Di wer ee THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D. C., FRIDAY, NOV, ae. Still Parsaing Moen. “Doc” WILSON SEEKING TO SECURE HIS FORMER BENEFACTOR'S ARREST FOR PEK- gery. A telegram to the New York Herald from Bos- ton, November 24, says: “Doe” Wilson threat- ened, when the infamous Wilson-Moen trial ended with a verdict for the defendant, that he Would follow Mr. Moen even beyond the grave. He 1s making good his threat. Wilson's latest move is said to be an effort to secure Brest on acharge ot perjury. “Doe’ Boston from Providence this morning, and, ac- companied by his counsel, D. O'Loughlin, of this city, went before the ‘clerk of the United States court and filed a bill of exceptions in sup- port of the petition asking that the late verdict may be set aside. It is a long document and re- of the testimony given at the trial, hat in which reference is made to Dility to write. The threatening let- to have been written by Wilson on is Introduced In fall. As an nis Wilson's testimony to the effect t he could not write at that time is given, her antithesis is Moe's statement that Wilson said he witnessed an uncleanly act and Wilson’s sworn denial of the same, Theser things and the opposing testimony about the amounts given to Wilson by Moen constitute the bill Wilson went before Commissioner Hallett later in the day and had a long conference. It ia learned from outside parties that the object of bis visit was to get out a Warrant against Mr. ‘Moen and have him arrested for perjury. Wil- Son and his counsel will not say anyihing on the subject. “I never saw Wilson before in my life,” said Mr. Hallett toa Merald correspondent, “aud [am waiting to learn a few tacts before make any decision either way. Wilson's appli- cation was not granted and was not denied. It is simply held over for a few days.” No date has been fixed for hearing arguments on the petition for a new trial. Wilson returned to Providence to-night. eee Case of the Moro Castle. AN UNLAWFUL SEIZURE AND EXCESSIVE FINES—PURCHASED AFFIDAVITS. A Port Hawkesbury, C. B., special to the New York Tribune, November 24, says: On Septem- ber 12 the Gloucester schooner Moro Castle was seized here for alleged smuggling at Chester in 1884. She was fined $400, but it subsequently transpired that the offense oceurred in 1882; ‘was therefore outlawed, and that the vessel had not been in Nova Scotia waters sinee and could not have smaggled in INS. Then no less than ten separate offenses were alleged against the vessel—five for violation of customs regulations and five for violation of the treaty of 1818, in fishing inside the limits and obtatning supplies. She was fined $1,600 by the customs de- ter alleg Februar: tment. The ‘owners refused to pay this because after doing so the ves sel would still be liable to confiseation for violating the fishery treaty. The charges were based on Information contained in_att- davits made by certain members of the Moro Castle's crew. These men are now all in the United States. ‘The ensioms department ean and does fine vessels upon the strensth of aml- davits, but the admiralty court would hard); confiscate an American vessel upon such evi- dence. Consul General Phelan ts trying to get the whole case thrown into the admiralty court, and thns give Canadian officials an’ oppor: tunity to prove the many eharzes alleged. He is confident that the alleged violations of cus toms laws can be explained to the satistaction of any reasonable jadze and that the vessel will taus be released.
