Barnard’s Latest Comet. Prof. Barnard, of Vanderbilt University, writes to the Nashville Ameri can as follows under date of February 19: “Friday night being the first clear night since that of discovery, the new comet was again observed and found to be near its expected piace. Since discovery the comet hasbeen moving toward the northwest ata very unusual rate, 5 and 17 minutes north, and 14 minutes of ‘ascension west daily.” It continues very int, but was probably a little brighter last nignt. ts path since discovery has been obliquely across ‘the milky way, and its rapid motion continually ‘Drings it in front of some smail star, which in every case shines through the comets’s densest part ‘With undiminished lustre. The rough tion OF the comet last night was about 8 or 10 degrees northeast of Sirius (the Dog Star). Accurate ring micr meter positions of the comet were obtained inst night, ahd these were to-day distributed by telegrapn to the princtpal observatories. Theonly thing certainly known about the comet at present ts that it fs outside the earth’s orbit, and from its extraordinary motion is evidently near the earth. Within a few days, however, full information of its future brightness and path will be obtained. ‘There are now three comets visible from the earth that were discovered at the Vanderbilt observa- tory. The one discovered on the of Octo- Der 5 iast is now visible in the southern hemi- sphere; the one discovered om the morning of dan. 2¢ ts observable herein the and will de for some time yet, The present comet near Sirius ts likely to be visible for some time to come, and it is getting into better position ail the time.” — New York’s Loftiest Butldings. ‘What is declared to be the finest view in Gotham 4ssoon to be obtained from Cyrus W. Field's ‘twelve story “Washington building,” at Broad- way, Battery Place and Greenwich. This struct- ure has been rising, story on story, for a year past. ‘The middie tower looks like a balloon-shaped cage ‘with a person in it, but tt fs tobe merely an ob- servation tower. It will be ready in another month. The view isone that has already been heard of in Europe. A flagstatl, rising fifty feet above she top, runs through the tower, which itself Mitty feet above the root. The highest ol servation point will be 235 feet above the street. ‘The tower rises sixteen feet above that—and the Will be 301 feet above the sidewalk. The other towers will be used for cooking, and in the ‘summer the space ‘and the observatory will be covered with canvas ‘and dinners will be given there. The top of the flag-poie will be five feet higher than the highest Part of the Bartholdi statue. The top of the Spire-on Trinity church is 286 feet the ground: the tower on the Produce Exchange, ‘which really furnishes the best view in New York, 4s a little less, but probably quite a8 high as the ‘observation point in the Field tower. ore ‘sor. — A Great Secret Revealed. ‘From the 8t. Louis Spectator. Since Miss Eastlake made her first appearance in this country, in her soft clinging garments, swaying in harmony with every step of the wearer, producing a most graceful and pictur- esque effect, society has been on the qui rive to dis- cover the secret and gain, if possible, a tithe at least of the swish and sway and rythmetic movement ‘which seemed to make the garment worn by Helle instinct with life and motion, and part and parcel Of her individuality. ‘The secret has been discov— ered, and the reizning belles in Up-top circles in New York are waltzirg in Hele dresses, abd seem iuore captivating (han ever before.
