THE JIMMY HOPE'S HALF MILLION. The Rich Bank Bargiar on His Way to New York tor Trial. To ANSWER BOR STEALING $2,170,000 From THE MANHATTAN SAVINGS INSTITUTION, AFTER PASSING HIGHT YRARS IN A CALI- FORNIA PRISON, From the New York World, Nov. 16 Jimmy Hope's eight-year sentence expires at the San Quentin prison, California, at noon to- day, and he will be immediately handed over to Detective Silas Rogers, of Inspector Byrne's staff, who will bring him to this city. Hope, who is one of the oldest, most daring and most Successful crooks In the United States, mast stand trial for robbing the Manhattan Savings Institution, at Broadway and Bleeeker street, on October 27, 1878. This audacious crime, by ‘which the institation was robbed of $2,170,000, produced a sensation which did not subside for many months. Four well-known burglars were convieted for the crime. Among them was Johnny Hope, Jimmy's son. He was sen- tenced to twenty years’ imprisonment Jane 29, 1879, and he is now in Sing Sing. Jimmy and his son—and_ there was 06 doubt that the eller Hope was the leading spirit of the gang—had planned the robbery. Jimmy disappeared as completely as if the earth had swallowed him Immediately after the robbery, and nothing was heard of him until June 1881, when he was captured in San Franeiseo for attempting to rob F. Burton & Co.'s bank. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to eight years in San ‘Quentin. Inspector Byrnes eom- inunicated with the California authorities, who ised to let him know when his sentence ex- pired. Detective Rogers telegraphed Fosterday that he had made all arrangements for taking Hope into custody to-day, Although thirty-five of Jimmy Hope's fifty- six years have been spent In erime, compara tively tew of them have been parsed in expia- tion. His deep-rooted love ot ty has led hn to break jail twice. Always a hard to catch, he generally managed to get awa’ after a burglary. His crimes have paid well, and at the time of bis arrest in San Francisco his fortune was estimated at $500,000. April 5, 1869, Hope and George Lestie, alias Howard, ho was afterwards mysteriously murdered near Yonkers, robbed the Beneficent Savings institution of Philadelphia of $1,300,000, The year the paymaster's office of ihe Phila- deipbia navy yard was robbed of a large sum. Hope was strongly si tive proot could be obtained against him. afterwards he was heard from in the interior of this state, where he robbed a little bank. Hope, “Big Frank” MeCor, Joe Howard, allas Kings: jand, and Jim Brady opened the First National bank of Wilmington, Del, soon afterwards. ‘They were all convicted, but in the prison McCoy organized a boid revolt and the entire gang escaped. z ‘On the nightot February 2, 1871, @ short, Jauscular man in police uniform went to the South Kensington bank, Philadelpiia, and told the watchman that he bad been sent to guard the bauk. as the offictals had heard_ that it was to be robbed that night. Halt a dozen Mer: in uniform were soon at the door, whiclt ‘was locked 4s soon us they were admitied. It wus long aiter business hours. The watehman Was knocked senseless by the short man, who was Jimmy Hope, and the “policemen,” who were members of ‘the gang, rifled the’ vault. ‘Hope was convicted and sent to the Eastern nitentiary, whence he excaped in a short ime. Assisted by Abe Coakley, Hope made an unsuccessful attempt upon the Deep River «Conn.) bank in 1878. "Below is a partial list of other robberies attributed to Jimmy, with the amoants stolen: Wellsboro bank, 1874, Ht Milford, N. H., October, 1874, (00,000; Saratoga County” bank, Waterford, X-, October, 1572, $50,000; Third Nationai dank, Baltimore, Auzust, 1572, $140,000. HOPE TAKEN FROM THE KEW YORK OFFICER. A telegram from San Francisco last night says ‘that Hope was taken from the eastern officers by a writ of habeas corpus Tuesday while en route east, and arrived in San Francisco from Sacramento yesterday. The hearing of the writ has been set for Monday next. ee Died to Save Her Father. MR. BESS’ DAUGHTER SPRINGS IX FRONT OF THE GUN THAT WAS LEVELED aT HIM. Four miles east of Bonne Terre, in St. Francis county, Missouri, is Big Mills, a little hamlet, which was the scene Tuesday of a deplorable tragedy, the victim being Miss Minnie Bess. Rob- ert Stockwell is a big landowner and farmer re- siding with his family at Big Mills. Jonathan Bess, also a farmer, is a tenant of Stockwell. ‘The ‘families have been neighbors and good iriends for years, and a son of Stockwell was generally considered to be a lover of Miss Min— nie. He went away to college a year ago, and it seems, though he never wronged the girl in word or deed, that she or her family thought the young man had not done just the right thing. Out of this matter bad iceling grew up, and fast spring there was a bitter quarrel, re- sulting in Stockwell ordering Bess to vacate his land. ‘Bess had a lease, and refused tobe dis- d. The bitter feeling grew until it cul minated in s tragedy. About 7 o'clock Tuesday morning old man Bess and his son, about sixteen years old, went Anto the timber for the purpose of cutting wood. Ayounger son of Stockwell saw them and called his father. Then the two Stockwells staried after the Bess couple, and on overtak- ing them forbade them cutiing any wood on the iand. A quarrel followed and words led to blows. Secing the Stock wells were getting the Dest of it young ran to the house, a hun- dred yards away, and got a double-barreled yun. When he returned he was followed by his sister Minnie. The two fathers were fighting, and young Stockwell met young Bess and undertook to take the gun, A fight ior Possession of the weapon resulted in favor of Yoong Stockwell. On yetting the gun away trom Bess he raised it and fired both barrels at old man Bess. The girl noted his action as he leveled the gun at her father, and sprang be tween her father and the weapon just as the ‘trigger was ‘The contents of both bar t in her breast and stomach, kill- Sng her instantly. This stopped the fight. The dead girl was carried to the house and young ‘Stockwell was taken into custody. Kissed His Children and Died. JOHN NICOLSON'S STRANGE SUICIDE AT A NEW ‘YORK HOTEL.
