¢ PA THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY. DECEMBER 16, 1886—WITH SUPPLEMENT THE hd aal Ded STAR. | Dssarrorsren Porte: ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona Sde daily circulation more than treble that ef any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here added together. ‘THE STAR cunnot undertake to preserve or Peturn rejected communications. Contributors who wish t possess thei manuscripts, f un- used, should keep a copy. EB No attention paid i» Anomymous Letters. THE ‘STAR desires at ail tomes to receive reliable in- feitigence of what is trancpiring in theeily and neigh- Dorhood, socially wend otherwise; Dut Wose who volume tarily send ixjormation should tm all cases forward it promptly, and accompany it with Ueir proper name and addrens,—which will of course be treatet eompdent- tally. This precaution is necessary, asan evinence of (00d farith on the part of the writer, and in order to avotd erporition. It should be understood, furthermore, that Uf matter sent to a newspaper is not worth sntixactory evidence of authenticity on the part of the writer it is not worth printing. ——$—$<—<——+ —____ It ts well that Mr. Leitch took the precaution to have his statement to the Senate District sub-com- mitvee in defence of the Georgetown Gaslight com- any reduced to writing. If he had delivered himself orally, without manuscript, the reporters ‘would baye been blamed for misquoting bim. No one would have been willing to believe that a Practical man of affairs could make such @ pre- sentation of business principles im public. ‘The Georgetown Gaslight company, argues Mr. Leitch, im substance, cannot lower its rates because its plant cost twenty-three thousand doilars in excess Gf ite capital and it is now paying only semi- annual dividends of fve per centum on its stock! Suppose a green-grocer were to charge two dollars & Darrel for apples while other people in the same trade were charging one dollar, and to take refuge Debind the piea that the stock’ of apples he had laid in was more than he could pay for, and his in- come from apple sales was ouly two thousand dollars a year: how many of iis customers would he retain by this argument? Not one. The few ‘Who took enough interest in him to even talk over his affairs would advise him not to make himself Fidiculous, but to remember that the rule of all ‘trade is, “Nothing venture, nothing have,” and to cut down his income to one thousand dollars if necessary to bring his prices within reach of bis competitors. The Georgetown Gaslight company, unfortunately for the public, is subjected to no competition tn its own field. Asa corporation, its shareholders are relieved of the perils of personal Hability which embarrass ordinary traders. Sem!- annual dividends of five per centum are very large dividends indeed in these days. It would only bring tnem down to the common level of stock earnings to cut them in two. —$<$<—<$— oe —__ Inthe “Black Wednesday” which Wall street ‘witnessed yesterday, it was merely the inevitable that happened. Of course, amid the excitement that prevailed, the really good stocks suffered av ‘well as the worthless and doubiful ones. New ‘England's drop had started the movement down- ‘ward on theday before, and every one of the non- dividend-payers felt the effect. Some of them, however, which stand on a pretty firm basis owing to the conservative management of the Properties they represent and a steady growth of business, suffered less than the proverbial foot- Dalls of the exchange. ‘The situation in Wall street had been decidedly ‘strained for some weeks. The profitable stocks having been pushed by the public up to the high- est practicable point, the bull speculators took hold of a hatt-dozen cheap affairs and began to hoist them without reference to their inherent ‘worth. Every person who bought these stocks did so with his eyes open. He knew that he was making an Investment, not for income, but for Speculation pure and simple. He had no right to complain when the first alarm about one of the Stocks sent the whole lot down with a rush. The trouble with such things 1s, however, that the disaster is not confined to the men who ‘Drought it upon themselves, but for atime causes annoyance or loss to everybody. Stock specula- ‘tors and brokers are ready to rush pell-mell into any movement, whether to boom or to depress the market. Thetr heads once turned in a cer- tata direction, they lose all sober sense and trample on each other in their haste to get to the front. Yesterday they did not pause to consider ‘Whether the granger roads, or the Vanderbilts’, or ‘the Gouid system were doing a good business and making money, but thetronly thought was to sell, | sell, sell! A calm survey of the fleld shows that yesterday's ‘Dackset in Wall street is not traceable to any decline in business at large. All legitimate trade holds up to as good a point as ever. The specula- tive collapse may result ina few failures among ‘Drokers and the discovery of the peculations of two or three over-ambitious cashiers; but, be- Yond that, nothing serious is to be apprehended. ‘The prosperity of the country is on too firma footing this ume to be convulsed by a mid-day Burry in stocks. —__——.-=__ ‘Tuesday's debate in the Senate on the railway Occupancy of Washington shows that the members | ft that body are not ignorant of the extent to! eaee tan seopiet this city are held in bondage | by incorporated monopolies. That isa Teassurance,—in the nature of evidence; Dut it was not needed. At least not in that form. ‘The fact has been demonstrated long since, and many a time, 90 far as talk ts concerned. What is needed | 1s action. Let Congress do something for the relief of the national capital, which fs its ward, as well asthe home of more than two hundred thousand People who have absolutely no hope of a change except through the will of that body. ‘The fact ‘That Congress has been cognizant of these abuses for many Years without the disposition or ability Yocorrect thei is anything but creditable to its membership. it forces upon the country the con- €luston that steam and horse raflroads, telegraph and gas companies, and the like, are more powerful than the chosen representatives of the people. Are the latter willing longer to rest under this una- ‘Vaidable inference? —__<——- —_ Ex-Alderman McQuade ts said to have been the aly person present at his trial yesterday who ‘Was not unmoved vy the verdict against him. Perhaps he bas ap idea that he can “fix” the Court of review as some of his friends boasted he Would “fix" the jury. Those justices will be a ‘anget for thousands of eyes between now and the @ecision of his appeal. $$ Mr. Thomas B. Connery, for many years Wash- Angton correspondent and afterwards managing @ditor of the New York Herald, is quite influeati- ily urged for the Turkish mission. The ability to Fun a great metropolitan paper successfully would seem to be fully equal to the requirements of a Giplomatic position of this sort. ———— ‘The death of Yale’s famous “half back” from type-malarial fever, the result of a cold caught @uring @ recent match with Princeton coilege, Suows that there are other fatalities to be braved in playing football besides being kicked or trampled to a jelty. * ————. -=—__ Mr. Tennyson's latest poem has brought him Maore money, It 1s said, than any of its predecessors of equal length.
