Killed on the Railroad. ‘THE DEATH OF PHILIP PRATT SUPPOSED TO BE THE KESULT OF ACCIDENT. About 4 o'clock yesterday morning the dead vody of a colored man was found on the rafiroad track, near Waterloo, about a mile from the Vir- ginta end of the Long bridge. It was identified as that of Philtp Pratt, who had been empioyed in the brickyardsin that section. THE GEORGIA PREACHER ADDKESSES TWO GATHERINGS IN THIS CITY. Rev, Sam Small, the Georgia revivalist, who has Decome famous by his work asan asw-fate of Rev. Sam Jones, preached twice in this city yesterday. In the afternoon at 4 o'cioek, by Invitation of the Y. M. C. A. he talked at the Congregational rch “to inn only,” though there were about a dozen of the other sex in the audience. The cuurch was crowded. Mr. Small, a tall gentleman of slender but well-proportioued figure, and a drooping moustache, Wearing a neat-fitting, long Prince Albert coat ahd a pair of spectacles, came pou the piatform promptly at 4 o'clock. He was escorted by the pastor of the church, Newman, who gave out the preifminary hymn< Mr. Smali’s talk was a strong plea for teimper- ance, based on the story of his own lite, which he described in a _ graphic interesting manner. He has a clear volce, which he mauages well, and speaks with great Muency, occasionally rising to eloquence. He told pathetic sides of the story of a debauched man’s ite, Ue sufferings of nis wife and children and the grief of his parents, with such power that a great majority of his audience, though composed Of men, occasionally found their eyes dimmed with tears, and after such a passage there was great snuffing and blowing of noses all over the jouse. He illustrated his potnts with laughable Stories drawn largely frou lis own experience, and Kept the close attention of his large audience during the hour and a half that he talked. Assaulted by a Villain in the Smith- sonian Grounds, SHR MAKES 4 DESPRRATE RESISTANCE, AND A SPECIAL OFFICER HEARING HER CRIES COMES TO HER 48- SISTANCE. Last night, about 10 o'clock, Miss Bertha Lov- ling was assaulted in the Smithsonian grounds by an unknown man who made his escape. Miss Lov- Ing ts about twenty-five or thirty years of age, and lives with the family of Mr, Rudolph Heasler, No. 1208 Maryland avenue southwest. She attended the meeting of the Central Union Mission, on Pennsylvania avenue, between 9th and 10th streets, last evening, and left there shortly before 10 o'clock to go home. She walked down 10th street, and had just entered the Smithsonian grounds when she was setzed by some one who ap- proached her from behind. Thinking it was one of her friends, who was on his way home from the mission, she asked: “Is that you, Charile?” The man made no reply, and looking around she dis- covered it was a stranger who had hold of her, and she attem) to break away. In doing so her was torn. She ‘screamed for assistance, and her cries were answered by Special OMcer'Cummartord, whose timely arrival no doubt prevented the from betng the victim of an out assault. HOW NETTIE CURTIS AND SANDY CARTER MET THEIR DEATHS. Saturday afternoon, as stated in Saturday's Star, three fishermen found the dead body of Nettle Curtis, a young colored woman, floating in the river off the foot of sth street, and later in the day it was re- moved to the morgue, where it, was viewed Dy the coroner. When the body was found foul play was suspected, and OMicer Block was detailed to inves- tigate the case. He learned that Friday night the deceased and @ friend, named Martha Merchant, made an en; it to meet Sandy Carter, a young colored man. ‘Sandy was not punctual and the girls met two other young men, Noke Syles and Chas. Coleman, with whom they w: to Jackson’s lumber wiart, at the foot of Sth street. ‘They Were sitting on a pile of lumber next to the river when Carter came along. He rattled one of, the boards, which frightened Nettle and she elther: fell or jumped into the river. Sandy ran tothe edge of the Wharf and seeing that Nettie had gone over- board jumped in after her. Presently those on the Wharf heard Nettie say “Let go.” ‘That was the Jast heard of them until Nettie’s body was found. Carter's hat has sinee been picked upin the river. The closing exercises of the Washington School of Elocution and English Language, Mrs. M. Stev- ens Hart, principal, were held at the Metropolitan ‘M. E. church Saturday evening. Sergeant Hughes had been in ill-health tor some | months, but, feeling much better, he left his house, On 6th street, between L and M, Saturday afternoon, for a short walk. Sergeant Hughes was a native of tis city, | born and raised in South Washington, and was forty-six years of age.
