THE EVEN WASHINGTON: SATURDAY... _-ADFHL 16, 1897. | CROSBY Ss. NOYE ING STAR, bona fide daily circulation more of any other daily paper published in THE STAR cannot undertake to preserve oF return rejected communications, Contributors wiowish to possess their ‘manuscripts, f un- used, should keep a copy 62 Matter of whatever character intended for publicaiion must, if 4s appearance the same day ts desired, reach the ufice not later than 12 o'clock noon. $8 No attention paid to Anonymous Letters or Communications on any subject, Senator McPherson, of New Jersey, looks for- ward with some misgivings to the Presidential contest of 1888. He does not feel at all confident of the power of the democratic candidate to pull through witn a “regular labor candidate” in the Meld to divide his vote. The Senator evidently re- gards the breach between the democrats and the labor reformers as wider now than ft was thirty months ago, when the labor party had an irregular candidate to vote for. ‘The power of the workingmen, as a class, to make themselves an important factor In the next national contest dependson something else besides the candidate, however. A good man to vote for is @ highty desirabie element in the case; but & consideration infinitely more momentous 1s the principles represented by that man. The most attractive candidate, personally, who ever ran for office would not stand the ghost of a ehanee ff suspected of ¢ ning a fancy for any of the social heresies which are masquerading in the guise of labor agitation now-a-days. The democratie party may not hold the best part of the labor vote in 18SS—of th MePherson 15 as well qualified as any one to prophesy; but the best thing that could happen to it would be to "3 national convention cap- 3 s, the communists, the niht- Usts or the anarchists, and the ute named by them. The honest workingmen of the country, in a solid body, would turn their backs upon such and the party whicn came nearest to ther hand would receive ti sion, ss ‘The season for stealing fowers from the city parking and destroying the shrubbery has fairly opened. Tireless vigilance and a few arrests at this time will be especially effective in pun!shment and warning. Flower thieves are not such formid- able law-breakers as Pan Handle frieght robbers or Jamestown burglars, but they tend to rob the eity of the picturesque beauty in parking and reservations, Which 1s one of {ts principal attrac- tons; and their wasteful pliferings should be firmly checked at ¢ matter 1s one in which the entire Washington public should be interested. The instincts of good etttzenship and pride in the appearance of the city will cause the men and wo of Washington to give to the flowers and shrubbery of the public reservations and parkings the needed tion, Through the Schools the duties of good eltizenship in this respect should be impressed upon the children, as has been done, with good effect, in the past. Many of the pilfered lowers are offered for sale, and an easy Way to discourage such thefts would be for every- one, warned by the appearance of the sellers and the lowness of the price that the wares are stolen, to refuse to become the recetvers of stolen goods. If the dowers and shrubbery are properly pro- tected by the authorities and by public opinion and vigilance, the small parkings In front of the houses will be more generaliy cultivated and adorned, and the increase in the picturesque Deauty of the city will keep pace with its material growth, beneilt of their seces- $<» += Major Saunderson, conservative, cut 80 con- tempUble a figure, and was'so seve handled ®y ‘the Parnellites in the debat had accused them of knowin ating with amurderers, that it is hardly worth while to pay attention to his farther foolish @tatement that the National League 1s “supported mainly by erimi- nals, dynamiters, and murderers across the Atlan- Uc.” The protesting legislatures of the various American States, and ihe mass meetings of citl- gens all over the countr ‘Rare composed, according to Saunderson, of criminals, dynamtters and murderers, will probably agree that Healy’s and Sexton's deaunciatory epithet accurately de- scribed their accuser.
