4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C., SATURDAY, SANUARY 1, 1887—DOUBLE § 4 lA THE EVEN WAS G STAR. HINGTON: In order that Its readers and friends may under- stand that Tue Stan is fully keeping pace with ‘the growth of the National Capital, the following faithful transcript from the books af this office ts Published, showing the number of new advertise- ments printed in {ts columns for the two years last past. It will be observed that there has been a very handsome advance tn each month of 1886 over the figures of the corresponding month in 1885, and a total increase for the last year over us predecessor of 4,411, in a grand total of 910, ig 1885. 2,783 2,824 1886. 3,200 3,064 3,806 4,355 4,197 3,935 3,233 2,882 4,208 4,879 4,250 2,896 ‘Total....... 45,910 ‘Total Increase... 4Ail ‘These figures illustrate in a gratifying and most convincing manner the steady increase of business tu the city, since Tax Stax is everywhere recog- nized asthe faithful mirror which reftects Its material interests, as well as thelr jealous guar- | ian. But no less clearly and foreibiy ts the city’s growth in population followed, as shown by the appended table, giving the average daily ctrew- lation of the paper, by monthly divisions of tme, during the two years last past: 1885. Jaxvary. 21,701 23,651 24,657 Ducemagn... 265,173 284,183 Total Average. . 22,123 23,682 Increase... 1,559 It will be perceived from tls comparative table that there has been a marked Increase in clreula- Uon In each montis of 1886 over that of the cor- responding month in 1885, The smallest increase shown fs in the month of March. But that there should have been any increase at all in that month isa matter for surprise as well as gratif- cation. In March, 1885, it will be remembered, President Cleveland was inaugurated,—an ocea- sion which brought many thousands of strangers to the city and forced tie street sales of all the @aily papers up to an abuormal point for nearly a ‘week,—Tug Srar’s circulation reaching one day 68,310, and another a triffe less than 37,000. Yet, 4m spite of these extraordinary special demands for papers, Tux Sraa’s aggregate cfrculation im ‘That month was surpassed by that of March, 1886! Nothing could better demonstrate the steady ‘growth of the paper and its hold upon pubile con- fidence than this comparison. Of this average daily circulation of 23,682 | copies, the books of the office show that" an aver- age of 22,000 copies were circulated each day ‘within the city limits, by carriers, newsboys and counter sales at the oftice. Estimating the popu- lation of Washington at the present time at some- | thing over 200,000, this provides one copy of Tas ‘Stan for about every ninth person in the city, of ‘Whatever color, creed, nationality, or eircum- stancesof life. 2" No other newspaper in the world has so full @ circulation as this in the city in which it is printed!’ Taking the usual allowance of five Yeaders for each copy of a paper sold, (and in the case of a recognized family newspaper, like this, ‘the allowance should be considerably larger) and it may safely be assumed that Tue Star Is read ‘Dy about every person in Washington who 1s able toread. It follows, therefore, that It 1s the cheapest and best advertising medium within its eld to be found any where in this or any other country. —__$—— + —___ ‘The year which closed yesterday has been by no means free from disagreeable incidents, but on the Can.
