THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. ' D. C.. NDAY, MARCH 14, 1887. THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: March 14, 1887. .- Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a regular. permanent boma fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and much greater than that ef all the other daily papers here added together. ‘The rather tnelezant but decidedly expressive Kentucky phrase “he bit off more than he could chaw” seems tobe pecullarty applicable to the points involved in the present much-talked-of Bal- timore and Ohio rafiroad “deal.” Between incon- siderately extending his railway lines, inaugurat- ing a palace car system of his own, buying trow- sers by the hundred pair, running an opposition ‘express company and building an extensive and tangled net of telegraph lines, young Mr. Garrett evidently dissevered more than he was abie to masticate. Realizing this truth finally, andrather than datly acknowledge the fact, he showed a ‘willingness to sell out all his holdings, except the ‘wowsers, and retire with a big fortune in money, if not with the laurels of a victor. Next on the seene appears a Mr. Sully, of New York, who, thinking he saw a good thing for himself if he could induce other people to temporarily put up ‘the money necessary for the “deal” or lend their credit for that purpose, undertook to form a syndi- cate by which to transfer Mr. Garrett's burden to the shoulders of the public, through the media of higher freight and passenger changes and watered stock galore. But when “time” was called, in Mr. Garrett's interest, Mr. Sully awoke to the fact that he tkewise had miscalculated the grinding power of his molars as compared with the range and Keenness of his incisors, and he too was reluc- tantly compelled to let go or take the chance of choking. Itis understood that a new combfnation of able and experienced manipulators have now under- taken the job given up,which proved to be too much for Mr. Sully, bet whether thelr powers of degiutition will prove tobe equal to the sizeof their mouth remains to be seen. A very useful moral may, however, be drawn from the case as it stands af present. a Mra Neebe's funeral at Chicago yesterday was not utilized for the purposes of a ““lemonstration” by the anarchists. This pacific tssue was proba- Diy intended as a snub to the sheriff who had, in Mew of the ominous preparations for the cere- mony, withdrawn his permission to the convict husband to attend. The sheriff was nevertheless right in the course he pursued. In dealing with men who acknowledge no law but their own im- pulses, it ts better to be too cautious than toocare- Jess. “If Neebe had been permitted to be present ‘at the burial of his wife and a riot had followed, ‘the sheriff's untimely tenderness would have been held accountable for whatever bloodshed and pil- lage occurred. ——————— ‘The “experiences of a government employe,” which the friends of the Y. M.C. A. in this city ‘were invited yesterday to hear, turned out tobe a discussion of an important episode In the career of Zaccheus, the tax-gatherer of scriptural fame. ‘This discovery doubtiess caused disappointment to some of the expectant host. And yet any one of them, if given his choice, would probably ex- change the experiences of a person engaged in the activities of political life for the shrewd and un- Itased observations of a “‘inan up a tree.” In the new “deal” in the B. & O. game the players conceal their hands as carefully as in the id. In the resulting condition of suspense anxt- ous Baltimore whistles to keep up iis courage, ‘The game is a new one to Baltimore and is styled in some quarters there: “The Option-Sale Muddle; or, a Raflroad in Search of a Head.” Senator Edmunds hopes and thinks that the re- pubifean party will show wisdom in the selection Of its standard bearer in ‘SS. Sherman, ditto, Blaine, ditto.
