THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. The Marquis of Clanricarde. From the Pall Mail Gazette A good deal will be heard of the Marquis of Clanricarde within the next few weeks, and some particulars may be interesting. He is the second son of the late Marquis of Clanri- earde. Lord Dunkellin, the eldest son, haa @ political notoriety of a few weeks In 1866, for it was Le who moved the amendment that proved fatal to the Russell-Giadstone re- form bill aad ministry. Lord Dunkellin was a Pineur Of the freest type, and was but 40, yours Of age when be died. There are many curtous stories told of bis life, which the pen of Zola could best do justice to; but perbaps the story Ot bis deathbed Is sufficiently characterisric. He asked bis doctor how long he had to live, was told a couple of hours, aud thereupon he requested his valet to wiad up the musical box, und it was while listening to the strains of melody that be went to his rest. His brother Up to this time was known as Lord Canning. fs ‘mother was a sister of Lord Canning, and he Wok the title when he inherited the roperty. The old Marquis of Clanricarde was inixed up in ali kivds of scandal. and ue bid to be dismised even by the easy-golng Lord Palmerston trom the postmaster generaiship im consequence. Canning sat for a while ‘as member for the County Galway, and during this period there is a vague traditic his having paid bisestate a visit. It was the on occasion within living memory when be was seen in this country, or on bis 51,000 broad acres, from which ‘he draws, uevertheles, the handsome income of £30,000 sterling r. He is an ex-attache at Torin, be is a bucheior, lives in the Albany, once Made fainous "as the residence Mae caulay—and, if [ mistake not, of Byron—and is ony known to bis tenants by deinands for Tent and eviction notices. There are two smmali towns on his property—Loughrea and Portum- Da. On these be has consistently reiused to spend a peony, with the result tbat they are doth in an advanced state of decay, while paa- periam bas increased in them to an alarming degree, and when the winter weather comer bands of men parade the streets, besiege the doors of the bisuop and the clergy, clamoring for bread and work, and even in ihe west o1 Ireland there are Do towns so desolate oF so hopeless, i Kidnapped in « London Street. From the London Standard. The following statement will appear to your Teaders as almost fucredible, and had it not happened to myself I certainly should regurd it.as sueh. Yesterday I was inspecting the Jeweler’s win- dow, opposite the United Service ciub, when I ‘was accosted by a well-dressed map who con- gratulated himselt upon having, as he «ald, dis covered me after much searching and, without @moment’s warning, and before i could re- cover myself {rom the surprise, he seized my arm and literally lifted me into a cab, upon which were two traveling tranks, and di- rected the coachman to drive to Kibg’s Cross station. He very soon assured me, to my astonish- ment, us may be supposed, that I was bis wif and Low that he hud me home to Neweastie-o: ‘Tyne, I should go where, in answer to remon- strance, be a-sured me that I should find my clothing and everything just as 1 bad lett it when f deserted him! “Argument on my part Was altogether outs of the question, To the as- severation, “But I'am not your wife; I havea busband and family,” be simply replied: “Oh, Yes; I knew you would say all oat, Lam quite Prepared torull this sort of thing. Ihave you now, and home you go.” I really thought the "man mad: but no.
