In ‘oue rovin there was a line of about twenty per- sons reading in the primer. It was a strange sort of primary class, ‘Some of them had gray bair, some ot them like “Old Unele Ned,” had “no’ wool on the top of his head.” "There were wrinkled faces and wise looking old eyes peering at the book through big spectacles. A diminutive little texcher was Grilling this class in “a-b-abs,” Some of the old pupils had u great deal of difficulty in under- standing how it caine to pass that i-s spelled “is.” When the announcement was made that all over forty years old would be excused, there was considerable cousteruation among the old folks. A fisuerman on Tuesday voarded Phillips’ sloop, which lay at ancnor near the shore, and discovered the body of Phillips, hung by the neck, in the small cavin, in such a position as to preclude any theory of suicide, A subsequent luvestigation, conducted by Justice Spann at the inquest, after the sloop and its ghastly burden were brougut to Galves- ton, leads lo the conciusion that Phillips bad been brutally murdered. There were two hideous wounds oa his head, boui, it Is thought, Iractured the skull, The little cabin and deck were bespatiered with biood, and tue geuerel Jndicatious were that Lhere bad veeu a struggle and tuat tbe bleeding corpse hud been curried below aller Lhe lutal biows bad beeu dealt, In turtuer confirmation of this, a bioody batchet, with which tue woungs bud veen tuflicted, was: found on Lop of the cabin. From the Denver Repubilcan, Au electric storg got loose out in Oregon the other day und almost frightened to death two aituches of the United Sates geological survey who were sketching the topography of the sur- rounding country irom the summit of a high peak near Dixle Butte. The first inumation they got of anything unusual was a buzzing sound seemingly coming from beneath their drawing table, on which Mr, Walsh was work- ing at tue tine, while, a short distance off under te shadow of @ rock, slept his partner, Mr. ‘Tweedy. In detailing "the huppeuing, w local paper goes on to teil that on putting his band Deneuth the drawing sheet Mr. Tweedy recelved “nm electric shock Whicu sent him staggering buck. The projecting rocks at the sume time gave forta a uumming, inusical sound, and all ol tue surrounding air was evidentiy surcharged with electricity, passing into the mountain peuk through all tue crags and projecting potuts, The ful slumbers of Mr. Tweedy were disturbed at thls time and be jumped vo his eet, bUL wus content to He down quickly, as when they were standing up the eleciric uid entered tuem in such quuutlly as to cause & Jeeling like the pricking of needles, ‘Their balr stoud up like bristles, their muscles twisted, nu Hut Luving a cvatiuct toserveas ligutnling: rods tor that peak, tuey gathered up their Justruments uurriedly and Leut a nasty retreat dowa the mountain's side to the middie fork of the Jobn Day. More Particulurs of the Alleged Fili- bustering Scheme Against Mexico. A special from Dallas, Texas, to the New York Herald says: It appears that the filibus- tering expedition proposed to invade Mexico and establish a new republic, to be composed of the present states of Chihuabua, Sonora and Durango, is no myth. Two emissaries of the movement arrived in Dallas Wednesday, and under promise not to give any information that might be used against him, one of them has given to your correspondent some points as to the true inwarduess of the daring scheme. ‘He says that this filibustering movetnent was ‘on foot before the Cutting case was heard of, but that in matters of such delicacy it is neces- sary to move slowiy and with great caution, He did not, however, deny that Cutting is now ‘one of the leaders of ‘tue aftair. The conspiracy has progressed so far that the plan of the new government has been formu- lated. It is to be sociulistic republic, held in check by # strong military power. Great In- dueements are to be offered to the unemployed workinginen ot the United States to emigrate thither, ‘The secret agents say that the pro- posed invasion wit! not necessurily or probably take place from El Paso, but may soon occur at any point on the frontier between Fort Yuma and Brownsville, Cutting, the only man whose personality is publicly Known or suspected In connection with he affair, is receiving a bushel of letters a aay trom all parts of the country. Neurly all these letters tender personal service, and the writers of many of them say they can’ each raise irom ong to, five companies, urmed und equipped. ‘The Yaqui Indians, who have for five yeurs ast held at buy the ‘military power ot Mexico, Rive been approached to become active allies ofthe movement, and their chiefs are eager to take part. Confidential ugents are to be up- pointed in the principal cities of Texas aud throughout the country. Ten thousand men have ‘already been pledged, and tbe leaders of the movement say this number is suificient for the inau_uration of their purpose, tnuugh they could, if hecessary, throw an army of one hun- dred inousand men ucross the Rio Grande.
