—— Zt THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C., MONDAY, é CEMBER 27, 1886—WITH SUPPLEMENT. THE - EVEN ING STAR. WASHINGTON: SIONDAY.... December 27, 1886. CROSBY s. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent beua fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other dally paper published in THE STAR cannot undertake to preserve or return rejected communicationz. Contributors who wish to possess their manuscripts, f un- used, should keep a copy. Ho attention paid to Anonymous Letters. General Logan will be remembered, before all things else, for bis qualities asa Nghter. He got nothing either fn war or In politics with ease. All his honors were the fruit of hard work. His repu- tation in military life was founded on the fleld of ‘Bull Run, where he fought in the ranksas a private soldier in the costume in which he had been dining ‘the evening before with a Union oMicer of his ac- quaintance. His Brigadicr-Generat’s straps were ‘won at Fort Donelson and Belmont, and his record Yor reckless bravery at Vicksburg and Atlanta Jus- Ufled his promotion to the Major Generals office. In the House of Representatives he was alwaysin is element when the fighting was hottest. He supported Thaddeus Stevens’ radical reconstruc- Uuon policy, and was 2 manager of the impeach- ment trial of President Johnson. He was one of ‘the first of the noted men of the west to join the Popular movement in that section In favor of the inflation of the paper currency and one of the last togive up the struggle. His contests for place in ‘the Senate have been among the fiercest in modern history. He never hesitated to announce bim- self @ candidate and to take a hand per- sonally in the work of his own canvass. Such conduct tn a pubic man always means one thing—the marshaling against him of the bitterest hostility the opposition has to offer, ‘Logan never finched from such warfare. He In- ‘Vited It and gloried in it. Defeat did not un- serve him, victory did not turn ls pride to ar. Fogance. At the end of his last hard battle for the senatorship, when the scale was finally tumed Dy one vote it was the universal comment of those who saw him when brought into the legislative chamber to make his speech of thanks, that he Was the coolest man in the entire assembiage. The presidential campaigns of 1880 and 1884 ‘tested his mettie well. In the one case he had kept his own name out of the convention in spite of the persistent urging of his friends, in order ‘that he might devote himself unselfishly to the in- terest of Gen. Grant, only to see the nomination Borne away by a man Whose name was not even mentioned in the opening ballot; yet he was the ‘first of the stalwart leaders to take the stump for ‘Garfield, and his ardor was not dampened by dis- appointment. In the other tstance, although ‘himself a candidate, with a resolute backing in convention, he turned over his support to Blaine, and made the fight bis own during the four months that followed. It was Gen. Grant who de- serfbed the most noteworthy phase of his charac- ter with the poradox: “Logan is never at peace except in war.” But there ts another point of view which no can- did commentator can negiect in studying General ‘Logan. A man who never hesitated to face any foeman needs must have kept his armor always in repair. Akin to his sturdy fighting qualities was a characteristic not less admired and respected by Ais fellow countrymen, and that was his unassatla- ‘Die honesty. Errors he doubtless made in judg- ment: economic heresies he espoused; unprogres- ‘sive measures he supported; violence in retort he Invited by violence of attack; but from first to last, in a career entending over thirty-five years of pubile service, there was not a seam in his harness anywhere through which his most vindictive enemy could thrust an accusation of dishonor. Opportunities must have come to him, over and over again, where the yielding of a point of princi- ple would have won him profit, but he died yester- ay @ poor man—the daily associate of miflion- aires, yet saving by frugality and thrift, a part of ‘his yearly stipend of a few thousand dollars to pay Jor the modest root over his head. Let the close analysts of human motives and methods say what they may of John A. Logan asa ‘politician and a statesman, they cannot deny him the tribute which Americans as a nation are always ready to pay to the sincere patriot, the ‘rave soldier and the public man whose hands and ‘Whose purse are not afraid of the daylight. Tue Stax quite agrees with the Sunday Herald ‘that a new gas company will by no means msure | ‘this community against the evils it now suffers at ‘the hands of the present greedy monopoly. Tar ‘Staz Knows very well that the proposed Temedy is am exceedingly risky one, since there is always a strong tendency on the part of competing corpo. rations to combine their forces, and grind the public to a finer powder than ever between the upper and nether millstones thus brought together; ‘Dut really there seems to be no other chance, a ‘things go, to get a decent article of gas in Wash- ington. Congress has the power, as every one | knows, to afford relief, and 1t ought to see that it Safforted, even if it’ be necessary to that end to amend or revoke the charter of the existing con- cern,—as ft doubtless has the right to do; but for Some occult reason, while appearing to be active, ‘that body does nothing. A new company was only suggested by Tue Stan as a last possible means of escape, and what it aimed toemphasize tm that connection was the fact that the objections tothe establishment of another company here are nothing like so serious as they are represented to be. If the Herald knows and will propose a better plan to secure the end in view, Tax SraR will cheerfully second ft. What Is wanted is better gas. If cannot be had by one agency, let us get ft Dy another. If the fable is remembered aright, the building of a fire on the tortoise’s back finally per- suaded that dilatory creature to more. ————— ‘The movement In New York state in favor of re- form in the method of capital punishment issaid ‘to point toward the substitution of electricity for the rope. This would be, unquestionably, a change for the better, and its adoption in the foremost state of the Union would pretty cer. ‘tainly result in a like change in most of the other states. Agreatoutcry has been raised against ‘the Whipping-post, a3 a brutal meansof punish. ‘ment; yet it is by no means more brutal than the gallows. One of the worst features of both methods isthe necessity for their administration by the hands of men hired for the purpose, human Dutehery being deemed the most. egrading of mercenary occupations. The surroundings of the execution of a sentence In both cases are revolt- Img. By the substitution of an electric hair, some of the worst of these evils would be got rid et. There would be no visible paraphernalia of Violent death. The convict would simply be seated in bis place and the pressure of a button ‘Would send him tnto enternity without 4 struggle. ‘The messenger would come and go unseen. ‘There ‘would be nothing to feed the curiosity of a rabble @r Ml a newspaper page with ghastly details, ‘There would be no broken Topes, no unsteady Platforms, no nervous deputies, no misplaced knots to guant against. Tho whole affair could be conducted with absolute decorum, dig- uity and precision. The judicial fling ta eriminal would cease to be a drama for th> gal- Jery-gods, but become the solemn mystery it @ught tw be for everyone. ———— It is a singular cotncidence that both the cand dates lor vice. President in IS84 are dead and both candidates for President suffering from the same Indisposition. Strangely enough, too, in the cases: @f Messrs. Hendricks and Logan, the pall of mourn- tng has fallen upon holiday festivities in their re spective homes. The insatiate archer has never, perhaps, in the history of our countrs, chosen a Imany Ulustrious marks within a lke Period, as Mince the present federal administration came into Being. The time seems not far distant when the face of public affairs will be no longer recognizabie ‘Wan old generatinn. Christmas, ike 9 great many of our superb styles of Men’s and Boys’ Clothing, has come and gone. To carry the simile still further, like ‘Christmas our handsome garments have brought Joy to hundreds of homes here in Washington; but UNLIKE Christmas, we can duplicate those styles many times over in one season. ‘This is just what we have done until now.
