THE EVENING STAR: — WASHINGTON. D. C., WEDNESDAY, - JUNE 15. 1887—SUPPLEMENT. Baltimore Colored Men. AGITATING THE QUESTION OF SCHOOL TEACHERS OF 1k OWN RACK. ‘The Maryland Eu:ational Unton, composed mostly of colored ministers, held .a mecting in Baltimore yesterday afternoon. The American says: The committee/appotnted at the last meet- ing to ascertain whether John Wesley chapel ‘could be secured for the purpose of holding a mass g to advocate better schon! factiities for the race, reported that the matter was held under advisement. It was feared that this amounted to a negative answer. John Henry But Jer arose and Said that the colored tax-payers of Baltimore were entirely ignored in poiitteal a potntments, and that {fa colored man paid $1, annual taxes he could not get the privilege of Sweeping off the city hall steps. In Washington he saw colored men upon the police force, but in this city the colored man could not drive & public wer cart. Colored graduates were often to policy playing, a8 “necessity no law,” and women, too, were etimes compelled to write” policy slips. sbury Joyce took exception to the last ark, and said that no respectable colored aan played policy. He said there were mem- race Who Would dié before they would engage in any disgraceful acts. As colored teach- ers in other cities were found competent to teach colored children, he saw ao reason why they should not be pernitied to engage in the same calling here. Kev. Jas. T. Morris sald that unity of action Was What Was wanted. Dr. H. J. Brown also ad- dressed (he meeting, taking the opposite view. ‘The secretary then Fead a preamble and resolu- Hons which ad been drawn tp, denouncing cer- tain parties who had opposed the objects of their meetings. The resolutions occasioned considera- bie discussion, during Which the meeting became inharmontous. Dr. Brown delivered a stirring ad- dress. He spoke with emphasis for equality of Taces in the public selico: ‘The Church Party in Wexico Alarmed. AFRAID OF THE ABSORPTION OF THE COUNTRY BY ‘TRE UNITED STATES. ‘The church party in Mexico is complaining of the concessions granted to Americans by Presi- dent Diaz, upon the grounds that these conces sions will result in the absorption of Mexico by the United States. The Nacional, an organ of the church party, in an article in opposition to the Diaz policy, declares that each of these conces- sions is “a link more which tes us to that Pocifice- American conquest.” The article says: “American interests will make themseives the owners of great Manufacturing, mining, railway, and agricultural enterprises; Will acquire extensive territorial roperties; will exercise by their wealth decisive jufluence im the country, and the day will arrive, if things yo on as they are now, going, when they Wili coutrol the elections, will become deputies and ministers, and will decide who shall be presi- dent of the Tepublic. ‘The Catholic religion will then give place to Protestantism, to Judaism, to Mormonism, and to a thousand ridiculous sects Which extst’in the United States, and the English Janguage Will replace the Spanish. In that day | We shall no longer be Mexicans. We shall be slaves In our own land, and will occupy the | Wretched place which descendants of Mexicans now occupy in California, Texas, and New Mexico, Wuo have not asshnllated with’ the Yankee race: If foreigners ae needed, let Europeans be wel- comed, it Spaniards, Frenchmen, Engllsb and Ger- Beans Cou, but not Americans.” Rad for Mrs. Penseyres. UYSICIANS TESTIFVING THAT THE WOMAN'S INSANITY IS ALTOGETHER FEIGNED. In the Penseyres murder trial in Buffalo, yes- terday, Dr. Wm. H. Slacer swore that he exam- ined the Woman at the request of the district at- tomey soon after the shooting and found her to be | sane. All her diseases, he thought, were brought | ‘on Dy morphine taking. He said that the mother ‘was no more insane than her daughter, Mrs, Curtis, and that she was felgning. ‘Sue’ bas,” said the paysiclan, “during the tWo hours that I have been on the stand passed through every stage of insanity. fer crying and abuse of her attorney are feigned. I have never seen anything like this im all my expertence.” Dr. Hinkley, at the end of a long examination. said he believed the woman to besane. Dr. O'Brien took the op- osite view, and thought her troubles all dated From tie biti of ber Brst child. This kind of ine Sanity Was described at length. Dr. O'Brien had Deen out of the city and knew little of Mrs. Pen- seyres’ actions, In giving symptoms of such in- Sanity as he suspected he deseribed the conduct of the prisoner exactly. The defense closed with the Teading to the Jury of a large number of Mrs. Pensesres' letters. The summing up was to begin ‘this morning. ———— Strikers Cause a Riot, ‘TWO MEN BADLY BEATEN AT CLEVELAND. ‘The strike on the ore docks of the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad, at Cleveland, 0., culminated in a riot yesterday afternoon. About @ month ago the men who load ore into cars at the docks struck for $2 a day, an advance of 25 cents. Since then their places have been filled by colored from the South and foreigners brought to and fom Chicago. For a fortnight the lev ‘workmen have been given police protection, as the strikers, Who are Irish, have threatened to drive them out of town. Yestemlay aiternoon Geo. Vac- tor, a colored porter at the Central depot, took Superintendent o"Brien, of the New York, Penn. anta_aud Onto road, his dinner at the docks, Serikers who bad edngregated in large nite Ked him, and Enocking him to the beat him in 4 terrible manner, and would have killed hira had they not been driven away the police. At the same time John Mannion, liv- ing on Division street, started home to disner. He 1s unloading ore from vessels, and 1s nota striker nor a “scab.” He Was assaulted just the same, however, and had bis leg broken. The police called. fof assistance, ‘and putTol wagon | dashed to the scene and the Ofticers dispersed the | mov. The railroad company, seeing that they would have to act quickly t prevent a bloody | scene, loaded their imported colored men into a | train, and amidst a shower of bricks and ore, startéd away to the suburbs. John Joyce, one of ‘the men Who assaitited Vactor, has been arrested. soo ‘The Peak Verdict Approved. NEWLY DISCOVERED EVIDENCE CONTRADICTING THE | PRISONER'S ALIBI. Since the Jury rendered their verdict tn the Peak murder case at Mt. Holly, N. J., t has everywhere met with approval, and there 1s hardly a possi- Dility that a new trial will be asked for, particu- larly as additional evidenc has just been brought to light corroborating the verdict. Joseph Peak, | the defendant's father, told a resident of Mt Holly on the day after the shooting that Bart Was not at hoe on the night of tie murder, and tuat he did not know where he was. When The triai took piace Mr. Peak begged the inan not W violate the confidence he bad reposed in him, und to say nothing about tt.
