He an- Swered in the affirmative. Miller then walked to bis front gate, and a few minutes later heard what sounded like fhe report of a pistol shot. William Schoot, a printer, who was asleep in a | room adjoining Sparrow's, was awakened by the report and rushing in found Sparrow lying on the Hoor with a pistol at his side and blood streaming Irom his mouth. Miller was also soon at. the side of the wounded man, and a physictan was sent Jor. A BULLET IN THE LEFT DREAST. Dr. $.$. SOUR BREAD. ‘Sour bread is caused by poor yeast, or an excessive fermentation in the dough. Sour biscuits are caused by the use of an adulterated or impure baking powder, or from cream of tartar und soda, or soda and sour milk, improperly mixed. Such food 1s unwholesome, producing intestinal derangements, indigestion, etc. ‘The sour or alkaline taste attending the use of cheap, low-grade baking powders 4s due to the fact that such powders are not properly combined, and that the ingre- dients used in them are Impure, ‘The cream of tartar of the market used by their manufacturers 1s adulterated from five to twenty per cent. Their manufacturers do not know how much lime it contains, and hence are unable to mix it with the soda, in proper proportions, As high as 11.85 per cent of lime has been found by the chemists in some of these powders, due to these causes, The result is an imperfect ‘action, which renders the bread, biscuit or pastry heavy, sour and unpalatable, or a Tesiduum of me and alum, imparting a bitter taste to the food. Any baking powder that does this is unfit for use, ‘There can be no heavy or sour bread, biscuit or cake where a perfectly made pure baking powder, like the “Royal,” is used, In the use of the “Royal” no residuum ts left, and the loat raised by it 1s always sweet, light and wholesome, and noticeably free from the peculiar tastes complained of. ‘This is because it 1s composed of noth- ing but absolutely pure materials sclentifically combined in exactly the proper pro- Portions of acid and alkali to act upon and destroy each other while producing the largest amount of leavening gas, The government chemists, after thorough and exhaus- tive tests, recommended the “Royal” for government use because of its superiority over all others in purity, strength and wholesomeness, There is no danger of sour or bitter bread or biscuit where the Royal Baking Powder alone 1s used.
