case of Jos. C. Hayes, who was indicted for housebreak- ing, larceny, and receiving stolen goods, and con- Vieted of the last-named offense. Hayes was charged with burglarizing the house of Mrs. Col- grove, and was last week convicted of recetving the stolen property. The court set the verdict aside, saying the Jury mighteaslly have got a inistaken idea of the case. ‘Mr. D. E. Cahill asked that as Hayes had been acquitted on the greater charge that his ball be re- duced, the amount given before being $700, and the acknowledged thief, Bud Warner, was at large. Assistant District Attorney Lipscomb said he had been asked lo suggest an increase to twice the amount Damed—1,500—in view of Hayes’ char- ae The court said that he had been astonished at the low bail taken here. He could not shut his eyes Uo the fact’ that Hayes’ record was bad, and it was shown that he was the boon companion of one of the greatest scoundrels in the country—a man who would break into houses for mere astime. He would therefore require that he give null in $1,000, ‘Mr. Calilll thought that he might get $700 bail, and intimated thatit was probable that Hayes would be used in a counterfeit’ case, and in such event it was probable that he would not be again called in the present case. ———— Organizing a Gentlemen’s Riding Club. A dispatch from Scranton, Pa, states that Mr. Birdseye, pension agent, in that city, has recelved instructions from Gen. Black, Pension Commis. stoner, to notify the banks in Scranton and Wilkesbarre not to pay a draft for $1,723, in favor of Mrs, Elizabeth H. Bronson and signed by Gen. W.H. 0. Davis, pension agent at Philadelphia. ‘The draft wasmade by Gen. Davison July 7th, in accordance with instructions received from the Department at Washington, Oscar J. Harvey was attorney for Mrs. Brouson. The draft was for- warded to Mrs. Elizabeth H. Bronson, 47 Union street, Wilkesbarre. Mrs. Bronson lives in a little hamlet 4 miles from Wilkesbarre. This fact and Harvey's connection with the case aroused the suspicions of Gen. Black. When Col. Birdseye Went to Wilkesbarre Saturday he traced the draft, and obtained possession of {t and other, papers 1h the case. Dispatches recetved from Wilkesbarre say that the draft was received by Miss E. Har- Vey, a sister of Oscar, who Lives at 47 Union street, on ‘Thursday. When’ Birdseye demanded the draft She informed him that she did not have it, but directed him to a gentleman living in the city who had it in his possession. ‘The paper was delivered fe Birdseye by this gentleman, who 1s supposed to be Harvey’s brother, without further parley, In his dispatch to Col. birdseye Gen. Black sald the claim was “undoubtedly a fraud on the Govern- ment.” ‘THE GOVERNMENT LOSES NOTHING, Gen. Black said this morning, in conversation with a Stax reporter, that the Government had not lost a cent, and that the draft had been re- covered. He did not know whether there were any other pension cases in which Harvey ap- peared, but he had given instructions to have the matter fully Investigated, Montgomery County (Md.) Primaries. A very large vote was polled at the primary elec- tions held in Montgomery County, Md., on Satur- day. The regular ticket carried the day. For gov- ernor, Col. The nasty weather prevented Gen, Paine from going on the Volunteer to Boston Saturday, as he intended. The Priscilla sailed for New London at 5:55 yesterday to prepare for the coming cruise of the New York Yacht Club. The Volunteer stood off in the Priseilia’s course until about half way to the Cape, about 25 miles, Both sloops held the same tack ntl out of sight from the land and Well nto the bay. ‘The Volunteer gained per. ceptibly on the Priscilla, and showed One win ward work. She 1s stiffer than elther the May- flower or Puritan, and it ts believed will lay closer ‘othe wind than either of them, A dispatch to the New York Sun from Marble- head says: People who saw her under sail Thurs. day and Friday have been analyzing her good ints among themselves, and have been searcl ing for her Weak spots, though doubting if she has any. Her queer-pointed stern provokes the most comment. It comes toa blunt point, Just like a duck’s tail, and all the old saflors aré prejudiced ralnst it.” With her bowsprif off she alinost looks like a double-ender, and a greenhorn might easily bein doubt as to the direction in which It was intended she should inove. But there 13 hardly a question that her saucy pointed stern gives her inore speed. Indeed, her shape seems to have re- duced friction to the lowest minimum. In her trial trip the Little tender which the Volunteer a astern made a bigger wake than did the big sloop herself when Vearing, through the water at a ten-knot gait. at highest speed she left scarcely a bubble to mark her track, Her owner and designer think she 18 an improve- ment in both respects over her predecessors, In some respects Friday's brief run outside was a bet- ter vest than thatof ‘Thursday. ‘The wind was very puffy, and she was caught in several sharp flaws. Shé certainly showed more stability than either the Mayflower or the Puritan, and Capt, Hoff says she is a much better boat in a head sea than either of the others. A necessary alteration in her mainsail to prevent bagging will doubtless make a perceptible improvement, and when she is put_in thorough racing trim she will certainly astonish the yachting world. Nearly every one ‘whose opinion is worth quoting admits that shie will outsall her elder sister, the Mayflower, and some are quite sure the measure of her superiority Will be proportionately as great as that of the Thistle over the Galatea or Genesta. eee McGarigie Gone. A CONVICTED CHICAGO BOODLER MYSTERIOUSLY DIS- APPEAKS. A sensation was caused in Chicago early yester- day by the discovery that J. McGarigle, ex-warden of the county hospital, who was recently con- vieted of being concerned in the wholesale rob- Dery of the county, had escaped. Mr. McGarigle and Engineer MeDonald, of the hospital, had been Jointly convicted and sentenced to threé years in the penitentiary, | Judge Shepard had refused to admit them to ‘bail, and they were in custody, awaiting the result of @ motion for anew trial, Between 8 and 9 o'clock last night Sheriff Matson took MeGarigie to the house of the latter, where a conference Was to be held with the State's attor- ney, Grinnell, between whom and the escaped boodler there appears to have been several conver- sations of late. While at lis home, the prisoner decided to take @ bath, and retired for that pur- pose. After waiting Yor some time the sheriff be- came uneasy and on going to the bath-room found that his man had 1 he police were at once notified and search was begun, but so far nothing has been learned of the fugittve's whereabouts, ‘There are rumors that McGarigie has been spirited, away in accordance with a plan of the State’s at- torney, but for what purpose as not been made clear. THE “‘BOYS” HAD TO BE LOOKED OUT FOR. ‘The interest in the boodle case n Chicago Satur- day was greater than ever on account of the dam- aging testimony given by ex-Commissioner Lynn Friday. Saturday he was subjected to a severe ¢ross-examination, but in the main his testimony was unshaken. ‘The members of the firm of Clow &Co., next gave their experience with the boodiers. ‘They’ estified that Ed, McDonald demanded com. auissions from them on all orders, and when they ‘appealed to Kiehin and the chairuian of the board of commissioners, and one of the defendants, he sald they had better take care of the “boys,” or else they would find themselves at the end of thelr John J.
