THE SOLDIERS ON PARADE. A Magnificent Military Pageant. SCENES IN CAMP WASHINGTON. Sunshine After the Storm—The Zouave Drill—Practice Drills Not to be Al- lowed — Additional staff Appoint- ments, &c. ——__. The sun shone pleasantly on Camp George Washington this morning, and seemed to be trying to make amends for the drenching the soldier boys got last night. The only evidences of the storm were the appearance here and there on tent poles of blankets or garments hung out todry. The qnarters of the Sth Rhode Island battalion pre? sented a very sorry appearance. This battalion arrived last evening and the storm struck them as they were marching up the avenue. Upon arriv- ing at camp they found their quarters, which are in a low part of the grounds, flooded, but they turned in and made the best of it. ‘This morning they were spreading out straw and blankets to dry, Early in the day preparations for the parade’ and review, the special order, be- gan. Officers put on their’ finest uniforms, ‘and Uhe men began to furbish up. At 10 o'clock drum calls began to rattle around camp, and squads were assembled, Everywhere could’ be seen bits of bright color." Soon the squads lengthened out into company iines, and the company lines grew into battalion nes. ‘Then the soldiers moved off to their appointed places of rendezvous, and Were soon aiterward marching away past the Fresidenv’s reviewing stand and through the city. ‘The camp was left nearly deserted for twoor three hours. The army of lemonade and ginger-cake vendors on the verge of the camp turned in in shady places and enjoyed a nap. A detail of sol- diers was left on guard duty. The Parade. The troops began forming at 11 o'clock on B Street north Executive avenue, and the roads that encirele Babcock Lake, The variety of colors made a pretty sight about the lake, The troops were formed rapidly and were ready to move Frompuly. at the hour named tn orders, 12 o'clock. ‘he procession was one of the prettiest and most. interesting ever seen on the avenue, the great variety of uniforms and the splendid marching of the crack companies helping to make a most at- tractive — spectacle. fhe Virginia brigade that headed the line marched like vet- erans, and received great applause, Al the head of the Virginia troops rode the Stuart Horse Guard, which arrived in camp last night, and was the only mounted body in the line. The battalions, made up of companies from different sections, attracted much attention on account of the diversity of uniforms. The Kentucky compa- nies, With their waving plumes, following the Vir- ginia troops, made a handsome appearance. Next came the Ohfo companies, who marched and looked well. ‘The District quota that followed was small, there being only one company of the Wasbington. {he Department of Justiee, and Mrs John Twee ‘THR CROWD ON THE STREETS. AS soon as the procession had passed the entire avenue was filled with the crowds who had been confined to the sidewalks, and asea of faces was upturned to the grand stand. As the Presidential party departed they found the White House grounds filled with people, mostly ladies, anxious to get a look af them. ‘The White House doors were closed after them, but the people crowded upon the portico and in areaway, and Were packed in like sardines in @ Dox. egaiot tad pasted, wo review having occupied on e review unirty-five minutes, ‘THE PRESIDENTS RECEPTION. The people who crowded about the White House entrance were anxious to attend the Presi- dent’s usual Wednesday afternoon reception. A squad of policemen kept the crowd in order for the half hour or more that they were compelled to wait. In the meantame preparations were made by Col, Wilson for disposing of the crowd at the reception. Tt was the crowd that has yet attended a President's public reception, When the Presi- dent was ready to receive then the people were admitted through the front door and passed in line through the East where they shook hands with the President, then out into the public Vestibule via the interior corridor, and made the exit through the western window on to the por Uco. The crowd kept coming long after the usual hour. and the President was kept busy shaking hands until 2:30 o'clock. AS soon as the procession was over a force of men began taking down the grand stand, which Was an unusually well-built structure. The Order of Procession. ‘The procession was formed in the following order: Maj. Gen. C. C. Augur. Staff:—Brig. Gen. Albert Ordway, Brig. Gen. Jase R. Carnahan, Brig. Gen. Johnstone Jones, Col.
