THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY. —_ Lad 1887. CHOSBY 8. Ni jOVES. ————_ ‘The Evening star has a rewular. permanent tena fide daily cireulation mere than trebie t of any other daily paper published tn Washington, and much greater tham that «call the other daily papers kere added together. TE STAR cannot undertake to preserve cr urn rejeeted communications. Contributors whowish [0 possess Ueir manuscripts, f wn usec, should keep a copy. 82 Matter of whatever character intended for publication must, ¥ ils appearanee the same day ts desired, reach the oflce not later than 12 52" No attention paid to Anonymous Letters or Communications on any subject. Another Ten-Page Star. The doudie-sheet Star of next Saturday, the 21st Inst., will be accompanied by a supplement, mak- ing that edition another mammoth ten-page issue Its etghty broad columns will afford ample space for all the demands of its advertising patrons, and leave sufficient room beside for more than the usual amount of reading matter, which will be generously furnished in the news of the day, upto the moment of going to press, and bright and fresh original and selected matter. By that date there will already be in the city a large number of strangers, drawn here by the great National Drill of the following week, so that Saturday's ‘Star will be sure of a wider and more thorough reading than ordinary, both in the city and out- side. S27 To advertisers this triple issue of TuR STAR will afford an opportunity for communicating ‘with the public which cannot be presented by any Journal, nor any three journals, in Washington. ‘Those having attractions of any kind to offer to customers should therefore avafl themselves of this rare chance to reach a wide and desirable cfrele, and in order to secure the best results, in display and arrangement of announcements, these should be sent inas early in the day as practicable, and before 12 o’elock m., if possible. Newsdeaiers, both im the city and at other points, and newsboys as well, are also requested to gend in their orders in advance for extra coptes of this extra-attractive edition, to avold any chance of disappointment in not getting an ade- quate supply. —- = —___ ‘The latest letter of the Interstate Commerce Commission 1s of importance as indicating the ‘Views of the Commission in reference to the much. These harmful resuits, however, must of course have been contemplated by Congress when it fixed the time at which the Jaw was to go into operation. Another, and perhaps better reason for the tem- porary Suspensions is suggested. If the new law had been left to operate universally the old state of things would have been swept away at once, and the Commission would have had no good op- portunity for careful study of the system to be re- formed; and would have been deprived of the best and most satisfactory means of making that com. | parison between the systems which was tmportant | not merely to enable it to pass finally with full | knowledge upen the exceptional cases, but also the better to prepare it to make in its periodical Teports such suggestions and recommendations as might naturally be looked for. ——— The refusal of the Toronto police to interfere efther for the protection or the assistance of sun- ary visiting strangers who were exposed to the mad fury of a mob in'the streets of that city yes. terday, may lead to something more disagreeable ‘than @ few newspaper comments. The reporters of American journals who accompanied Mr. O'Brien. ‘Were not with him for any revolutionary purpose. ‘They were there to do their duty to the public by ‘writing descriptions of what they saw and heard. ‘They were taking no part even in the bicodless agitation of the Irish nationalist cause, and thetr ‘Whole offense consisted in following the obnoxious orator from place to place and trying to preserve the peace. In such circumstances, they were en- titled to the hospitable treatment accorded other ‘Visitors who conduct themselves decently. A few such performances as yesterday's in Toronto will make the American policeman, whose faults we are occastonaily dis- posed to criticise with some harshness, show up Dandsomely by contrast with the Canadian officers, “What would non-Catholics wi on, think of ‘the Catholic Church it its ead om ec ing Irelana with amsrehs is | Ireland with anarchy | and devastation? It will be sad if the Irish protest against a policy which has left them Uttis else than thelr religion, shall lose them even that. However, @ movement wich devastates a land and leaves it a desert would naturally de- prive itof religion in the same proportion as it deprived it of inbabitants, and when entirely de- serted the land would be without religion.
