THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.c THE EVENIN NG STAR. | WASHINGTON THURSDAY April CROSRY s. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a reculnr. permanent bona fide daily circulationmore than treb! hat of any other daily paper published in Washington, and much grenter than that ef all the other daily papers here added together. The annoyance expressed by the President at the conduct of two or three of the newspaper represen- tatives who have been In the habit of attending his noon receptions, is not at all unnatural. The wonder 15, rather, that he has endured so long in silence the il! manners of which he and his guests have been made the victims. Liberties have been taken in the east room of the White House which Would not be tolerated, if indeed anyone wonld think of taking theto, in the drawing-room of a pri- Yate dwelling. Why the President and those who Pay their respects to him should be made targets for a running fire of witless and often insulting comment, delivered in so loud a tone that It could hardly fall to he overheard, does not appeat, But after all this is sald, it seems as if the President had made another of his hasty mistakes of generalization in visiting upon the Whole fraternity of reporters and correspond- ents the penalty invited by the sis of a few. He has a perfect right, if he chooses, to cut off at any time all the special privilegesenjayed by the representatives of the spress at the Whi House, whether those privileges have been abused oF not. It fs not always wise, however, to exercise ‘the most undentabie right. The President's sweep- ing censure of the newspapers, made in his letter to Mr. Keppler and in his Harvard College speech, were not calculated to win the kind feeling of those Journalists who had babitually treated him with ‘courtesy and consideration, and looked for a return to Kind at his hands; and yesterday's incident, ‘Which fs subject to the same criticism, 1s lable rather to increase than to lessen the impression made by its predecessors, ——— “The British government, understanding the action of the United States in denouncing the fishery articles of the treaty of Washington to be, ina great degree, the result of disappointment at detng called upon to pay £1,100,000 under the Halifax fisheries award, offers to revert to the old condition of affairs without pecuniary indemnity.” Report attributes the foregoing to Lord Salisbury ‘a8 an oMicial statement to the United States. Sec retary Bayard refuses either to confirm or deny the report. Sir John MacDonald says the terms mai Tr You Havrex In the vicinity of our building any time this ‘week ‘twill certainly interest you to look in our show windows. You will gain more informs- tion by fifteen minutes’ examination of the rious wares displayed therein than we could hope to convey in a wholecolumn of the Star. Our two large southern windows are devoted to the display—one of samples of Merchant Tailoring. and the other to Shirts, Underwear, Hosiery, Handkerchiefs, Scarfs, Ties, and the multiplicity of things to be found in our fur- nishing department. In another window are tobe found samples of Ready-made Trousers, the style and fit of which youcan form good idea from seeing them om the forms. Men's Clothing, ready for use, fills one of the large eastern windows, and Boys’ and Children's Clothing the other, and between these two comes our magnificent display of Shoes for Ladies, Misses, Boys and men. Boys' Head- gear fills the next window, and the northern Window is devoted to the display of Spring Styles of Men's Hate. ‘The price ticket on each article orgarment tells the story more forcibly than could any words of ours. There isu’t s man or boy who Teads this advertisement that isn't interested. directly or indirectly, in this, our grand display of Spsing Outfittings: for, never before in Washington—not even in our own house—were such stetling values offered in the various lines we kecp. Our marvelous business has reached that point where we are enabled to istribute the wares we sell at about whole- sale prices—or prices that retailers generally have to pay for their goods first cost. This is no idle boast of ours, for the credit is not ours alone. To the people's confidence and generous patronage we cheerfully and thankfully s¢- knowledge the credit is due. Whatever you may want for Spring Wear in Clothing, Hats, Shoes, and General Furnish- ings, yon are sure to find here in goods pos- of the proposition are not accurately stated in the Teport. Some such proposition is evidently the subject of negotiation between England and the United States, and Secretary Bayard, who suggests that the interests of San Francisco, Chicago, and the trade across our northern boundary exceed the interest of Massachusetts in the results of the appiieation of such an alternative as commerctal non-intercourse, hopes that a satisfactory under- standing will result. There is an unpleasant flavor to the whole publication. Lord Salisbury thinks that the United States is more worrted about pay- ing the old fisheries award than annoyed at the sessing the highest order of excellence, and ‘st prices that will surely please the most eco- nomically inclined. SAKS & COMPANY, GENERAL OUTFITTERS, Canadian outrages upon our fishermen, and that the national pocket-book and not its self-respect 4s to be protected; and Secretary Bayard Is hope- ful and complacent over negotiations proceeding, presumably, upon that basis. Perhaps it will be cheapest to ignore the practically unanimous voice of the national legislature, swallow the Can- adian insults, surrender the principle which bas been the subject of contention between the two governments, and recetve in return without ex- pense but with much condescension fishing privi- leges which the republic has steadily insisted are worth nothing over and above the corresponding privileges granted by us. Cheapness ls novalways the highest aim of a nation. ‘The Baltimore and Ohio railroad, encouraged, perhaps, by the dissatisfaction arising from the Pennsylvania road's increase in commutation Tates, proposes to work upan active suburban business In the vicinity of Philadelphia. The por- ton of the road between Wilmington and Phila- deiphia has been doubie-tracked, and sixteen dally trains each way are to be runon and after next Sunday. Is it because it has at present no shrewd and active competitor for the best part of Wash- Ington’s suburban travel that ft fails to show the same solicitude and the same prudent energy in Duilding up the suburban business in the vicinity bf this city? Every consideration necessary to sempt a road to foster Washington suburban growth would seem to exist. ‘There 1s now an ex- traordinary tendency in this city towards making homes in suburban towns. Property ts being purchased for town, sites in every firection from the city and on all the Toads. In the towns already platted lots