It bas, moreover, reached into quarters where the atmosphere was supposed to be most serene. The enemies of the General Mas- ‘ter Workman were loud in their complaints, after tae Richmond general assembly, that the Home Club and he were in league against the rest of the order. There seem to be reasons for believing, however, that the next organized revolt will be ‘headed by the Home Clu. The ostensible cause of dissatisfaction 1s the increase in Mr. Powderly’s salary, which fs said to be unconstitutional. But ‘What seems strange about this fs the fact that the discovery of the unconstitutionality of the increase ‘was not made till months after the adjournment at Richmond, and not, indeed, till the General Master Workinan had lad a chance to make him- self obnoxious to certain professional agita ors and demagogues by interfering with their plans im two oF three instances. It 1s now declared that the Knights who support Mr. Powderly must choose between his leadership and the secession of @ large part of the order. The loyal Knights will have their good sense and their courage put ‘to the test by the way they treat such threats. It ‘would be the best thing that ever happened to the society to have the communists and anarchists forced out of it. They have no right to claim a foremost place in its management, It was not organized for their benefit, or for the propagation of the ideas they represent. Itsavowed purpose— that which has made the best converts to 1t—is the Improvement of the condition of the working peo- ple by fairand honorable means, and not by break- Ing faith with employers or Killing policemen, or SAKS & COMPANY. Mr, ‘Powderly has been tried and foun.igenerally faith- fal to his duty as a citizen and a patriot, and that duty takes precedence of any pretended obliga- ‘tion whereby his erities hope to make him an apostle of the social gospel of fire, sword and Tapine. ——— ‘The latest despatches from Europe put a curious face on the developments of continental diplo- macy. M. Blowitz, whoon more than one occa- sion hasshown his intimate acquaintance with the secrets of royalty, asserts positively that Germany and Russia have entered into an alliance whereby Germany is to remain neutral in case ‘Russia engages in war with Austria, and Russia is ‘to remain neutral in case Germany and France come to blows. Since Austria would not dare go imto any extensive foreign war without Germany's support, and France depends upon Russia to see her through her next contest with Germany, this looks fike a very effective combination for keeping Europe quiet for the present. Be it observed, however, that the compact does not in anywise restrain the contracting powers from carrying on private schemes of aggression if they see fit, They can even go bunting in couples if they feel like 1t. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall inherit the earth. $< —__ Inone way and another a good deal of the inner Mhstory of the presidential campaign of 1884 1s. leaking out. The latest instalment is the state Ment by the New York Sun of to-day that some ‘me before the republican national convention of ‘that year Mr. Blaine wrote to Gen, Sherman stat- 4ng that he did not himself desire tobe a candidate Yor the presidency, and offering the nomination to ‘the general and his active support in the canvass. On the same authority it is stated that Gen. Sherman replied, declaring In the most positive ‘terms, “not only that he would not take the nom! Ration, but that he would not consent to be elect- ea, and that if he should be elected against his ‘will, he would refuse to serve.” ‘Whether or not a correspondence of this precise shape passed between Blaine and Sherman it is ‘well known that the general has on more than one cecasion expressed himself on his proposed candi- acy for the presidency in very much such terms a8 those attributed to him here.
