THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON FRIpAy “The Evening star has a reaular. permanent bona fide daily circulation more than trebio tkat of anv other daily paper published im Washington, and much greater than tnat «7 all tue other daily papers bere added _tomether. = aanampTan-eesneeeammemearsenmt "Those who leave the eity during the summer oan have The Sar mailed to them for any length of time, and the address changed as often as desired. ‘The subscription must be invariably paid in ad- vance. .. ea Advertisers ‘Willserve their own purpose best, and st the same time greatly accommodate Tue Srax,if they will send in before noon to-morrow their snnouncements for the extra large edition of Saturday's paper, the forms of ‘which must be sent to press much earlier than on the other five days of the week. egg Se ‘The investigations which the New York World has made into the relation of the labor question to next year’s political activities have evoked many comments from prominent men of both parties, but thus far too little attention seems to have been Paid to one important phase of thesubject. The Igbor vote is so commonly counted as in effect a democratic vote, that it has been cited by political mathematicians ag an offset to the prohibition Vote, which they have put down as primarily re- publican. This ts a dangerous way to calculate. ‘The labor vote ts a large one, for instance, im Penn- sylvanta—or would be, if properly marshaled—and Yet its defection from the democratic party would have no appreciable influence on the result of a general election. The same may be said of Massa- ehusetts, and of a dozen other States, In such ‘States as New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut, on the other hand, where the old parties are di- ‘vided by a pretty narrow margin, the defection of the working people would make a difference, and large one. But, outside of the big cities, what isthe Proportion of democratic to republican working- ment ‘The protective policy of the republican party has drawn into {t a number of workingmen, ‘which would astonish any investigator who had not witnessed the operation with his own eyes, If a poll were taken of the adult male help in the manufactories of the interior of New York State, for example, it would be found that the tariff question overlays every other in importance in the minds of these men, and that party names count for nothing when the protection issue 1s fairly joined in any campaign. The Butler vote Of 1884 just about balanced the prohibition vote; and yet, with the tariff kept as far a8 possible in the background, the democratic majority was so slight as to leave the result in doubt for several days. A labor party would also divert a consid- erable Vote, which, though naturally democratic, ‘Was in 1884 cast for Blaine and the republican Ucket. It will not be wise, therefore, to base all estimates of the effect of organizing the labor ‘Vote into a solid mass on the theory that the dem- ceratic vote would be the only one seriously de- pleted thereby. The promise of advantage is doubiiess to the repubitcans, but many estimates of the extent of the benefit seem misleading, ———$—<— ‘It ts with a general sense of relief that the pub! Ue will read the news that Mr. Powderly denies Lis reported intention to resign the chief office in the Knights of Labor at the coming convention at Minneapolis. The loud talk which certain dele- es to Richmond last year indulged in, about turning bim out did two things: {t proved the in- ability of the Knights as a body, or of any consid- erable number of them, to agree in the choice of a ‘Successor to the present Lead of their order; and 1% proved the unwillingness of the bulk of their fellow citizens to extend the same favor to the ‘Knights under an unknown leader as they haden- Joyed under command of this known one. §0 far from there being any radical change in these two conditions, brought about by the events of the last twelve months, everything has tended rather ‘Yo increase their intensity. The malcontents with- in the order are more hopelessly divided than ever, and the people outside of it more set in their re- solve to sustain the interests of Mr. Powderly. ‘They have learned to put s good deal of confidence im him. It 1s true that some of hts theories strike profounder thinkers 8 unsound, and that his methods have sometimes betrayed a disposition to ‘Yemporize with an element with which he had nothing incommon. Bot these drawbacks are ‘Anaigaificant as compared with the man’s general ‘sincerity, his practical notions about the habits and conduct of workingmen, his liberality of spirit toward the laboring world, outside of the order, and his never-fatling counsels of peace, moderation and respect for the law. It would be @ sed mistake for the Knights, at this critical Period in their history, to depose him, and it ‘Would deal the order a hard blow if he were to re- sign of his own accord. Let us hope that neither misfortune may occur till the whole labor prob- Jem 13 a good deal nearer {ts final solution, —__—+-=—____ ‘The impression strengthens that the B. & O. deal 1s of the Snark species. Those who have read the Jueld account of the hunting of this mysterious creature will remember the frightful consequences ‘which were to follow should the Snark tura out to ‘de also.a Boojum. There are indications that this Snark is © Boojum, and that damage and expense are to follow in its course. For parties of the sec- ud part claim that the deal is not dead, or if dead, that it has been illegally disposed of, and ‘they demand an exhumation, a coroner's inquest, and enforcement of the law. Newspaper men will ‘de divided between impatience at the prospect of a renewal of “deal” prophecies and and a fiendish joy that the evasive deal isto be dragged into court, and dissected and teally examined inch by inch, and the Snarkish lystertes of ite being exposed to the curious eyes of all the world. — -_ “The very commonplace Mr. Smith,” as Justin ‘McCarthy described the conservative leader of the House of Commons, is either acting out of char. ‘acteror was misdescribed. There was commonplace in his contention that Dr. Tanner deserved suspension from the House on the addi. tional ground that he imputed falsehood to Mr. Long by telling a different story about the words | yi? used tm the famous controversy, and by contra- dieting when contradicted. His idea was bril- Uantly original. It was unique. When Tanner and Long contradict each other, and Smith openly assumes that Long tells the truth, Tanner 15 the only one who must be punished for imputing falsehood. Decidediy, this Smith isnot common- place. —_—_——» -—___ ‘The Ohio democrats endorse the administration of President Cleveland with no uncertain voice in the first paragraph of thetr declaration of princi ples. It may L Recsatiee however, that Mr. Seney, on taking his place as permanent chairman Of the convention, submitted a foot-note, as it ‘were, in a speech condemnatory of civil service re- form, and questioning the wisdom of the Presi dent’s policy in this direction. bio borders Ken- tueky, and seems to echo, though feebly, that deciaration, NOTICE WE WILL cLose | ‘SS Lx GALT BRO. & CO., Jewelers, pe pt OE when FIRST- CLASS DRY GOODS can be tought st prime such ie the fact at & L.
