A Colored Man Dangereusly Wounded— ‘The Shooter Arrested. Last night about 9:30 o'clock a young colored man named Samuel McKeever, who lives in Snow's alley, between 24th and 25th, and M and N streets, ‘Was shot in the right side and dangerously injured by acompanton, named Samuel Jennings, Some- time ago Jennings gave McKeever a silk hat in ex- change for a pair of shoes, and last night he went to the latter’s house toget his silk hat back, and, 1t is said, he aiso wanted to keep the shoes. McKeever refused to give up the hat, and, in order to avoid any trouble with Jennings, he started to go out through the back gate of the premises, when, it 18 alieged, Jennings drew his revolver and ‘fired. Officers Keefe and Maddox heard the report, and going to McKeever’s yard found him prostrate from the effects of a wound in the side, and carried him Into the house and sent for Dr. Bishop. The physician probed for the ball, but failed to find it, and Was unable to tell exactly the extent of thé wounded man’s injurles. After the shooting Jen- nings started towards the river, as tf intending to go to Alexandria, but changing his mind he re- turned to Snow's alley, where “he was found se- creted in a house about 3 o’clock this morning. He adinitted the shooting, and said he had thrown tue revolver iato the river. When found in the house by Officer Rodgers he said he did_not_ mind being arrested, but did object to belug taken from bed So early’in the morning. ANOTHER CONVICTION IN THE POLICE COURT—JUDGE SNELL ON EVASIONS OF THE LAW. Christian Beuchler, who keeps a summer garden on the Bladensburg ‘road, was before the Police court to-day charged with violating the Sunday Uquor law. Mr. Tobriner appeared for the defen- dant, and entered a plea of “not guilty.” Officer Slack testified that Sunday afternoon, while passing the defendant’s place, he saw a num- ber of persons in the place drinking beer. ‘The defendant claimed that the German Pleas- ure Club, of which he was a member, met there, and he furnished them refreshments, for which he had not yet been paid. Counsel attempted to show that the club noti- | there Sunday afternoon, but the court thought | that was not material. Counsel argued that there had been no violation of the law proved against the defendant. ‘The judge said it ts very clear that this club business fs nothing but transparent attempts to evade the law. All they think is necessary 1s for aclub to organize and take in all the bar-room keepers in the city, and each week notify one of thein that the next ‘meeting will be held on their premises, and that they were to supply the refresh- ments, ‘Then the beer could be placed on tap, and they could proceed to business, All this might do, Dut it wouldn't do here. ‘Mr. Padgett said he would admit that there was a club, and he had no objection to it. They, how- ever, Rad no more rights than individuals, and when they attempted to hold Sunday meetings at ceused saloons he certainly claimed that the law was violated. ‘The court Imposed a fine of $11. Appeal noted. More About the County Roads. To the Editor of the EVENING STAR: I am gratified to see that you have given space im your paper of yesterday to the very just com- plaint of your correspondent as to the manage- ment of the county roads, and I destre to say that the Bladensburg road isnot the only one neglected while those in favored localities are kept in apple- pie order. The 7th street road isextremely rough, and the Broad Branch road, for a distance of two niles, is almost impassable during the winter months, and is but a rough narrow passway at all times through that section. It is a direct outiet tor Montgomery County to Washington, and it is, in many places, too narrow for two vehicles to pass, and yet the Commissioners will spend thou- sands of dollars in opening new roadways and | building expen ive bridges, witout establishing a necessary thoroughfare. Who will not say Dut that itis their duty to repair and make passable their roadways already in existence before making new ones? T atn in favor of all new improvements, Dut not at the expense of violating this well-es- tablished principle. I do not wish to be under- stood as being opposed to our present form of gov. erninent, but only desire to reach those charged with the adininistration of our affairs through the medinm of your paper.
