THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C., MONDAY, JUNE 20, 1887-SUPPLEMENT. A Terrible Tumble. ‘THB WORLD BALLOON FALLS THOUSANDS OF FEET LIKE ‘A SHOT. ‘Mr. Moore’s balloon, which left St. Louts Satur- day and came down within a few hours near Cen- tralla, Liltnots, as stated in Tax Stax, attained a height of 16,000 feet above the surface of the earth at 5:20 p. m., according to the instruments of the United States Signal service. This is the highest on record in America. At this point the thermo- meter marked 37° Fahrenheit. It seemed very coming froma heat of 959 in the shade an hour before. The air-ship left the earth as if re- Tuctant to depart, Dut once on 1t8 voyage 1t gained speed raptily and was quickly among the clouds Moore nurt bis hand badly Just as they were as. cending, and tne loss of biood rendered him sense- lest, Ob of the party relates these incidents: “Tiazen sings out, ‘We're going too fast.” There 43 much excitement, but it calms in a minute, for the metrument records a falling. Again the ‘sig. hal oMicer gives & warning. ‘We are falling Bevadtulisy: And tosses out a handful of ctreulare ‘They shoot upward. Moore, half aroused, real- tad the peril and calls all hands to drop ballast. ‘The sand fps scarcely faster than the car, and the earth Bems to fy upward: rivers, ‘elds, houses spread out as a Vast map, growing terribly tach minute, Moore sings out: “Something Wrong, boys; it we don’t stop her we are lost;' 1,000 feet from earth and still tumbling madly; ‘70, and the drag touches earth: 600, and the check fs perceptible. At 400 the balloon skims along, falling no more; ‘the 300 feet of drag rope Testing on the earth gave the relief. More ballast was thrown out, and the air ship again ascended, this time to 6,000 feet. ‘The aeronaut then noticed that the bag was sagging, and announced that a landing must be made.” When within a few hundred feet of land the drag rope skimmed along the earth, making a trail for four tulles, and in its wake followed « crowd of natives, were Several times they canght the hurled roughly to the ground. At August Palm’s farm, 7 miles from Centralia, I, bts sturdy wife gave the drag rope a half dozen turns around an Apple tree and brought the monster up with a jerk. the wind caught the folds of the balloon and it soared like a kite. For an hour the farmers tugged at the rope, and when the aeronaut pulled the rip cord to his amazement he found it already loose, and this was the cause of the fearful fall, so nearly disastrous to the occupants of the airship. The carrier pigeons that were released from the bal- toon at 3,000 feet altitude have appeared at thelr homes. ‘The balloon will be Drought back to the city, and arrangements are now being made for another ascent.” Irish Leaders to be Arrested. EXPECTATION THAT DAVITT, O'BRIEN, DILLON, AND SEXTON WILL BR PROSECUTED AS SOON 43 THE CRIMES BILL BECOMES A LAW. London dispatches say the Salisbury government 4s inclined to encourage the Irish leaders to make violent speeches, in order that, when the crimes bill becomes a law, they may be arrested and thrown into prison. Mr. Davitt has on several oc- castons repeated his advice to the people to use force in resisting unjustifiable evictions, and the dispatches say he will certainly be arrested as soon as the government fs clothed with the_arbi- trary power afforded. by the crimes bill. O'Brien, Dillon, and Sexton, it is also asserted, have Deen marked for arrest at the first convenlent opportu- nity. The government 1s represented as being especially anxious to arrest Sexton, It has been Sald publtely within the last three days that Sex- ton could cause a revolution of the Irish people by a word, if he chose toorder one. He 1s probably the only man, except Parnell, of whom this is true. His conservatism, Instead of lessentn; influence, addsto it and makes it invincible. These four are the only ones whom the government are likely to attempt to muzzle. Blinded by their ant- mosity to the Irish national movement, Lord Salis bury’s ministry are about to make the fatal mis- take of arousing the people to flerce anger by im- prisoning their guides and counsellors, who have already done so much for the cause, and who are jooxed to for complete deliverance.’ ‘The outlook is serious, ‘The McGlynn Demonstration. REPORTS DIFFER AS TO THE EXTENT OF IT. The N. ¥.Sun says: The demonstration tn honor of br. MeGlynn Saturday night was one of the largest that has ever beea held in Union Square. From 12,000 to 15,000 men paraded over the 33- mile circuit. Along the line of march the greatest | kind of enthustasm reigned. The cry, “Don’t, don’t, don’t go to Rome!” was heard continuously along the line, and was echoed back by the people standing on the sidewalks. Around Union Square in front of the cottage thousands of people were packed together. The cottage was draped with the Stars and Stripes. In the center of the shed covering grand stand was a large American Id surmounted Dy an eagi When Dr. MeGiyun appeared In 17th street, mak- | ing his to the platiorm, cheers arose, and cries of “Hurrah for the Soggarth Aroon,” and “God bless our martyr priest.” Men waved their hats, and women shook their handkerchiefs. Peo- | pie shook the deposed priest by the hand, and tt Was nearly fifteen minutes before he could reach the platform. An effort was made to raise the Doctor on thé Shoulders of several men, but ne insisted on Walking. When he reached the plat- form several ladies belonging to St. Stephen’s church presented lim with ets. Dr. MeGiynn and Henry George both made speeches, and Teso- lutions were adopted commer ‘Dr. MeGlynn’s attitude toward his ecclesiastical superiors and Lis refusal to go to Rome. No interference by qfome im American politics was the text of the ening. “rhe Wortd says: The McGlynn demonstration Saturday night was not as pronounced numerically as it might bave been. About 8,000 men paraded the streets and were reviewed in Union Square. ‘The percentage of Germans was very large. Alto- getuer the performance hardly eame up to the ad- Tertisement. After the dischazge of the coroner's Jury Mr. Spalding was released from, the custody of the sheriff. A correspondent of the Baltimore 5 : “Public oplaion 1s divided regarding the lynching. ‘The action of the Jury 18 probabiy a fair showing of the Judgment of the people of the county.
