WASHINGTON: THE EVENING. STAR. | Senos Recomzceers, ‘The Evening Stat has @ réguler. permanent bota ide dally citculntion tiers than trebie that of nhy other daily paper publisned th Washington, and mach greater than ef alt ether dally papers here added ‘The mugwump lion, George William Curtis, has ‘been bearded in his den, and made subservient to ‘the purposes of the interviewet of the Ctuctinati Pnquirer. The political opthions of the great mugwump are of some significance, both on ac- count of his personal ability and because he rairiy represents that body of voters to which Cleve- Jand’s election has been attributed, and which in its own opinion, at least, will drive an unwilling democracy to his renomination, Judging trom his outgivings the outlook for both the great par- ties 1s exeeedingly Cloudy. The chances, accord- ing to Mr. Curtis, would seem to be against the election of anybody likely to be ndmifated on either side, if only the positive merits of the noi- Anee were considered and disaffection towards the opposing nominee overlooked. If, however, any comfort can be defived from his views it will fall tothe republicans. ‘The mugwumps, he says, are still for Clevéland, and the democraey cannot afford to refuse to renominate him; but, if nomt- nated, he will betefeated by the opposition of the party leaders in New York city, Where the next election for President will be settled. Mr. ‘Curtis observes no presidential timber itt Hill, ‘Phurman, Byard, or McDonald, and thinks that ‘want of material will furnish another reason why ‘the democratic party will not care to ignore Cleve. land, who, he says, is not popular with his party, but ts better than his party and capable of elevat- ing it. “To elect a president, anyway the next one, ‘the successful party must carry New York. The democratic leaders in New York, ineltiding Tam- many Hall, are opposed to Cleveland, and I feel the consciousness that they Would slaughter him ag the polls.” Leaving the democratic party in ‘ais deplorable piight, Mr. Curtis turns his atten- tion to the republicans, and it then appears that the main diffieulty which that party will expe- fence in taking advantage of the rutnous course mapped out for the democrats consists in the fact that the leading candidates for the republican nomination are objectionable. Not over one-fifth of the mugwumps would support Sherman as against Cleveland. He is cold, lacks personality, ‘has made an adroit bid for the Southern vote, but has ignored “the reflective vote of New York State and its paramount importance to the election.” If nominated, “he would be amazed at the extent of the disaffection of the stalwarts” in New York, and his election would also be quietly opposed and defeated by the followers of Blaine. Concerning Blaine himself, whose pre- ‘vious nomination caused in part the mugwump revoit, on the ground that his “character did not meet the expectations” of the independents, Mr. Curtis fears that he will again be the republican nominee. “Blaine is the most popular leader of his party. ‘There is no doubt of that. He has about him all of the elements which attract men to each other.” Mr. Curtis does not predict Blaine’s defeat, if he is renominated, and if Cleve land should be his opponent evidently delieves that Blaine will be successful. The drift of the Prophecy, therefore, s in the direction of the nomination and election of Blaine, the nomina tion and defeat of Cleveland, and mugwump con- fusion and discomfiture. And {ts special signif cance arises from the faet that it comes trom a mugwump leader, a bitter opponent of Blaine, and & warm adiiirer of Cleveland. $$ Mr. T. B. Connery bas got as far as Vera Cruz on his way to his post as secretary of legation at the Mexicancapital. It is now time for the tempter with the loving-cup to appear on the scene. If it ‘were not for Mr. Connery’s distinguished reputa- tion as a temperance man It would be In order to warn him against that seductive compound of Aztec liquids whieh combines all the evil quall- ‘tes of sali and hoochino, and whose scent In air sets the wily newsgatherer on the track of t! diplomatic newcomer inexperienced tn the cus. toms of the country. — It Is gravely announced in the press dispatches from Baltimore that if President Garrett had been present at the meeting of B. and 0, directors yes. tertay, he would have been questioned “In regard to the rumored deal for a transfer of the control of the road.” A suspicious mind might jump to the conclusion that there wasa relation of cause and effect between the prospect of sueh ah inquiry ‘and the absence of the president, ——<$<$<— ‘Masonic Temple is not expected to hold the tm. mense crowd which will assemble this evening to Protest against the passage of the Irish coercion English partiament.
