There is war between Coroner Levy and Coroner Messemer over this mquest, be- cause it was Nessemer's Week at the morgue when Levy examined Boble’s body there, and thus got hoid of the case. Yesterday Messemer occup! the inquest room in the coroner's oftice, and Levy had to hoid the Inquest in part I. of the general sessions, Inspector Bytes read’ Unger's confes- ston, and then Mr. Howe, the latter's counsel, said that no effort would be made to deny that Unger had Killed Bohle, but he would prove that he had killed him in’ self-defense. DECEIVED ISTO UNLAWFUL MARRIAGE BY A CON- NECTICUT MAN. ‘Miss Elizabeth Goltra, of Basking Ridge, Somer- set county, N. J., is the victim of a cruel and base deception. The matter became known Monday when her brothers-in-law—one of whom, a Mr. Bromfield, resides in Basking Ridge and the other in New York city—went before Chief of Police ‘Tuite, at Newark, and asked the assistance of the police in arresting a man named Burke, who rep- resented himseif as living in New Haven and as being employed by the Phoenix Manufacturing Tegeems that Miss Goitra, wh possesses consid- “Tee > who possesses con: erable property in her Town name, has always lived with her widowed mother and brother-in-law: in Basking Ridge, where she -occupled «igh social position. ne became acquainted ubout eight months ago with this Burke, and belag a bright, intelligent fellow, good looking and well supplied with money, he’ proved fascinating and frequently visited hi Atthe end of a month's time he proposed marstage Bromfield became suspiciot Haven for information concerning him. A pre- tended “prominent citizen” wrote in reply and de~ seribed Burke as being a very worthy man and owning large investments in the Phenix com. pany. ‘This citizen now cannot be found. Burk Was an atuent wooer, and five weeks ago be mar- ned Miss Goltra in Jérsey City, although the bride desired to be wedded at her home. He persuaded her to accede on the ground that her invalid mother would probably grow, excited, and 90 iin- pair her heaith should they be w at home, So the trusting girl was won over, and with Burke Went through a ceremony in Jersey City, which now Is thought to have been performed by a con- federate. ‘The coupie started on a wedding trip, with Chicago as their destination, according to Burke's program, but stopped in Newark for a Week with Miss Goltra’s married sister. In the meantime Mr. Bromfleld had discovered that a check for $10 which Burke had given him on a New York bank was worthless, and tracing this ciew he learned that the representation of Burke's | position in New Haven was utterly false, and that je Was already a inarried man, with a'wife and child in New “Haven in destitiite cireumstances. SPLIT IN THE COMMITTEE OF DR. M'GLYNN’S OLD PARISHIONERS. From the New York Times, To-day. The sensation in St. Stephen’s parish yesterday was the announcement that there is a spilt in the committee which has charge of the subscription to the McGlynn fund. One party, headed by Mich ael Martin and William J. McAuliffe, the secretary, re in favor of acqulescing in the pastorate of ather Colton and 01 rescinding those portions 0 address and resolutions adopted by the com ee Which oppose U ment of money towara the support of the church and recommend the members of the congregation “to keep their money in their pockets.” Mr. Martin said last evening: “I sympathize with Dr. MeGlynn as much as ever, but I do not think that, as good Catholics, we ought to boycott St. Stephen’s church. ‘The archbishop has yielded to our wishes in regard to Father Donnelly, and has put another priest over the parish, one with Whom we are acquainted and who proved himself tobe fully qualified for the place when he was assistant pastor under Dr, McGiynn. Father Col- ton deserves our support, and it ought not go. be Withheld, But, while acquiescing in the rship of Father Colton, 1 am heartily in favor of the McGlynn fund. I'want to have the contributions in his ald so large that as soon as he ts well enough he can go to Kome and present his case in the full- est and most complete inanner.” The champion of the other partof the com- mittee, Which still adheres to the original pro- gram, und advocates the refusal of all pecuniary Support of St. Stephen's until the reinstatement of Dr. McGlynn, 1s Miss Sarah J. J. McCaffery, Yet Miss McCaffery says that Dr. McGlynn must goto Rome, and declares emphatically that she will not follow him out of the Roman Catholic church, whither he must go if he disobeys the papal Summons. So the difference between the Uwo factions ts small after all, and the split prac Ucally puts an end to the possibility of any effect- ual resistance to the new adininistration of the arish. Si Dr. Shrady said last evening that Dr. McGlynn Was still nearly prostrated and unable to do any ‘work upon his statement in reply to Archbishop Corrigan, Dr. Shrady also says that Dr. McGlynn has come to no decision as to whether ‘he will go to Rome or not. ‘The truth 1s that the house on east 105th street, where Dr. McGlynn stays, 18_the scene of a daily battle. Henry George is exerting all his influence to have him defy Rome and become a co-worker with himseif, Other gentlemen, Protestants as well as Catholics, who have long” been friends of Dr. McGlynn, believe that while the course Which ‘Henry George urges would be very advantageous for that gentleman it would be ruinous to Dr. M Glynn. ‘They argue to him that the Rev. Dr. Mi Giynn, the eminent Catholic clergyman, is a power, but that Edward McGlynn, the untrocked priest, would be of littie account ahd of little in- Huence with the very people who have hitherto loved and respected him and regarded him as an oracle. Among those who have had conveyed to Dr. McGlynn within a few days their earnest hope that he will goto Rome and present his case as soon as his health will permit 1s Father Ducey, the rector of St. Leo’s, ee Shylecks in Boston. MAYOR O'BRIEN ENDEAVORING TO BRING ABOUT A ‘REFORM. Mayor O’Brien, of Boston, has forwarded a com- munication to the board of aldermen of that city calling attention to an evil that has assumed huge proportions in and about the City Hall. This is the assignment of wages by employes of the city to cer- tain money-lenders, either to secure loans at an exorbitant interest, or to evade the payment of just debts. In thfs connection the inayor pre- sented some startling facts and figures, He said. “T have In my possession a list of the men whose wages are naw assigned in the different depart- ments, and much tomy surprise the ate number is 230. I am assured by the treasurer that this “is a small number compara- tively; that sometiines in years past. it has reached tnuch — higher “figures. ‘The cee cole De aes under their assignments aggreg: 244 monthly, or a yeurly total of $151,000. In no case is. the rate of interest charged less than 5 per cent a ‘month, and in some cases ft amounts to 120 per cent per year.” The mayor asks for the adoption ofsuch measures as will imake the assignment of wages to prevent ‘the collection of debts a cause for disinissal from the service of the city, a rule now in force In the fire department. ‘The’ legisla- ture will also be asked to adopt such legistation a8 ‘Will check or put a stop to the evil. oe Alderman G. 8.