sell readily, and many buildings are going up. Induce- ments in cheap raves, frequent trains, and the security of a double track will have much to do in deciding the direction which this overflow from the city will take, whether into Virginta or Mary- land, along this railroad or that. All of our rail- Toads should awake to the condition of affairs in this city. ‘The B. and ©. is wise to foster Phila- detphia suburban business by a double track and sixteen daily trains each way. It will be still wiser to recognize that there fs now an even more promising opening for such encouragement in the Vietnity of Washington. If it were not blind to thiscity’s suburban “boom,” it would not permit the work on the promised Metropolitan Branch double track to dawdle along at a rate Which will not complete it by the year 1900. = If the struggle had got to come between the sil- ‘Versmiths and their men, as one of the employers: Party yesterday stated in an interview in New York, perhaps the present ts as good “ss any time for tt; but ts it by any means certain that the sumggle was necessary? Could it not have been | Wolded by the exercise of a little forbearance and tact on both sides? And was there any better ex. | cuse fora combination between the employers to | force the men to their terms than fora combina- tion between the men to fore the employers to | theirs? It seems strange that the silversmiths’ lock-out ‘Should have begun just at the time when so many manufacturing firms and corporations are adopt- | ing the plan of profit-sharing with their employes, | Suppose that, instead of declaring war upon labor Organizations, right, left and center, the silver- Smiths had tried the plan of organiziug unions of their own in their workshops, giving to each con- ‘Tributor to the success of the concern a part of the Profits he has helped to create, would there have ‘Deen any need of a lock-out? Or, if both parties to the apprenticeship controversy had met in good temper and appointed arbitrators, would the threat of a general strike have been made? It Is worth noting that, accompanying the an- nouncement of a positive breach of relations be- ‘Tween employers and employed in this case, come) the news that the notorious “district assembly $9,” which has ruined more poor men in the last twelvemonth than all the ¢apicalist tyrants put together, was a conspicuous factor in the quarrel, It seems highly probable, therefore, that we shall ‘Witness another one of those disastrous contests out of Which no cae comes Whole except the cus todian of the relief fund and the well-paid walking | delegate. = Te seems as it it ought not to be necessary, at | wis late day, to correct a stupid error which | Sarted on its travels through the press nearly | Saree years ago, and which was the fruit of a reek- | Jess haste in reading plain Engilsh; yet im half the newspapers that discuss politics may still be found | references to Mr. Cleveland's declaration in his letter of acceptance, that he would not be a candi- date for a second term as President. As a matter of fact, Mr. Cleveland never made stch aeclara- Yon, and probably never thought of making it. ‘What he did say was that he was tm favor of a constitutional amendment providing for a single Presidential term of six years. As the constitu. ‘tion has not been so amended and as Mr. Ciewe- land was elected for only four years, there is no Teason for supposing that he would not take a nomination for another four years if his party offered tt to him. $< —____ Itisa significant announcement which ts made 4m a Paris despaten about the sale of the French crown jewels, that “orvers from America, espec- tally from the wives of United States Senators, indi- dicate the probable destination of the greater Part” of them. “The wives of United States Sen- ators!” as if United States senators were a class of inilijonatres by themselves, like railway kings and great bankers, und standard ot magnates, Next to ‘Wetr own nobiemen with enormous landed estates, Most of the Europeans evidentiy consider the nearest modern appoach to Cropsus, the United States Senator. It 1s scarcely a wholesome idea to Rave go abroad about us, and a still less whole- Some idea to allow to take deep root in the minds Of the people at home. ‘There may be a large measure of truth in Lord ‘Salisbury’s sneering comment on Mr. Gladstone's change of atuitude toward the Irish Six years; but that does not alter the Tact that the aged Liberal leader ts on the right ‘Side at last. This would be a hard world to live ip ‘Mnothing were subject to change, and the whole history of human progress is hung upon a series of discoveries by honest men that they have made mistakes themselves, question with | $9? No medicine introduced to the public has ever met with the success accorded to Hop Bitters. It stands to-day the best known curative articie in the world. Its marvelous renown is not due to the advertising it has received. It is famous by reason of its inherent Virtues. Itdoesall that is claimed for it. It is the ‘most powerful, speedy and effective agent known for the building up of debilitated systems. The following ‘witnesses are offered to prove this: WHAT IT DID FOR AN OLD LaDy. Cosuoctox Stati0x, N.¥., Dec. 28, 1884. Gents: A number of people had been using your Bitters here, and with marked effect. In fact, one case, a lady of over seventy years, bad been sick for years, and for the past ten years I have known her she has not been able to be around half the time. About sixmonths ago she got so feeble she was helpless. Her old remedies, or physicians, being of no avail; I sent to Deposit, forty miles, and got a bottle of Hop Bitters. It bad such a very beneficial effect on her that one bottle improved herso she was able to dress herself ‘and walk about the house. When she had taken the, second bottle she was able to take care of her owa room ‘and walk out to her neighbor's and has improved all ‘the time since. My wifeand children also have de- rived great benefit from their use. W. B. HATHAWAY, Agt.U. 8. Ex. Co, AN ENTHUSIASTIC ENDORSEMENT. Gorman, N, H., July 15, 1886. Gents: Whoever you are, I don’t know. but I thank the Lord and feel grateful to you to know that in this ‘world of adulterated medicines there is one compound that proves and does all it advertises to do, and more. Four years ago I had a slight shock of palsy, which ua Rerved me to such an extent that the least excitement would make me shake like the agua Last May I was induced to try Hop Bitters. I used one bottle, but did ‘not eee any change; another did so change my nerves ‘that they are now as steady as they ever were. It ised. to take both hands to write, but now my good right ‘band writes this. Now, if you continue to manufac ture as honest and good an article as you do, you will acoumulate an honest fortune and confer the greatest blessing on your fellow-men that wasever conferred on mankind.
