HE IS ARRESTED IN THIS CITY BY REQUEST OF THR NORFOLK (VA.) AUTHORITIES. The police were recently notified by the Norfolk authorities to look out for and arrest the Rev. Willlam Ames, alias Haynes, alias Jobnson, col- ored, who is wanted there on a charge of bigamy. Yesterday afternoon Detectives Wheeler and Mat- Ungly called at house No, 637 South Carolina Yashington. ‘They were informed Uhat the Rev. Mr. Aues had gone out for a walk, and the officers Jett, intending to return during the evening. When they arrived at. the corner of Seventh and Pennsylvania avenue they met a col- ored man who answered the deseription of the per- son Wanted. The officers spoke to him and he at once admitted that he was the Rev. Ames. He ‘Was laformed by the officers that he was under ar- rest for bigamy and would be taken to Norfolk. He demanded that the officers produce thetr war- Fant, and wen informed that one Was not neces- sary’ he thought the officers were “bridging his Fight asa citizen.” The prisoner was escorted to the Police Headquarters Where he said his mother’s, name Was Ales, but people called him Johnson, and he goes by ‘two names; that he was about thirty-nine years old, and was a Baptist preacher. The ‘prisoner argued his case in this way: He married May Stevens on the Eastern Shore. She Was then bis lawful wife. Then he went to Nor- blk and married Hattle Emery. Being as bis first Wife was living the second marriage was illegal and the second woman was not his wife because he had no right to marry her. “He was then ar- rested and sent to the penitentiary. His being in prison gave the first wife a divoree and the second hot being his wife he was again a free man, and had the right to marry whom he pleased, and came to this elty and married Agnes Kidiey in Perry Carson's hotel.
