WINDING UP THE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE. In the debate on the crimes Dill in the House of Commons last night Mr. Finlay, liberal unionist, moved an amendment that any association or as- soctations proclaimed be specifically mentioned in the proclamation. The government accepted the amendment. Mr. Healy moved to omit the words “or associations,” sothat each proclamation should Sarees anes emer fused to accept. Mr. Clancy, nationailst, said that Mr. Finlay’s object was to enable the viceroy to mix together the national league and some mur- der organization. Mr. Healey’s motion was re. jected. It ls announced that Mr. Gladstone will ring the debate to a close on Friday night by an exhaustive criticism of the government's methods of coercion. Mr. Smith, on behalf of the government, purposes stopping the debate at 10 lock on t cht by declaring the bill past the committee stage, and demanding a division on a motion toreport. AN APPEAL FROM THE FAMINE-STRICKEN INBABI- TANTS OF AStA MINOR. ‘The oMficers of the American Board of Foreign Missions at Boston have received dings of a famine now prevailing on the Cilicia plain, in Asia Minor, a region about one-half as large as the State of Massachusetts, bordering on the Mediter- ranean Sea and embracing the ancient cities of Tarsus and Adana, The harvest time has just but not a single sheaf of will be cut fa all the plain ordinarily so fertile. The Rev. G. F. Montgomery wrote on May 5 from Adana of a severe winter, with much suffering, during which the people had itved on in the hope of better times at hand, but the spring 1s worse than the winter. Already most of the farming Villagesin the vicinity are deserted. Numbers of people are trying to sell ‘copper vessels, beds, furniture, cows and oxen on the street at one-fourth of thetr worth. Cows are ‘deing sold at thirty plasters each, about $1.25. A committee appointed at Adana has presented an appeal to benevolent people in America. This section ofthe country contains over 100,000 in- habitants, of whom $0,000 are destitute. An earnest appeal for aid 1s made by the American Board. a Wonder. RAILWAY WORKMAN DISCOVER AN IMMENSE CAVE IN ‘WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINS. A Baltimore American says that while railroad laborers were excavating rock about 4 miles east of Anderson, W. Va, the explosion of a charge of powder revealed an opening into a cavern of yet unknown extent. During the afternoon yesterday it was explored for upwards of a mile and wonders rivaling in extent and grandeur those of the cele- brated Luray Cavern were found. Half a mile un- der ground a stream of clear running water was discovered, Which, for purity and sweetness, is un- equalled vy any of the mountain springs. Stalac- Utes of every conceivable shape size were found seattered through the'various chambers and the explorers loosened some beautiful specimens and carried them to a room near the entrance.
